Determination of electron-hole pair creation energy in Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 Te 0.98 Se 0.02 quaternary semiconductor for room-temperature gamma-ray detection

We report the first-time measurement of the electron-hole pair (ehp) creation energy (W ehp ) in novel Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 Te 0.98 Se 0.02 (CZTS) quaternary semiconductor. CZTS in single crystalline form is poised to be the future of large-volume room-temperature gamma-ray detectors due to its excellent compositional homogeneity with highly reduced defects, high-Z (atomic number) constituents, wide bandgap (1.6 eV), and superior charge transport properties. Despite a great deal of study of the material and device properties since its inception, the W ehp in CZTS has not been measured experimentally. Accurate determination of W ehp is essential for calibration of the spectrometer and other theoretical calculations. In this study we have used an absolute calibration approach, which is based on an iterative approach that yields the Wehp as the best-fit parameter. Using a 241 Am alpha emitting radioisotope and a planar CZTS detector, the Wehp in CZTS was calculated to be 4.47 eV. The obtained value has been validated by accurately predicting the peak energy for gamma rays emitted by a 137 Cs source and read by a CZTS detector with different dimensions. The dependences of the calculated W ehp value on the detector dimensions, type of interaction, and effect of charge trapping are also discussed.

Pulse-shape analysis in Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 Te 0.98 Se 0.02 room-temperature radiation detectors

The effect of trapping of charge carriers on the shape of the charge pulses from room temperature nuclear detectors, based on a recently discovered quaternary semiconductor Cd 0.9 Zn 0.1 Te 0.98 Se 0.02 (CZTS), has been studied. Here, we present a charge-trapping model that explains the pulse shapes for its entire duration from radiation detectors containing multiple defect types. A piecewise continuous model, based on the movement of a large number of charge carriers rather than a single charge, has been proposed to explain the pulse shapes from planar room temperature nuclear detectors. An experimental method based on the model has been described to extract charge-trapping information. This model can be applied to similar semiconductor detectors with electrically active trap centers, in general, to extract information like pre-trapping drift times. Charge pulses from a CZTS planar detector, exposed to 5486 keV alpha particles emitted by a 241Am source, were acquired using a digitizer, and the pulse shapes were explained based on the proposed model. The pre-trapping drift times for electrons as well as holes in CZTS were calculated and studied as a function of operating bias voltage, and a contrast between their bias dependent behaviors was noticed, indicating the behavioral difference of electron and hole traps.

Structure and good piezoelectric performance in the complex system of Pb[(Zn,Ni)Nb]O 3 –Pb[(In,Yb)Nb]O 3 –Pb(Zr,Hf,Ti)O 3

High-performance piezoelectrics are always demanded for the high-end application. In this study, a complex piezoelectric system of 0.49Pb(Zn 1/2 Ni 1/2 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x Pb(In 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 –(0.51 – x )Pb(Zr 1/2 Hf 1/2 ) 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.23) was fabricated through the solid-state method. The structure, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were investigated. The optimum piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 761 pC/N, high Curie temperature of 169 °C, dielectric permittivity ( ε r ) of 4557, and electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k p ) of 63% were found at the morphotropic phase boundary composition of x = 0.19, which are superior to other complex piezoelectric materials. In particular, a significant large-signal d 33 * of 913 pm/V and low strain hysteresis (6%) was obtained in the temperature range of 20–170 °C. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) has demonstrated that good temperature stability is put down to the structure stability. The agreement between the calculated lattice strain from in situ high-energy synchrotron XRD data and the macroscopic measurements suggests that the large lattice strain has a dominant contribution to the high piezoelectric response. The high piezoelectric performance and good temperature stability makes it potential for application.

Pressure-induced suppression of Jahn–Teller distortions and enhanced electronic properties in high-entropy oxide (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Zn 0.2 Cu 0.2 )O

Jahn–Teller distortions are often observed in Cu II -containing complex oxides resulting in remarkable changes of physical properties. Tuning the Jahn–Teller distortions with pressure has attracted considerable interest but is less studied in Cu II -containing high-entropy oxides (HEOs). We found that pressure can suppress the structural distortions originating from the Jahn–Teller effect of CuO 6 octahedra in the rock salt-type (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Zn 0.2 Cu 0.2 )O HEO and significantly modify its electronic properties. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction shows that the structural distortions arising from the Jahn–Teller effect of CuO 6 octahedra are progressively suppressed, and the distorted structure evolves into a nearly ideal form under compression. Alternating current impedance and ultraviolet-visible absorption measurements reveal a dramatic resistance drop by more than three orders of magnitude and an obvious bandgap decrease in ~0.1 eV, respectively, accompanied by the pressure-induced suppression of structural distortions. Our study presents a promising route for tuning the structural distortions and the electronic structures of Cu II -containing HEOs for optimizing materials functionalities.

Design of AlGaN-Zn(Si,Ge)N2 quantum wells for high-efficiency ultraviolet light emitters

The effect of inserting a nm-scale layer of Zn(Si,Ge)N2 into an AlGaN quantum well structure designed for light emission in the wavelength range from 255 to 305 nm is investigated here. The enhanced confinement of the hole within the quantum well results in an enhancement of the overlap of the hole and electron wave functions, resulting in an enhancement of the radiative recombination rate. In this theoretical calculation, for emission at a 270 nm wavelength, the enhancement in the wavefunction overlap can reach a factor of 7 when compared to an AlGaN quantum well device specifically engineered for optimal emission at the identical wavelength. Increases of almost an order of magnitude in both the peak spontaneous emission intensity and the radiative recombination rate are predicted. The peak emission wavelength can be tuned from 255 to 305 nm by adjusting the width and/or the composition of the inserted layer. The proposed structures provide a route to higher efficiency ultraviolet practical light emitting diodes and lasers.

Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Structural Characterization of [EDTA·M(II)]2-·nH2O (M = Ni, Cu, Zn; n = 0-2) Complexes

We investigated microhydrated transition metal-EDTA dianion complexes [EDTA·M(II)]2-·nH2O (M = Ni, Cu, and Zn; n = 1, 2) using cryogenic photoelectron spectroscopy in conjunction with theoretical calculations. The measured spectra of [EDTA·Ni/Zn(II)]2-·nH2O closely resemble those of their corresponding bare dianions, with a systematic shift towards high electron binding energy side upon stepwise hydration and featuring a hexadentate metal-EDTA binding motif. In contrast, the spectra of hydrated [EDTA·Cu(II)]2- exhibit broadened first detachment bands, implying coexistence of multiple metal-ligand binding forms, as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller effect associated with its d9 electron arrangement. These findings showcase molecular-level insights into the structural adaptability of EDTA-based supramolecular assemblies comprising transition metal ions, water molecules, and multidentate ligand environments.

Mg x Zn 1−x O contact to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices

Abstract CuGa 3 Se 5 is a promising candidate material with wide band gap for top cells in tandem photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, traditional CdS contact layers used with other chalcopyrite absorbers are not suitable for CuGa 3 Se 5 due to the higher position of its conduction band (CB) minimum. Mg x Zn 1− x O (MZO) is a transparent oxide with adjustable band gap and CB position as a function of magnesium composition, but its direct application is hindered by CuGa 3 Se 5 surface oxidation. Here, MZO is investigated as a contact (n-type ‘buffer’ or ‘window’) material to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorbers pretreated in Cd 2+ solution, and an onset potential close to 1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride electrolyte is demonstrated. The Cd 2+ surface treatment changes the chemical composition and electronic structure of the CuGa 3 Se 5 surface, as demonstrated by photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The performance of CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber with Cd 2+ treated surface in the solid-state test structure depends on the Zn/Mg ratio in the MZO layer. The measured open circuit voltage of 925 mV is promising for tandem PEC water splitting with CuGa 3 Se 5 /MZO top cells.

6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions: Ba 3⁢ Zn 1−𝑥⁢ Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9

Here, we investigate the magnetic behavior of the 6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice Ba 3 ⁢Zn 1−𝑥 ⁢Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9 using analytical theory, density functional theory, inelastic neutron scattering, and modeling of historical magnetization and neutron-scattering data. A dimer mean-field theory built upon classical Luttinger–Tisza analysis generates a phase diagram revealing a transition from a nonmagnetic singlet to a finite-moment ground state as interdimer couplings increase. A (generalized) linear spin-wave theory captures multiplet mixing, excitation gap closing, and fluctuation-induced moment suppression. Density-functional-theory calculations on selected compounds, together with neutron spectroscopy of dilute Ba 3 ⁢Zn⁢(Ru 1−𝑥 ⁢Sb 𝑥 ) 2 ⁢O 9 , confirm the exchange hierarchy, enabling quantification of previously published experiments within this framework. Our results identify three mechanisms for magnetic moment suppression—quantum fluctuations, ligand hybridization, and nonmagnetic-singlet/magnetic-multiplet mixing.

Magnetic excitations in the double-perovskite iridates La 2 M IrO 6 ( M = Co , Ni , and Zn ) mediated by 3 d – 5 d hybridization

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir L 3 edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double-perovskite iridate single crystals, La 2 MIrO 6 (M=Co,Ni,and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at ~42(6) meV and ~35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3d ions, La 2 CoIrO 6 and La 2 NiIrO 6 , respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La 2 ZnIrO 6 in which the 3d ions are nonmagnetic, suggesting the importance of 3d–5d hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double-perovskite iridates. Furthermore, the magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Zn-doped copper pyrovanadate

We report magnetic properties of the antiferromagnet Zn x Cu 2-x V 2 O 7 (ZnCVO) with x ≈ 0.06 have been thoroughly investigated on powder and single-crystal samples. The crystal structure determination using powder x-ray and neutron diffraction confirms that our ZnCVO samples are isostructural with β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 (β-CVO) with a small deviation in the lattice parameters. Macroscopic magnetic property measurements also confirm the similarity between the two compounds. The Cu 2+ spins were found to align along the crystallographic c axis, antiparallel to their nearest neighbors connected by the leading exchange interaction J 1 . Spin dynamics reveals a typical symmetric spin-wave dispersion with strong interactions in the bc plane and weak interplane coupling. The exchange interaction analysis indicates that the spin network of ZnCVO is topologically consistent with the previous DFT prediction but the values of leading exchange interactions are contradictory. Furthermore, rather than the predicted 2D honeycomb structure, the spin network in ZnCVO could be better described by the anisotropic 2D spin network composed of J 1 , J 5 , and J 6 interactions, four bonds per one spin site, coupled by weak interplane interactions.

High-energy spin excitations in the quantum spin liquid candidate Zn-substituted barlowite probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

A quantum spin liquid is a novel ground state that can support long-range entanglement between magnetic moments, resulting in exotic spin excitations involving fractionalized $S$ = $\frac{1}{2}$ spinons. Here, we measure the excitations in single crystals of the spin liquid candidate Zn-barlowite using resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. By analyzing the incident polarization and temperature dependences, we deduce a clear magnetic scattering contribution forming a broad continuum that surprisingly extends up to ~ $200$ meV (~14$J$, where $J$ is the magnetic exchange). In conclusion, the excitation spectrum reveals that significant contributions arise from multiple pairs of spinons and/or antispinons at high energies.

Beyond single tetrahedron physics of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11

Recently, a new class of quantum magnets, the so-called breathing pyrochlore spin systems, have attracted much attention due to their potential to host exotic emergent phenomena. Here, we present magnetometry, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, muon-spin relaxation, and polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed on high-quality single crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba 3 ⁢Yb 2 ⁢Zn 5 ⁢O 11 . We interpret these results using a simplified toy model and provide insight into the low-energy physics of this system beyond the single tetrahedron physics proposed previously.

Bayesian analysis of the Zn 70 ( d , He 3 ) Cu 69 transfer reaction

Transfer reactions provide information about the single-particle nature of nuclear levels. In particular, the differential cross sections from these measurements are sensitive to the angular momentum of the transferred particle and the spectroscopic factor of the populated level. However, the process of extracting these properties is subject to uncertainties, both from experimental and theoretical sources. By integrating the distorted wave Born approximation into a Bayesian model, we propagate these uncertainties through to the spectroscopic factors and orbital angular momentum values. We use previously reported data of the proton pickup reaction Zn 70 ( d , He 3 ) Cu 69 as an example. By accounting for uncertainties in the experimental data, optical model parameters, and reaction mechanism, we find that the extracted spectroscopic factors for low-lying states of 69 Cu are subject to large, asymmetric uncertainties ranging from 35 to 108%. Additionally, Bayesian model comparison is employed to assign probabilities to each of the allowed angular momentum transfers. This method confirms the assignments for many states, but suggests that the data for a state lying at 3.70 MeV are better characterized by an ℓ =3 transfer, rather than the previously reported ℓ =2 .

Production of the most neutron-deficient Zn isotopes by projectile fragmentation of Kr 78

The cross sections for the production of three most neutron-deficient zinc isotopes, 54–56 Zn, in the projectile fragmentation of 78 Kr at 345 MeV/nucleon on a beryllium target, were measured. Although the results are smaller by over an order of magnitude from those obtained with a 58 Ni beam at 75 MeV/nucleon on a nickel target, the rates of reaction products are found to be larger in the case of high-energy fragmentation of 78 Kr. The experimental cross sections for the most neutron-deficient isotopes of even-Z nuclei between zinc and krypton were analyzed in the framework of the abrasion-ablation model. A very good agreement with the data was found when the nuclear masses predicted by a particular variant of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mass model were used. The prospects for the observation of more exotic isotopes in this region are discussed in context of 2p radioactivity.

Single-particle and collective excitations in Zn 66

Single-particle and collective excitations in 66 Zn have been investigated via the multinucleon transfer reaction, 26 Mg( 48 Ca, α4nγ) using the Gammasphere multidetector array and the Fragment Mass Analyzer. In addition to confirming and complementing the previously known low-spin structure, a new quasi-rotational band comprising several stretched E2 transitions has been established to high spins. However, due to fragmentary nature of its decay, it was not possible to link this sequence to the low-lying states and, thus, determine the absolute excitation energies, spins, and parities unambiguously. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the JUN45 and jj44b effective interactions are able to successfully describe the low-spin structure and herewith confirm that it is dominated by single-particle excitations. Furthermore, the newly established rotational cascade is compared with known superdeformed bands in the A ≈ 60–70 mass region, and with results of calculations performed within the frameworks of the cranked shell model and the adiabatic and configuration-fixed constrained covariant density functional theory and the quantum particle-rotor model.

Freezing of the Lattice in the Kagome Lattice Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Zn-Barlowite ZnCu 3 (OD) 6 FBr

Here, we use 79 Br nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) to demonstrate that ultraslow lattice dynamics set in below the temperature scale set by the Cu-Cu superexchange interaction J (≃160 K) in the kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Zn-barlowite. The lattice completely freezes below 50 K, and 79 Br NQR line shapes become twice broader due to increased lattice distortions. Moreover, the frozen lattice exhibits an oscillatory component in the transverse spin echo decay, a typical signature of pairing of nuclear spins by indirect nuclear spin-spin interaction. This indicates that some Br sites form structural dimers via a pair of kagome Cu sites prior to the gradual emergence of spin singlets below ~30 K. Our findings underscore the significant roles played by subtle structural distortions in determining the nature of the disordered magnetic ground state of the kagome lattice.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of Heavy-fermion Compounds $\text{Yb}_x\text{Ce}_y\text{Sm}_z\text{Ir}_2\text{Zn}_{20}$ $(x+y+z=1)$

Herein, thermoelectric materials hold tremendous promise for advances in fundamental science and practical ap- plications, particularly for robust electricity generation in extreme and remote environments. Despite this, for most materials the energy conversion efficiency is limited by the proportionality between the electrical and thermal conductivities and small values of the Seebeck coefficient for metals. It was previously reported that the heavy-fermion compound $\text{YbIr}_2$ $\text{Zn}_{20}$ exhibits large Seebeck coefficient and thermoelectric figure of merit $ZT$ at 35 K. This behavior is primarily associated with strong hybridization between the $f$- and conduction electron states. Here, we seek to improve the thermoelectric properties through chemical substitution on the Yb site using Ce and Sm. By surveying different levels of substitution, we find that the thermoelectric properties vary strongly with the $f$-element ratio. This confirms that electronic hybridization dominates the thermoelectric properties and clarifies directions for optimizing these materials for applications. We also investigate the impact of the disorder on the thermal conductivity, where we find only weak variation with lanthanide content.

Inducing skyrmion flop transitions in Co 8 Zn 8 Mn 4 at room temperature

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically-protected spin textures that manifest in certain noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets under the right conditions of temperature and field. In thin-film skyrmion hosts, demagnetization effects combined with geometric confinement can result in two distinct types of spin textures: those with their axis of symmetry in the plane of the film (IP) and those with their axis pointing out-of-plane (OOP). Here we present Lorentz transmission electron microscopy evidence in conjunction with numerical modeling showing a flop transition between IP and OOP skyrmions in Co 8 ⁢Zn 8 ⁢Mn 4 at room temperature. Further, we show that this skyrmion flop transition is controllable via the angle of the external field relative to the film normal and we illustrate how this transition depends on thickness. Finally, we propose a skyrmion-writing device that utilizes the details of this transition.
