Flame kinetics at scramjet-engine-relevant conditions: Role of prompt dissociation of weakly-bound radicals

Combustion in high-speed ram-based propulsion engines occurs under distinct thermodynamic conditions of high reactant temperatures (greater than 1000 K) and relatively low pressures (<5 atm). There is a lack of fundamental flame measurements at such conditions that result in adiabatic flame temperatures (T ad ) exceeding 2500 K. In this work, we have measured laminar flame speeds of oxygen-enriched CH 4 /oxidizer mixtures at sub-atmospheric conditions to probe kinetics at high T ad using the isobaric spherically expanding flame approach. Simulations with recent kinetic models revealed increasing differences between data and model predictions with increasing T ad , reaching up to 25 %. Kinetic analyses reveal that at the thermodynamic conditions in these O 2 -enriched flames, i.e., lower pressures and higher T ad , the effects of HCO prompt dissociation are accentuated. In addition to HCO, the prompt dissociations of CH 2 OH and C 2 H 5 are also considered. Here, the prompt dissociations of all three radicals were evaluated and their effects considered in flame speed simulations. Reaction path analysis for the present flames revealed that approximately half of the reaction flux for HCO formation undergoes prompt dissociation to H + CO. Furthermore, these analyses also revealed that the pathways and sensitive reactions are similar between oxygen-enriched fuel/oxidizer mixtures and preheated fuel/air mixtures, if both have similar T ad . Thus, flames of oxygen-enriched mixtures could be a surrogate to probe the flame chemistry of highly preheated mixtures at relatively low pressures that are often encountered in ram-based propulsion engine combustors.

Electromagnetic & Weak Probes: Experimental Overview

Electromagnetic and electroweak probes are the most versatile probes in the study of heavy-ion collisions. Produced at every stage in the evolution of QCD matter, its messengers are practically inert to the strongly interacting medium they travel through. In this contribution, I will discuss a selection of new results from experiments at the LHC, RHIC, and SIS facilities, spanning almost four orders of magnitude in beam energy. Finally, I will conclude with a brief overview of the experimental landscape in the near future.

Measurement of the Drell–Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ 13 TeV

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell-Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient $A_4$ is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ = 0.23152 $\pm$ 0.00031, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Understanding Superionic Conductivity in Lithium and Sodium Salts of Weakly Coordinating Closo -Hexahalocarbaborate Anions

Solid-state ion conductors based on closo-polyborate anions combine high ionic conductivity with a rich array of tunable properties. Cation mobility in these systems is intimately related to the strength of the interaction with the neighboring anionic network and the energy for reorganizing the coordination polyhedra. In this paper, we explore such factors in solid electrolytes with two anions of the weakest coordinating ability, [HCB 11 H 5 Cl 6 ] – and [HCB 11 H 5 Br 6 ] – , and a total of 11 polymorphs are identified for their lithium and sodium salts. Our approach combines ab initio molecular dynamics, synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and AC impedance measurements to investigate their structures, phase-transition behavior, anion orientational mobilities, and ionic conductivities. We find that M(HCB 11 H 5 X 6 ) (M = Li, Na, X = Cl, Br) compounds exhibit order–disorder polymorphic transitions between 203 and 305 °C and display Li and Na superionic conductivity in the disordered state. Through detailed analysis, we illustrate how cation disordering in these compounds originates from a competitive interplay among the lattice symmetry, the anion reorientational mobility, the geometric and electronic asymmetry of the anion, and the polarizability of the halogen atoms. These factors are compared to other closo-polyborate-based ion conductors to suggest guidelines for optimizing the cation–anion interaction for fast ion mobility. This study expands the known solid-state poly(carba)borate-based materials capable of liquid-like ionic conductivities, unravels the mechanisms responsible for fast ion transport, and provides insights into the development of practical superionic solid electrolytes.
