Adhesive for cryogenic temperature applications

Adhesive, which bonds a metal liner to a filament wound composite structure used for cryogenic pressure vessels, prevents the metal liner from buckling under depressurization. The adhesive consists of adducts of urethane and epoxy resins.

Helical tape forming device

Using a device that is not limited to a minimum thickness or width-to-thickness ratio, a very thin metal tape or ribbon is formed into a continuous flat wound helical coil. The device imparts the desired circular shape by squeeze rolling it with an unequal force across its width.

Balloon batteries, charged and heated by solar energy

Shielded heat-of-fusion material envelope collects and stores solar heat to maintain temperature during the night cycle at 30,000 feet. Spiral-wound fluoroplastic film structure has low density to avoid damage to aircraft in case of impact.

Current switch has built-in time delay: A concept

Switch concept provides simple means of achieving electromechanical time delay function. Unit consists of reed-type circuit breaker enclosed by copper tubing with electromagnetic coil wound around tubing and entire assembly mounted on insulating platform. Characteristics are affected only by geometry of system so device is expected to be very stable.

Boron epoxy rocket motor case program

Three 28-inch-diameter solid rocket motor cases were fabricated using 1/8 inch wide boron/epoxy tape. The cases had unequal end closures (4-1/8-inch-diameter forward flanges and 13-inch-diameter aft flanges) and metal attachment skirts. The flanges and skirts were titanium 6Al-4V alloy. The original design for the first case was patterned after the requirements of the Applications Technology Satellite apogee kick motor. The second and third cases were designed and fabricated to approximate the requirements of a small Applications Technology Satellite apogee kick motor. The program demonstrated the feasibility of designing and fabricating large-scale filament-wound solid propellant rocket motor cases with boron/epoxy tape.

A lightweight bimetallic actuator for spacecraft thermal control

The design, development, and construction of two types of active thermal-control systems are described. These designs are based on the controlled angular deflections of spiral-wound bimetallic actuators. The use of these actuators and lightweight louvers results in a frictionless system that is low in weight yet simple in design and low in cost. Both designs exhibit high reliability, good performance repeatability, and do not require power from the spacecraft. Design philosophy and implementation, design tradeoffs, and materials selection are reviewed. The test program is described, and results are presented.

Toroidal transformer design program with application to inverter circuitry

Estimates of temperature, weight, efficiency, regulation, and final dimensions are included in the output of the computer program for the design of transformers for use in the basic parallel inverter. The program, written in FORTRAN 4, selects a tape wound toroidal magnetic core and, taking temperature, materials, core geometry, skin depth, and ohmic losses into account, chooses the appropriate wire sizes and number of turns for the center tapped primary and single secondary coils. Using the program, 2- and 4-kilovolt-ampere transformers are designed for frequencies from 200 to 3200 Hz and the efficiency of a basic transistor inverter is estimated.

The Goddard helical tape recorder

A spacecraft recorder was developed with the objective of functioning continuously for 5 years. The resulting design employed a metallic tape wound in a 200-turn helix. A direct drive, brushless dc torquer and servo speed control drove the recorder at 3 rpm for recording and 54 rpm for playback.

Experimental system, and its evaluation for the control of surgically inducted infections

The effect is reported to design, fabricate, test and evaluate a prototype experimental system for the control of surgically induced infections. The purpose is to provide the cleanest possible environment within a hospital surgery room and eliminate contamination sources that could cause infections during surgery. The system design is described. The system provides for a portable laminar flow clean room, a full bubble helmet system with associated communications and ventilation subsystems for operating room personnel, and surgical gowns that minimize the migration of bacteria. The development test results consisting of portability, laminar flowrate, air flow pattern, electrostatic buildup, noise level, ventilation, human factors, electrical and material compatibility tests are summarized. The conclusions are that the experimental system is effective in reducing the airborne and wound contamination although the helmets and gowns may not be a significant part of this reduction. Definitive conclusions with regard to the infection rate cannot be made at this time.

Fiberglass supports for cryogenic tanks

Analysis, design, fabrication, and test activities were conducted to develop additional technology needed for application of filament-wound fiberglass struts to cryogenic flight tankage. It was conclusively verified that monocoque cylinder or ogive struts are optimum or near-optimum for the range of lengths and loads studied, that a higher strength-to-weight ratio can be achieved for fiberglass struts than for any metallic struts, and that integrally-wrapped metallic end fittings can be used to achieve axial load transfer without reliance on bond strength or mechanical fasteners.

The configuration of the interplanetary magnetic field.

The idealized basic structure of the interplanetary magnetic field is the familiar spiral wound on a cone whose axis is the solar rotation axis. Variations in the radial velocity of the solar wind produce large scale variations in pitch; slight distortions are also produced by the nonradial component of the solar wind velocity. The high velocity streams in the solar wind seem to be more significant than magnetic polarity alternation in the sector structure of the interplanetary medium. Superposed on the ideal spiral are a variety of smaller structures. Outwardly propagating nonsinusoidal Alfven waves with scale lengths of .1 to 10 million kilometers are common. When sharp crested, they are recognized as rotational discontinuities. Other, less easily identified, waves are present part of the time. Tangential discontinuities and other convected structures have been identified, as have interplanetary shock waves.
