Orbital thermal analysis of lattice structured spacecraft using color video display techniques

A color video display technique is demonstrated as a tool for rapid determination of thermal problems during the preliminary design of complex space systems. A thermal analysis is presented for the lattice-structured Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) spacecraft at 32 points in a baseline non Sun-synchronous (60 deg inclination) orbit. Large temperature variations (on the order of 150 K) were observed on the majority of the members. A gradual decrease in temperature was observed as the spacecraft traversed the Earth's shadow, followed by a sudden rise in temperature (100 K) as the spacecraft exited the shadow. Heating rate and temperature histories of selected members and color graphic displays of temperatures on the spacecraft are presented.

A new architecture for adaptive transform compression of NTSC composite video signal

In orthogonal transform coding of NTSC video signal, the data is processed in blocks. Processing a block of data that is maximally correlated leads to larger compression. This paper describes a new architecture for arranging the pixels in a block that yields higher correlation than the adjacent pixel blocks. The data is processed using adaptive, intrafield, discrete cosine transform, variable bit allocation coding. In subjective tests, the picture quality was good for an average of about 2 bits/pel for intrafield processing.

NTSC composite video at 1.6 bits/pel

An adaptive algorithm for intraframe compression of NTSC composite color video signal is described. With an average of 80 percent compression (1.6 bits/pixel) and a bit error rate of 0.0001, excellent broadcast quality pictures were obtained. This is confirmed by a subjective evaluation of processed pictures by five viewers. The algorithm and the results of the subjective evaluation are given in this paper.

Balloon-borne video cassette recorders for digital data storage

A high-speed, high-capacity digital data storage system has been developed for a new balloon-borne gamma-ray telescope. The system incorporates sophisticated, yet easy to use and economical consumer products: the portable video cassette recorder (VCR) and a relatively newer item - the digital audio processor. The in-flight recording system employs eight VCRs and will provide a continuous data storage rate of 1.4 megabits/sec throughout a 40 hour balloon flight. Data storage capacity is 25 gigabytes and power consumption is only 10 watts.

Unbalanced-to-Balanced Video Interface

Equal but opposite video waveforms generated. Unbalanced input line terminated in 75-ohm resistor, R1. Capacitor C1 blocks dc component of input so only time-varying component fed to Q1 and inverted in polarity. Circuit intended for use with input television signal having polarity, amplitude, and dc bias such that tips of synchronizing pulses lie at zero volts while reference white level is specified positive dc level (typically about 1 volt).

Adjustable Work Station for Video Displays and Keyboards

Work station for video displays and keyboards adaptable to operational and anthropometric requirements of individual operators. Visual displays placed beyond keyboard and in line with inclination of keyboard to minimize operator's head movement. In addition, station arranged so operator's eyes and hands focus onto three primary control and display areas. Quickens operating response and decreases chance of error, since input devices and feedback to operator are collocated.

Wind dynamic range video camera

A television camera apparatus is disclosed in which bright objects are attenuated to fit within the dynamic range of the system, while dim objects are not. The apparatus receives linearly polarized light from an object scene, the light being passed by a beam splitter and focused on the output plane of a liquid crystal light valve. The light valve is oriented such that, with no excitation from the cathode ray tube, all light is rotated 90 deg and focused on the input plane of the video sensor. The light is then converted to an electrical signal, which is amplified and used to excite the CRT. The resulting image is collected and focused by a lens onto the light valve which rotates the polarization vector of the light to an extent proportional to the light intensity from the CRT. The overall effect is to selectively attenuate the image pattern focused on the sensor.

Measurement of orbital dynamics of the OAST-1 Solar Array using recorded video images

The OAST-1 Solar Array Experiment was flown on Shuttle mission STS-41D on August 31, 1984 for NASA's Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology. It is pointed out that this was the first flight demonstration of the operation of a large solar array which was designed for multiple deployments and retractions. The array represents also a new class of very lightweight, flexible, low-frequency structures. A program was, therefore, implemented with the aim to study the structural dynamics of the array on the basis of a photogrammetric analysis of data obtained with the existing Shuttle closed circuit television (CCTV) system. The present paper has the objective to describe the experiment and its implementation, taking into account the unique process of analyzing the video data.
