Resolution requirements for numerical modeling of neutrino quantum kinetics

Neutrino quantum kinetics is a rapidly evolving field in computational astrophysics, with a primary focus on collective neutrino oscillations in core-collapse supernovae and postmerger phases of binary neutron star mergers. In recent years, there has been considerable debate concerning resolution dependence in numerical simulations. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive resolution study in both angular- and spatial directions by using two independent schemes of quantum kinetic neutrino transport: finite volume and pseudospectral methods. We complement our discussion by linear stability analysis including inhomogeneous modes. Our result suggests that decreasing spatial resolutions underestimates the growth of flavor instability, and then leads to wrong asymptotic states of flavor conversions, which potentially has a critical impact on astrophysical consequences. We further delve into numerical results of low resolution simulations, that reveals the underlying mechanism responsible for numerical artifacts caused by insufficient resolutions. Finally, this study settles the debate on requirements of resolutions and serves as a guideline for numerical modeling of quantum kinetic neutrino transport.

Field-driven cluster formation in two-dimensional colloidal binary mixtures

Here, we study size- and charge-asymmetric oppositely charged colloids driven by an external electric field. The large particles are connected by harmonic springs, forming a hexagonal-lattice network, while the small particles are free of bonds and exhibit fluidlike motion. We show that this model exhibits a cluster formation pattern when the external driving force exceeds a critical value. The clustering is accompanied with stable wave packets in vibrational motions of the large particles.

Intrinsic bulk viscosity of the one-component plasma

The intrinsic bulk viscosity of the one-component plasma (OCP) is computed and analyzed using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and the Green-Kubo formalism. It is found that bulk viscosity exhibits a maximum at Γ ≈ 1, corresponding to the condition that the average kinetic energy of particles equals the potential energy at the average interparticle spacing. The weakly coupled and strongly coupled limits are analyzed and used to construct a model that captures the full range of coupling strengths simulated: Γ ≈ 10 –2 –10 2 . Simulations are also run of the Yukawa one-component plasma (YOCP) in order to understand the impact of electron screening. It is found that electron screening leads to a smaller bulk viscosity due to a reduction in the excess heat capacity of the system. Bulk viscosity is shown to be at least an order of magnitude smaller than shear viscosity in both the OCP and YOCP. The generalized frequency-dependent bulk viscosity coefficient is also analyzed. This is found to exhibit a peak near twice the plasma frequency in strongly coupled conditions, which is associated with the oscillatory decay observed in the bulk viscosity autocorrelation function. As a result, the generalized shear and bulk viscosity coefficients are found to have a similar magnitude for ω ≳ 2⁢ω p at strongly coupled conditions.

Particlelike Phonon Propagation Dominates Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity in Crystalline Tl 3 VSe 4

We explore the microscopic mechanisms of ultralow lattice thermal conductivity ($\kappa_{l}$) in Tl$_{3}$VSe$_{4}$~by combining a first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) based framework of anharmonic lattice dynamics with the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation (PBTE) for phonons. We include contributions of the three- and four-phonon scattering processes to the phonon lifetimes as well as the temperature-dependent anharmonic renormalization of phonon energies arising from an unusually strong quartic anharmonicity in Tl$_{3}$VSe$_{4}$. In contrast to a recent report by Mukhopadhyay~\etal [\textcolor{blue}{Science 360, 1455 (2018)}] which suggested that a significant contribution to $\kappa_{l}$ arises from random walks among uncorrelated oscillators, we show that particle-like propagation of phonon excitations can successfully explain the experimentally observed ultralow $\kappa_{l}$. Our results are also supported by explicit calculations of the off-diagonal terms of the heat-current operator, which are found to be small and indicate that wave-like tunneling of heat-carrying vibrations is of minor importance. Our results (i) resolve the discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental $\kappa_{l}$, (ii) offer new insights into the minimum $\kappa_{l}$ achievable in \TlVSe, and (iii) highlight the importance of high-order anharmonicity in low-$\kappa_{l}$ systems. The methodology demonstrated here may be used to resolve the discrepancies between the experimentally measured and the theoretically calculated $\kappa_{l}$ in skutterides and perovskites, as well as to understand the glasslike $\kappa_{l}$ in complex crystals with strong anharmonicity, leading towards the goal of rational design of new materials.

Fast and Universal Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory Algorithm for Warm Dense Matter to Hot Dense Plasma

Understanding many processes, e.g., fusion experiments, planetary interiors, and dwarf stars, depends strongly on microscopic physics modeling of warm dense matter and hot dense plasma. This complex state of matter consists of a transient mixture of degenerate and nearly free electrons, molecules, and ions. This regime challenges both experiment and analytical modeling, necessitating predictive ab initio atomistic computation, typically based on quantum mechanical Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). However, cubic computational scaling with temperature and system size prohibits the use of DFT through much of the warm dense matter regime. A recently developed stochastic approach to KS-DFT can be used at high temperatures, with the exact same accuracy as the deterministic approach, but the stochastic error can converge slowly and it remains expensive for intermediate temperatures (< 50 eV). Here we have developed a universal mixed stochastic-deterministic algorithm for DFT at any temperature. This approach leverages the physics of KS-DFT to seamlessly integrate the best aspects of these different approaches. We demonstrate that this method significantly accelerated self-consistent field calculations for temperatures from 3 to 50 eV, while producing stable molecular dynamics and accurate diffusion coefficients.

Superdiffusion from Emergent Classical Solitons in Quantum Spin Chains

Finite-temperature spin transport in the quantum Heisenberg spin chain is known to be superdiffusive, and has been conjectured to lie in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. Using a kinetic theory of transport, we compute the KPZ coupling strength for the Heisenberg chain as a function of temperature, directly from microscopics; the results agree well with density-matrix renormalization group simulations. Here, we establish a rigorous quantum-classical correspondence between the “giant quasiparticles” that govern superdiffusion and solitons in the classical continuous Landau-Lifshitz ferromagnet. We conclude that KPZ universality has the same origin in classical and quantum integrable isotropic magnets: a finite-temperature gas of low-energy classical solitons.

Microscopic Mechanisms of Glasslike Lattice Thermal Transport in Cubic Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 Tetrahedrites

Materials based on cubic tetrahedrites (Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 ) are useful thermoelectrics with unusual thermal and electrical transport properties, such as very low and nearly temperature-independent lattice thermal conductivity (κ L ). We explain the microscopic origin of the glasslike κ L in Cu 12 Sb 4 S 13 by explicitly treating anharmonicity up to quartic terms for both phonon energies and phonon scattering rates. We show that the strongly unstable phonon modes associated with trigonally coordinated Cu atoms are anharmonically stabilized above approximately 100 K and continue hardening with increasing temperature in accord with experimental data. This temperature-induced hardening effect reduces scattering of heat carrying acoustic modes by reducing the available phase space for three-phonon processes, thereby balancing the conventional ∝ T increase in scattering due to phonon population and yielding nearly temperature independent κ L . Furthermore, we find that very strong phonon broadening leads to a qualitative breakdown of the conventional phonon-gas model and modify the dominant heat transport mechanism from the particlelike phonon wave packet propagation to incoherent contributions described by the off-diagonal terms in the heat-flux operator, which are typically prevailing in glasses and disordered crystals. Furthermore, our work paves the way to a deeper understanding of glasslike thermal conductivity in complex crystals with strong anharmonicity.

Spectral Denoising for Accelerated Analysis of Correlated Ionic Transport

Computation of correlated ionic transport properties from molecular dynamics in the Green-Kubo formalism is expensive, as one cannot rely on the affordable mean square displacement approach. We use spectral decomposition of the short-time ionic displacement covariance to learn a set of diffusion eigenmodes that encode the correlation structure and form a basis for analyzing the ionic trajectories. This allows systematic reduction of the uncertainty and accelerate computations of ionic conductivity in systems with a steady-state correlation structure. We provide mathematical and numerical proofs of the method’s robustness and demonstrate it on realistic electrolyte materials.

Odd Diffusivity of Chiral Random Motion

Diffusive transport is characterized by a diffusivity tensor which may, in general, contain both a symmetric and an antisymmetric component. Although the latter is often neglected, we derive Green-Kubo relations showing it to be a general characteristic of random motion breaking time-reversal and parity symmetries, as encountered in chiral active matter. In analogy with the odd viscosity appearing in chiral active fluids, we term this component the odd diffusivity. Furthermore, we show how odd diffusivity emerges in a chiral random walk model, and demonstrate the applicability of the Green-Kubo relations through molecular dynamics simulations of a passive tracer particle diffusing in a chiral active bath.

Unconventional Hysteretic Transition in a Charge Density Wave

Hysteresis underlies a large number of phase transitions in solids, giving rise to exotic metastable states that are otherwise inaccessible. Here, we report an unconventional hysteretic transition in a quasi-2D material, EuTe 4 . By combining transport, photoemission, diffraction, and x-ray absorption measurements, we observe that the hysteresis loop has a temperature width of more than 400 K, setting a record among crystalline solids. The transition has an origin distinct from known mechanisms, lying entirely within the incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) phase of EuTe 4 with no change in the CDW modulation periodicity. We interpret the hysteresis as an unusual switching of the relative CDW phases in different layers, a phenomenon unique to quasi-2D compounds that is not present in either purely 2D or strongly coupled 3D systems. Furthermore, our findings challenge the established theories on metastable states in density wave systems, pushing the boundary of understanding hysteretic transitions in a broken-symmetry state.

Zero Magnetic Field Plateau Phase Transition in Higher Chern Number Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulators

The plateau-to-plateau transition in quantum Hall effect under high magnetic fields is a celebrated quantum phase transition between two topological states. It can be achieved by either sweeping the magnetic field or tuning the carrier density. The recent realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators with tunable Chern numbers introduces the channel degree of freedom to the dissipation-free chiral edge transport and makes the study of the quantum phase transition between two topological states under zero magnetic field possible. Here, we synthesized the magnetic topological insulator (TI)/TI pentalayer heterostructures with different Cr doping concentrations in the middle magnetic TI layers using molecular beam epitaxy. By performing transport measurements, we found a potential plateau phase transition between C=1 and C=2 QAH states under zero magnetic field. In tuning the transition, the Hall resistance monotonically decreases from h/e2 to h/2e 2 , concurrently, the longitudinal resistance exhibits a maximum at the critical point. Our results show that the ratio between the Hall resistance and the longitudinal resistance is greater than 1 at the critical point, which indicates that the original chiral edge channel from the C=1 QAH state coexists with the dissipative bulk conduction channels. Subsequently, these bulk conduction channels appear to self-organize and form the second chiral edge channel in completing the plateau phase transition. Our study will motivate further investigations of this novel Chern number change-induced quantum phase transition and advance the development of the QAH chiral edge current-based electronic and spintronic devices.

Fredkin Staircase: An Integrable System with a Finite-Frequency Drude Peak

We introduce and explore an interacting integrable cellular automaton, the Fredkin staircase, that lies outside the existing classification of such automata, and has a structure that seems to lie beyond that of any existing Bethe-solvable model. The Fredkin staircase has two families of ballistically propagating quasiparticles, each with infinitely many species. Despite the presence of ballistic quasiparticles, charge transport is diffusive in the d.c. limit, albeit with a highly non- gaussian dynamic structure factor. Remarkably, this model exhibits persistent temporal oscillations of the current, leading to a delta-function singularity (Drude peak) in the a.c. conductivity at nonzero frequency. Here, we analytically construct an extensive set of operators that anticommute with the time-evolution operator; the existence of these operators both demonstrates the integrability of the model and allows us to lower-bound the weight of this finite-frequency singularity.

Quantum Geometric Oscillations in Two-Dimensional Flat-Band Solids

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures can be engineered into artificial superlattices that host flat bands with significant Berry curvature and provide a favorable environment for the emergence of novel electron dynamics. In particular, the Berry curvature can induce an oscillating trajectory of an electron wave packet transverse to an applied static electric field. Though analogous to Bloch oscillations, this novel oscillatory behavior is driven entirely by quantum geometry in momentum space instead of band dispersion. While the current from Bloch oscillations can be localized by increasing field strength, the current from the geometric orbits saturates to a nonzero plateau in the strong-field limit. Finally, in nonmagnetic materials, the geometric oscillations are even under inversion of the applied field, whereas the Bloch oscillations are odd, a property that can be used to distinguish these two coexisting effects.

Full Counting Statistics of Charge in Chaotic Many-Body Quantum Systems

We investigate the full counting statistics of charge transport in U(1)-symmetric random unitary circuits. We consider an initial mixed state prepared with a chemical potential imbalance between the left and right halves of the system and study the fluctuations of the charge transferred across the central bond in typical circuits. Using an effective replica statistical mechanics model and a mapping onto an emergent classical stochastic process valid at large on-site Hilbert space dimension, we show that charge transfer fluctuations approach those of the symmetric exclusion process at long times, with subleading t –1/2 quantum corrections. Here, we discuss our results in the context of fluctuating hydrodynamics and macroscopic fluctuation theory of classical nonequilibrium systems and check our predictions against direct matrix-product state calculations.
