Data and scripts associated with “Allometric scaling of hyporheic respiration across basins in the Pacific Northwest USA"

This data package is associated with the publication “Allometric scaling of hyporheic respiration across basins in the Pacific Northwest USA” submitted to JGR-Biogeosciences (Regier et al. 2025).This study used reach-scale modeled estimates of hyporheic aerobic respiration made by the River Corridor Model (Fang et al. 2020) and watershed characteristics across the Willamette and Yakima River basins to explore potential allometric scaling (i.e., power-law relationships between size and function) of cumulative hyporheic respiration across catchment-to-basin scales. Scaling was explored quantitatively via the R2, slope, and y-intercept of relationships between cumulative hyporheic respiration and watershed area, divided into hyporheic exchange flux (HEF) quantiles. We also explored relationships between allometric scaling and other watershed characteristics through linear regression, spatial patterns, and mutual information analyses. Our results also suggest variability of hyporheic respiration allometry for middle exchange flux quantiles, and in relation to land-cover. Our findings provide initial evidence that allometric scaling may be useful for predicting hyporheic biogeochemical dynamics across watersheds from reach to basin scales. This data package is associated with the GitHub repository found at https://github.com/peterregier/rc_wrb_yrb_scaling. The data package is organized into several key directories. The “data” folder contains multiple CSV files, including landscape heterogeneity, scaling analysis, and watershed boundary data. The “figures” folder has all figure files in both PDF and PNG formats. Core analysis scripts and figure generation scripts are in the “scripts” directory, systematically numbered for sequential execution. The root directory includes essential project files; please see the file ending in “flmd.csv” for a list and description of all files contained in this data package and the file ending in “dd.csv” for data dictionaries used to describe tabular column headers.

Ta compressibility to 20+ Mbar

Developing techniques for experimentally constraining equation of state (EOS) models for important programmatic materials under extreme conditions is vital for advancing our modeling and predictive capabilities. Tantalum is a frequently used standard material for both calibration and testing, and this report describes our work to both measure Ta compressibility to very high pressures and densities using the Ramp Compression Equation of State platform on the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Using a series of seven shots, increasing in peak pressure with each shot, we have made absolute measurements of the compressibility of Ta along the ramp compression path up to 2.3 TPa. Previous experimental measurements constrained the cold compressibility up to ~400 GPa, and there is a spread in the EOS models above that pressure. To improve communication and collaboration between the experimental team and the EOS development group, these new data, along with other experimental and theoretical constraints, were used to develop a Ta equation of state table, M73000. This report first describes the experimental measurements made at the NIF, and then discusses the construction of the EOS model. The ramp compression data can be found in tabular form in Appendix A. Appendix B contains some additional experimental details. In Appendix C we include some additional details on the EOS modeling. At the end of this document, we have attached a detailed report on the NIF ramp compression platform itself and in the main text referenced specific sections for additional details.

Nutritional studies

Detailed metabolic studies were conducted of the Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 flight crews, and the results are presented in tabular form. Intake and absorption data are also included. Apollo nutrient intakes were found to be characteristically hypocaloric. Estimates of body composition changes from metabolic balance data, from preflight and postflight weights and volumes, and from total body water and potassium provide no evidence for diminished caloric requirements during a flight. As observed during the Gemini Program and during periods of bed rest, measurements of bone density and metabolic balance confirm a tendency toward loss of skeletal tissue in weightlessness. No evidence exists that any inflight metabolic anomaly, including hypokalemia, was induced by marginal or deficient nutrient intakes. In general, the Apollo crewmen were well nourished and exhibited normal gastroenterological functions, although appetite was somewhat diminished and the organoleptic response to food was somewhat modified during flight.

The geostationary radiation environment

A study of the geostationary radiation environment is presented. The distribution of charged particles is reviewed in terms of population domains, where trapped constituents (energetic electrons and protons) and transients (solar flare protons) have been considered. Synchronous geomagnetic geometry is discussed, and temporal and spatial variations of trapped particles are briefly reviewed. A short description of the current standard environment models is given. Probabilistic solar flare proton predictions are described, including the distinction between ordinary event and anomalously large event fluences and the probability of occurrence of anomalously large events. A special solar proton evaluation approach is suggested for extended manned missions in the synchronous altitude regime. Finally, calculational results are presented for orbital flux integrations and dose and shielding evaluations. The data, given in graphic and tabular form, are explained and discussed.

Total-dose radiation effects data for semiconductor devices. 1985 supplement. Volume 2, part A

Steady-state, total-dose radiation test data, are provided in graphic format for use by electronic designers and other personnel using semiconductor devices in a radiation environment. The data were generated by JPL for various NASA space programs. This volume provides data on integrated circuits. The data are presented in graphic, tabular, and/or narrative format, depending on the complexity of the integrated circuit. Most tests were done using the JPL or Boeing electron accelerator (Dynamitron) which provides a steady-state 2.5 MeV electron beam. However, some radiation exposures were made with a Cobalt-60 gamma ray source, the results of which should be regarded as only an approximate measure of the radiation damage that would be incurred by an equivalent electron dose.

PSA: A program to streamline orbit determination for launch support operations

An interactive, menu driven computer program was written to streamline the orbit determination process during the critical launch support phase of a mission. Residing on a virtual memory minicomputer, this program retains the quantities in-core needed to obtain a least squares estimate of the spacecraft trajectory with interactive displays to assist in rapid radio metric data evaluation. Menu-driven displays allow real time filter and data strategy development. Graphical and tabular displays can be sent to a laser printer for analysis without exiting the program. Products generated by this program feed back to the main orbit determination program in order to further refine the estimate of the trajectory. The final estimate provides a spacecraft ephemeris which is transmitted to the mission control center and used for antenna pointing and frequency predict generation by the Deep Space Network. The development and implementation process of this program differs from that used for most other navigation software by allowing the users to check important operating features during development and have changes made as needed.

Properties of pure nickel after long term exposures to LiOH and vacuum at 775 K

The solid to liquid phase transformation of LiOH at 744.3 K is considered to be an ideal candidate thermal energy storage (TES) mechanism for a Rankine heat engine based solar dynamic system operating at approximately 682 K. While pure nickel is thought to be a suitable containment material for LiOH, long term containment is of concern because molten hydroxides are usually corrosive. Two commercially pure nickel alloys, Ni-200 and Ni-201, were exposed to molten LiOH, its vapor, and vacuum at 775 K for periods ranging from 50 to 5000 h, and simple mechanical property measurements (77 to 900 K tensile and 750 K creep rupture) of exposed alloys were undertaken. The mechanical property test procedures are described and tabular lists of the test data are presented.

BOREAS TGB-12 Rn-222 Activity Data over the NSA

The BOREAS TGB-12 team made measurements of soil carbon inventories, carbon concentration in soil gases, and rates of soil respiration at several sites to estimate the rates of carbon accumulation and turnover in each of the major vegetation types. Sampling strategies for soils were designed to take advantage of local fire chronosequences, so that the accumulation of carbon in regrowing mosses could be determined. All the data are used to: (1) calculate the inventory of carbon and nitrogen in moss and mineral soil layers at NSA sites, (2) determine the rates of input and turnover (using both accumulation since the last stand-killing fire and radiocarbon data), and (3) link changes in soil respiration rate to shifts in the C-14 content of soil CO2 to determine the average "age" respired CO2 . These Rn-222 activity data were collected from 15-Nov-1993 to 16-Aug-1994 over the NSA sites. They are useful for determining the rate of gas exchange between soil and the overlying atmosphere. The data in this data set are stored in tabular ASCII files.

Effect of Reynolds Number on the Lateral-Stability Derivatives at Low Speed of Sweptback-and Delta-Wing-Fuselage Combinations Oscillating in Yaw

An investigation has been made to determine the effect of Reynolds number on the lateral-stability derivatives at low speed of sweptback- and delta-wing-fuselage combinations. Results were obtained from the models oscillating in yaw over an angle-of-attack range from 0 degrees to 32 degrees for the delta-wing models and from 0 degrees to 28 degrees for the sweptback-wing model. The Reynolds number range was from 0.7 x 10(exp 6) for the sweptback-wing model and from 0.9 x 10(exp 6) to 9 x 10(exp 6) for the delta-wing models. The tests were run for amplitudes of oscillation from 2 degrees to 10 degrees and reduced-frequency parameters from 0.028 to 0.113. The results of this investigation are presented without discussion, but data figures are indexed in tabular form to facilitate their use.
