Multiple shape coexistence near {sup 118}Sn: First 0+ 3 lifetime measurement

The intruder bands in Sn isotopes, built on the 2p-2h excitation across the Z = 50 proton shell gap, are well-known examples of shape coexistence near the neutron mid-shell region. Spectroscopic signatures for shape coexistence include enhanced E0 transitions between the 0+ band heads. However, the underlying shape coexistence and mixing has been unclear because lifetime information for the excited 0+ states was incomplete in 118Sn. We thus present here the first measurement of the 0+ 3 lifetime in 118Sn using the fast-timing technique following thermal-neutron capture. The observed enhancement in ρ2(E0;0+ 3 → 0+ 2 ) of 150(30) milliunits provides compelling indications for multiple shape coexistence in 118Sn. Additionally, three distinct shapes in 116,118,120Sn naturally emerged in theoretical calculations based on the quantum-number-projected generator coordinate method employing a relativistic energy density functional.

Anomalous Hall Effect in Kagome Ferrimagnet GdMn 6 Sn 6

We present magnetotransport data on the ferrimagnet GdMn 6 Sn 6 . From the temperature-dependent data we are able to extract a large intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect σ int xz ~ 32 Ω –1 cm –1 and σ int xz ~ 223 Ω –1 cm –1 , which is comparable to values found in other systems also containing kagome nets of transition metals. From our transport anisotropy, as well as our density functional theory calculations, we argue that the system is electronically best described as a three-dimensional system. Furthermore we show that reduced dimensionality is not a strong requirement for obtaining large Berry phase contributions to transport properties. In addition, the coexistence of rare-earth and transition-metal magnetism makes the hexagonal MgFe 6 Ge 6 structure type a promising system to tune the electronic and magnetic properties in future studies.

Field-induced topological Hall effect and double-fan spin structure with a $c$-axis component in the metallic kagome antiferromagnetic compound YMn 6 Sn 6

Geometric frustration in the kagome lattice makes it a great host for the flat electronic band, nontrivial topological properties, and novel magnetism. In this work, we use magnetotransport measurements to map out the field-temperature phase diagram of the centrosymmetric YMn 6 Sn 6 with a Mn kagome lattice and show that the system exhibits the topological Hall effect (THE) with an in-plane applied magnetic field around 240 K. In addition, our neutron diffraction results demonstrate that the observed THE cannot arise from a magnetic skyrmion lattice, but instead from an in-plane field-induced double-fan spin structure with c-axis components. This paper provides a platform to understand the influence of a field-induced novel magnetic structure on magnetoelectric response in topological kagome metals.

Chiral properties of the zero-field spiral state and field-induced magnetic phases of the itinerant kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Applying a magnetic field in the hexagonal plane of YMn 6 Sn 6 leads to a complex magnetic phase diagram of commensurate and incommensurate phases, one of which coexists with the topological Hall effect (THE) generated by a unique fluctuation-driven mechanism. Using unpolarized neutron diffraction, we report on the solved magnetic structure for two previously identified, but unknown, commensurate phases. These include a low-temperature, high-field fanlike phase and a room-temperature, low-field canted antiferromagnetic phase. Here, an intermediate incommensurate phase between the fanlike and forced ferromagnetic phases is also identified as the last known phase of the in-plane field-temperature diagram. Additional characterization using synchrotron powder diffraction reveals extremely high-quality, single-phase crystals, which suggests that the presence of two incommensurate magnetic structures throughout much of the phase diagram is an intrinsic property of the system. Interestingly, polarized neutron diffraction shows that the centrosymmetric system hosts preferential chirality in the zero-field double-flat-spiral phase, which, along with the THE, is a topologically nontrivial characteristic.

Dynamical origins of weakly coupled relaxor behavior in Sn-doped (Ba,Ca)TiO 3 -BiScO 3

The peculiar characteristics of relaxors, viz., a frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity peak and good functional properties (dielectric, electromechanical, electrocaloric, etc.), are attributed to nanoscale regions with correlated dipoles, or polar nanoregions (PNRs). However, the exact nature of PNRs and their contribution to relaxor behavior remains debatable. In recent years, solid solutions of BaTiO3-BiMeO3 (where Me is a metal), have emerged as an interesting system with characteristics in between that of relaxors and dipole glasses. Here, we have examined the atomistic origins of weakly coupled relaxor behavior, specifically with regard to formation of PNRs, in Sn-doped (1-x)(Ba,Ca)TiO 3-x BiScO 3 using macroscopic polarization and neutron dynamic pair distribution function measurements. We show that the short-range atomic correlations observed within the PNRs dynamically fluctuate with frequencies of the order of THz. Furthermore the composition-dependent dielectric and polarization behaviors are critically influenced by the relative stability of the atomic correlations near ~1 THz, while the instantaneous atomic correlations are largely independent of x. The current results are discussed based on a model of intrinsic local modes distributed in a dielectrically soft matrix.

Topological Electronic Structure Evolution with Symmetry Breaking Spin Reorientation in (Fe 1–x Co x )Sn

Topological materials hosting kagome lattices have drawn considerable attention due to the interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlations. The (Fe 1–x Co x )Sn system not only hosts a kagome lattice but has a tunable symmetry-breaking magnetic moment with temperature and doping. In this study, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the interplay between the topological electronic structure and varying magnetic moment from the planar to axial antiferromagnetic phases. Here, evidence for a theoretically predicted gap at the Dirac point is revealed in the low-temperature axial phase, but no gap opening is observed across a temperature-dependent magnetic phase transition. However, topological surface bands are observed to shift in energy as the surface magnetic moment is reduced or becomes disordered over time during experimental measurements. The shifting surface bands may preclude the determination of a temperature-dependent bulk gap, but this highlights the intricate connections between magnetism and topology with a surface/bulk dichotomy that can affect material properties and their interrogation.

Electronic transport and thermoelectricity in the selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32

Here, we report a study of selenospinel Cu 6—x Fe 4+x Sn 12 Se 32 (x = 0, 1, 2) single crystals, which crystallize in a cubic structure with the F$d$$\overline{3}$$m$ space group, and show typical semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for electrical conductivity E ρ (32.3–69.8 meV), and for thermopower E S (3.2–11.5 meV), indicates a polaronic transport mechanism between 350 and 50 K. With decreasing temperature, it evolves into variable-range hopping conduction. Furthermore, the heat capacity shows a hump around 25(5) K and diverges from the Debye T 3 law at low temperatures, indicating the observation of structural glassy features in these crystalline solids.

Topological Nernst and topological thermal Hall effect in rare-earth kagome ScMn 6 Sn 6

Thermal and thermoelectric measurements are known as powerful tools to uncover the physical properties of quantum materials due to their sensitivity towards the scattering and chirality of heat carriers. We use these techniques to confirm the presence of momentum and real-space topology in ScMn 6 Sn 6 . There is an unconventional dramatic increase in the Seebeck coefficient on entering the transverse conical spiral (TCS) state below $T$ = 200 K, suggesting an unusual scattering of heat carriers. In addition, the observed anomalous thermal Hall effect and the anomalous Nernst effect indicate nonzero Berry curvature in k space. Furthermore, we identify a significant topological contribution to the thermal Hall and Nernst signals in the TCS phase revealing the impacts of real-space Berry curvature. We discuss the presence of the topological thermal Hall effect and topological Nernst effect in the diverse HfFe 6 Ge 6 family. In conclusion, this study illustrates the importance of transverse thermal and thermoelectric measurements to investigate the origin of topological transport in the noncoplanar magnetic phases in this family of kagome metals.

Probing the van Hove singularity of the kagome metal YV 6 Sn 6 through quantum oscillations

Kagome metals with the Fermi energy tuned near the van Hove singularities (vHss) have shown to host exotic phases including unconventional superconductivity and a chiral flux phase arising from a charge density wave. However, most quantum oscillations studies of the electronic structure of kagome metals focus on compounds which electronically or magnetically order, obscuring the unperturbed vHs. Here we present quantum oscillation measurements of YV 6 ⁢Sn 6 which contains a pristine kagome lattice free from long-range order. We discovered quantum oscillations corresponding to a large orbit (≈70% of the Brillouin Zone area) with the heaviest mass ever observed in vanadium-based kagome metals (≈3.3⁢m e ), consistent with a Fermi pocket whose Fermi level is near the vHs. Comparing with first-principle calculations suggests that the effective mass of this pocket is highly sensitive to the position of Fermi level. Finally, our study establishes the enhanced density of states associated with a vHs in a kagome metal, allowing further insight into a potential driving mechanism for the unconventional electronic orderings in this class of materials.

Anomalies in the electromagnetic response and peculiarities of the domain structure in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3⁢ Sn 2 ⁢S 2

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of magnetic properties of Co 3 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢S 2 (CoSnS) crystals using macroscopic characterization and observations of the domain structure (DS) in a wide range of easy- and hard-axis fields (𝐻) and temperatures (𝑇). From macroscopic measurements, we derive temperature dependences of the basic magnetic parameters of the material [saturation magnetization 𝑀 𝑠 ⁡(𝑇), uniaxial anisotropy constant 𝐾⁡(𝑇), and exchange stiffness 𝐴⁡(𝑇)] and, based on them, calculate the thermodynamic magnetization 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) curves and DS parameters for pinning-free samples. We find important qualitative and quantitative differences between the theory and experiment defined by the efficient pinning of domain walls (DWs) in our samples. It turns out that, already at temperatures close to the ferromagnetic transition 𝑇 𝑐 , the DW dynamics falls into the heavy creep regime, resulting in a strong deferral of the DS adjustment into the equilibrium state. Here, we suggest that specific magnetic defects, responsible for pinning and causing field-tuned reproducible domain nucleation patterns observed in our high-quality samples, are pointlike. Recently found magnetic polarons formed around vacancies and impurities, which carry strong diamagnetic moments of spin-orbit nature and are intrinsic for CoSnS and expected in other Weyl semimetals, are a possible source of pinning yielding peculiar 𝑀⁡(𝐻,𝑇) response of CoSnS.

Anomalous Hall effect in the polar magnet Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 : A candidate for hosting skyrmions

While recent theoretical studies have positioned noncollinear polar magnets with C nv symmetry as compelling candidates for realizing topological magnetic phases and substantial intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, experimental realizations of the same in strongly correlated systems remain rare. Here, we present a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and extended topological magnetic ordering in Gd 3 ⁢Ni 8 ⁢Sn 4 with hexagonal C 6v symmetry. Observation of topological Hall response, corroborated by metamagnetic anomalies in isothermal magnetization, peak/hump features in field-evolution of ac susceptibility and longitudinal resistivity suggest the signature of topological magnetic phases. The anomalous Hall effect is quantitatively accounted for by the intrinsic Berry curvature-mediated mechanism. Finally, our results underscore polar magnets as a promising platform to investigate a plethora of emergent electrodynamic responses rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology.

Light-induced anomalous Hall conductivity in the massive three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Co 3 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢S 2

Weyl semimetals can emerge from Dirac semimetals when the time-reversal or spatial-inversion symmetries are broken. Recently, it has been proposed based on Floquet theory that Dirac semimetals can be converted into Weyl semimetals even by shining circularly polarized light (CPL). Here we have investigated the possibility of such a Dirac-Weyl conversion by measuring the CPL-induced anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) in a massive 3D Dirac semimetal Co 3 ⁢Sn 2 ⁢S 2 in the paramagnetic phase using ultrafast midinfrared pump-terahertz Faraday rotation probe spectroscopy. We find that the field-strength and driving frequency dependence of the observed AHC is well accounted for by CPL-induced nonzero Berry curvature associated with the splitting of the Dirac bands as predicted by the Floquet theory. As a result, the estimated splitting of the Dirac bands reaches about 60% of the mass gap and the calculated CPL-induced AHC quantitatively reproduces the experimental observation, demonstrating a promising route toward the realization of Floquet-Weyl states from massive Dirac semimetals.

Enhancement of α -particle formation near Sn 100

The superfluid tunneling model is applied to the calculation of ground-state-to-ground-state α decay in the even-even neutron-deficient Te-Ba nuclei. Here, we show that there is a larger α-particle formation probability in nuclei of this region above 100 Sn when compared to analogous nuclei above 208 Pb. This is consistent with the expected systematic variation of the pair gap Δ as a function of mass number. Finally, the recent experimental data on the α decay of the N=Z nuclei 104 Te and 108 Xe are shown to leave open the possibility of enhanced α-particle formation involving nucleon correlations beyond the standard treatment of like-nucleon pairing, which is the mechanism suggested as underlying "superallowed" α decay.

Transfer reactions in 206 $\mathrm{Pb}$ + 118 $\mathrm{Sn}$: From quasielastic to deep-inelastic processes

Here, we measured multinucleon transfer reactions for the 206 Pb+ 118 Sn system at E lab =1200 MeV by employing the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. Differential and total cross sections and Q-value distributions have been obtained for a variety of neutron and proton pick-up and stripping channels. The Q-value distributions show how the quasi-elastic and deep inelastic processes depend on the mass and charge of the transfer products. The corresponding cross sections have been compared with calculations performed with the GRAZING code. An overall good agreement is found for most of the few nucleon transfer channels. The underestimation of the data for channels involving a large number of transferred nucleons indicates that more complicated processes populate the given isotopes.

Old data, new forensics: The first second of SN 1987A neutrino emission

The next Milky Way supernova will be an epochal event in multimessenger astronomy, critical to tests of supernovae, neutrinos, and new physics. Realizing this potential depends on having realistic simulations of core collapse. Here, we investigate the neutrino predictions of modern models (1-, 2-, and 3-D) over the first ≃1 s, making the first detailed comparisons of these models to each other and to the SN 1987A neutrino data. Even with different methods and inputs, the models generally agree with each other. However, even considering the low neutrino counts, the models generally disagree with data. What can cause this? We show that neither neutrino oscillations nor different progenitor masses appear to be a sufficient solution. We outline urgently needed work.

Realizing Kagome Band Structure in Two-Dimensional Kagome Surface States of RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho)

Here, we report angle resolved photoemission experiments on a newly discovered family of kagome metals RV 6 Sn 6 (R = Gd, Ho). Intrinsic bulk states and surface states of the vanadium kagome layer are differentiated from those of other atomic sublattices by the real-space resolution of the measurements with a small beam spot. Characteristic Dirac cone, saddle point, and flat bands of the kagome lattice are observed. Our results establish the two-dimensional (2D) kagome surface states as a new platform to investigate the intrinsic kagome physics.

Order-Disorder Transitions in ( Ca x Sr 1 - x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13

The classification of structural phase transitions as displacive or order-disorder in character is usually based on spectroscopic data above the transition. Here, we use single crystal x-ray diffraction to investigate structural correlations in the quasiskutterudites, (Ca x Sr 1-x ) 3 Rh 4 Sn 13 , which have a quantum phase transition at x ~ 0.9. Three-dimensional pair distribution functions show that the amplitudes of local atomic displacements are temperature independent below the transition and persist to well above the transition, a signature of order-disorder behavior. The implications for the associated electronic transitions are discussed.

Ultrafast Dynamics of Intrinsic Anomalous Hall Effect in the Topological Antiferromagnet Mn 3 Sn

Here, we investigate ultrafast dynamics of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the topological antiferromagnet Mn 3 ⁢Sn with sub-100 fs time resolution. Optical pulse excitations largely elevate the electron temperature up to 700 K, and terahertz probe pulses clearly resolve ultrafast suppression of the AHE before demagnetization. The result is well reproduced by microscopic calculation of the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism while the extrinsic contribution is clearly excluded. Our work opens a new avenue for the study of nonequilibrium AHE to identify the microscopic origin by drastic control of the electron temperature by light.
