The development of spectro-signature indicators of root disease impacts on forest stands

A field research program was begun in 1969 and intensified in 1970 on the physiology and biophysical responses of second-growth Douglas fir infected with root rot fungus. A double tramway system was suspended between three 100-foot instrument towers to carry sensors for measuring the energy response from above both healthy and infected trees. Processing and analysis was completed of airborne multispectral scanner imagery collected over the Wind River research area in 1969. Likelihood ratio processing of three-channel infrared data and Euclidean distance analysis of ten-channel spectrometer data did not identify incipient root rot infection outside the training sets. In all cases infected fir was misclassified as healthy fir. It was concluded from careful examination of physiological data that Poria root rot infection has little effect on water metabolism and energy exchange. What was identified was a low-grade stress that affects respiration and metabolism over long periods of time. This led to minor changes in the external physical symptoms of Poria-infected trees which was revealed only in the shortwave reflectance data.

Study of oxygen gas production phenomenon during stand and discharge in silver-zinc batteries

The effects of a number of cell process and performance variables upon the oxygen evolution rate of silver/silver oxide cathodes are studied to predict and measure the conditions which would result in the production of a minimum of oxygen. The following five tasks comprise the study: the design and fabrication of two pilot test cells to be used for electrode testing; the determination of the sensitivity and accuracy of the test cell; the determination of total volumes and rates of generation by cathodes of standard production procedures; the construction of a sequential test plan; and the construction of a series of positive formation cells in which formation process factors can be controlled.

Universal computer test stand (recommended computer test requirements)

Techniques are considered which would be used to characterize areospace computers with the space shuttle application as end usage. The system level digital problems which have been encountered and documented are surveyed. From the large cross section of tests, an optimum set is recommended that has a high probability of discovering documented system level digital problems within laboratory environments. Defined is a baseline hardware, software system which is required as a laboratory tool to test aerospace computers. Hardware and software baselines and additions necessary to interface the UTE to aerospace computers for test purposes are outlined.

Analysis research for earth resource information systems - Where do we stand

Discussion of the state of the technology of earth resources information systems relative to future operational implementation. The importance of recognizing the difference between systems with image orientation and systems with numerical orientation is illustrated in an example concerning the effect of noise on multiband multispectral data obtained in an agricultural experiment. It is suggested that the data system hardware portion of the total earth resources information system be designed in terms of a numerical orientation; it is argued, however, that this choise is entirely compatible with image-oriented analysis tasks. Some aspects of interfacing such an advanced technology with an operational user community in such a way as to accommodate the user's need for flexibility and yet provide the services needed on a cost-effective basis are discussed.

LTA in the USA - Here's where it stands today

Lighter than air (LTA) vehicles were the first aircraft to fly and, until the disasters of the 1930s, were thought by many to be the primary mode of air transport. The history of LTA in the United States is briefly traced and the reasons for the current revival in interest are discussed. The focal point for this revival was the LTA Workshop hosted by M.I.T. under the joint sponsorship of the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Navy, Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Transportation. The Workshop and its results are discussed in detail.

A stand-alone interactive graphics finite element modeling system

The finite element modeling (FEM) system described here is an interactive graphics system designed for use with an intelligent terminal. It offers an economical alternative to the conventional methods (hand compilation and remote terminals) of 2 and 3-dimensional model generation. Using local computing and local storage, this FEM system allows the operator to create and display 3-dimensional models entirely off-line from the host computer. This eliminates costly on-line computer and host-processing time, and makes the user more effective by greatly reducing computer response time. The system allows model generation by down-loading node and element data from the host computer or by using the system's model generation operations for digitizing and automatic creation. The system then generates completed model information in the desired analysis package's bulk data format and transmits it to the host computer for finite element analysis.
