Excluded-volume model for quarkyonic matter: Three-flavor baryon-quark mixture

The single-flavor excluded-volume model based on the effective size of baryons reproduces the hard-soft density evolution of the equation of state (EoS) required by the recent studies of GW170817. This phenomenological model basically realizes the concept of quarkyonic matter which is introduced from large-$N_c$ gauge theory for dense matter. Further, enhanced nucleon interactions and dynamically generated quark degrees of freedom can reproduce the hard-soft evolution of the EoS. In this paper, we extend the excluded-volume model to a three-flavor system by considering electromagnetic charge and possible weak equilibrium in order to obtain a proper description for the hard-soft behavior of the EoS inferred from the gravitational waves observations.

Bayesian inference of the dense-matter equation of state encapsulating a first-order hadron-quark phase transition from observables of canonical neutron stars

The remarkable progress in recent multimessenger observations of both isolated neutron stars (NSs) and their mergers has provided some of the much needed data to improve our understanding about the equation of state (EOS) of dense neutron-rich matter. Various EOSs with or without some kinds of phase transitions from hadronic to quark matter (QM) have been widely used in many forward modelings of NS properties. Direct comparisons of these predictions with observational data sometimes also using χ 2 minimizations have provided very useful constraints on the model EOSs. Furthermore, it is normally difficult to perform uncertain quantifications and analyze correlations of the EOS model parameters involved in forward modelings especially when the available data are still very limited.

Embedding a critical point in a hadron to quark-gluon crossover equation of state

Lattice QCD simulations have shown unequivocally that the transition from hadrons to quarks and gluons is a crossover when the baryon chemical potential is zero or small. Many model calculations predict the existence of a critical point at a value of the chemical potential where current lattice simulations are unreliable. We show how to embed a critical point in a smooth background equation of state so as to yield the critical exponents and critical amplitude ratios expected of a transition in the same universality class as the liquid-gas phase transition and the three-dimensional Ising model. There are only two independent critical exponents; the relations α + 2β + γ = 2 and β(δ-1) = γ arise automatically, as does a relation between the two critical amplitudes. The resulting equation of state has parameters that may be inferred by hydrodynamic modeling of heavy-ion collisions in the Beam Energy Scan II at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider or in experiments at other accelerators.

Linear Boltzmann transport for jet propagation in the quark-gluon plasma: Inelastic processes and jet modification

A linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) Monte Carlo model has been developed to describe jet propagation and interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A complete set of elastic-scattering processes and medium-induced gluon emissions based on the higher-twist formalism are incorporated for both jet shower and medium recoil partons. It has been employed to describe experimental data on large transverse momentum hadron and jet spectra, correlation and jet substructures in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Here, we document in detail the structure of the model and validation of the Monte Carlo implementations of the physics processes in LBT, in particular, the inelastic process of medium-induced gluon radiation. We carry out a comprehensive examination of the jet-medium interaction as implemented in LBT through energy loss and momentum broadening of a single hard parton, the energy and transverse momentum transfer from leading partons to medium-induced gluons and jet-induced medium excitation, and medium modification of reconstructed jets in a static and uniform medium. With realistic and event-by-event hydrodynamic medium in heavy-ion collisions, we compute and compare with experimental data on the jet cone-size dependence of the single inclusive jet suppression at both the BNL Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the dijet asymmetry at the LHC and γ-jet correlation at RHIC. Effects of medium-induced gluon emissions and jet-induced medium excitation on jet observables are systematically examined. Rescatterings of the radiated gluons and recoil partons with the QGP are found essential to account for the enhancement of soft particle yield toward the edge of the jet cone.

Covariant formulation of spinodal decomposition in rapidly expanding quark gluon plasma

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is expected to have a first order phase transition between the confined hadron gas and the deconfined quark gluon plasma at high baryon densities. This will result in phase boundary effects in the metastable and unstable regions. It is important to include these effects in phenomenological models of heavy ion collisions to identify experimental signatures of a phase transition. This requires building intuition on phase separation in rapidly expanding fluids. In this work we present the covariant equations of relativistic hydrodynamics with a phase boundary, provide prescriptions to extend the equation of state to metastable and unstable regions, and show the effects of spinodal separation in a Bjorken flow. Quark flavor balancing in nuclear collisions

The notion of charge balance function, originally designed to study the evolution of charge production in heavy-ion collisions, is extended to consider quark flavor balancing. This extension is considered based on simulations performed with the PYTHIA 8 event generator in the context of pp collisions at √𝑠 = 13.6, 7, and 2.76 TeV but can be trivially applied to any other scenario and implemented in measurements of correlated particle production in pp, pA, and AA collisions at colliders. Correlation of selected flavor balancing pairs is examined as a function of the produced charged particle multiplicity. One finds that the amplitude of the correlations increases monotonically with the number of balanced flavors and the actual flavor content of correlated particles.

Renormalization scale setting for heavy quark pair production in $e^+e^–$ annihilation near the threshold region

Heavy fermion pair production in e + e – annihilation is a fundamental process in hadron physics and is of considerable interest for various phenomena. In this paper, we will apply the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) to provide a comprehensive analysis of these processes. The PMC provides a systematic, unambiguous method for determining the renormalization scales of the QCD coupling constant for single-scale and multiple-scale applications. The resulting predictions eliminate any renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities, eliminate the factorial renormalon divergences, and are consistent with the requirements of the renormalization group. It is remarkable that two distinctly different scales are determined by using the PMC for heavy fermion pair production near the threshold region. One scale is the order of the fermion mass m f , which enters the hard virtual corrections, and the other scale is of order v m f , where v is the quark velocity, which enters the Coulomb rescattering amplitude. The PMC scales yield the correct physical behavior and reflect the virtuality of the propagating gluons (photons) for the QCD (QED) processes. Moreover, we demonstrate the consistency of PMC scale setting from QCD to QED. Perfect agreement between the Abelian unambiguous Gell-Mann-Low and the PMC scale-setting methods in the limit of zero number of colors is demonstrated.

Determination of crossing-symmetric π π scattering amplitudes and the quark mass evolution of the σ constrained by lattice QCD

Lattice QCD spectra can be used to constrain partial-wave scattering amplitudes that, while satisfying unitarity, do not have to respect crossing symmetry and analyticity. This becomes a particular problem when extrapolated far from real energies, e.g. in the case of broad resonances like the σ , leading to large systematic uncertainties in the pole position. In this manuscript, we will show how dispersion relations can implement the additional constraints, using as input lattice-determined π π partial-wave scattering amplitudes with isospin–0,1,2. We will show that only certain combinations of amplitude parametrizations satisfy all constraints, and that when we restrict to these, the σ pole position is determined with minimal systematic uncertainty. The evolution of the now well-constrained σ pole with varying light quark mass is presented, showing how it transitions from a bound-state to a broad resonance. Dijet and electroweak limits on a Z ′ boson coupled to quarks

An insightful way of presenting the LHC limits on dijet resonances is the coupling-mass plot for a Z ′ boson that has flavor-independent quark interactions. This also illustrates the comparison of low-mass LHC sensitivity with constraints on the flavor-independent Z ′ boson from electroweak and quarkonium measurements. To derive these constraints, we compute the Z ′ mixing with the Z , the photon, and the ϒ meson, emphasizing the logarithmic dependence on the masses of the new electroweak-charged fermions (“anomalons”) required to cancel the gauge anomalies. We update the coupling-mass plot, extending it for Z ′ masses from 5 GeV to 5 TeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Global fit of electron and neutrino elastic scattering data to determine the strange quark contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the nucleon

We present a global fit of neutral-current elastic (NCE) neutrino-scattering data and parity-violating electron-scattering (PVES) data with the goal of determining the strange quark contribution to the vector and axial form factors of the proton. Previous fits of this form included data from a variety of PVES experiments (PVA4, HAPPEx, G0, SAMPLE) and the NCE neutrino and anti-neutrino data from BNL E734. These fits did not constrain the strangeness contribution to the axial form factor G A s ( Q 2 ) at low Q 2 very well because there was no NCE data for Q 2 < 0.45 GeV 2 . Our new fit includes for the first time MiniBooNE NCE data from both neutrino and antineutrino scattering; this experiment used a hydrocarbon target and so a model of the neutrino interaction with the carbon nucleus was required. Three different nuclear models have been employed: a relativistic Fermi gas model, the superscaling approximation model, and a spectral function model. We find a tremendous improvement in the constraint of G A s ( Q 2 ) at low Q 2 compared to previous work, although more data is needed from NCE measurements that focus on exclusive single-proton final states, for example from MicroBooNE. Color chiral Cherenkov radiation and energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma

We introduce and investigate the color chiral Cherenkov effect which consists in radiation of the circularly polarized gluons by a fast color charge moving with constant velocity in the presence of the chiral magnetic current. We derive the transition rates for all gluon polarizations. We compute the contribution of the color chiral Cherenkov effect to the parton energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma. Gravitational form factors and mechanical properties of quarks in protons: A basis light-front quantization approach

We compute the gravitational form factors (GFFs) and study their applications for the description of the mechanical properties such as the pressure, shear force distributions, and the mechanical radius of the proton from its light-front wave functions (LFWFs) based on basis light-front quantization (BLFQ). The LFWFs of the proton are given by the lowest eigenvector of a light-front effective Hamiltonian that incorporates a three-dimensional confining potential and a one-gluon exchange interaction with fixed coupling between the constituent quarks solved in the valence Fock sector. We find acceptable agreement between our BLFQ computations and the lattice QCD for the GFFs. Our D -term form factor also agrees well with the extracted data from the deeply virtual Compton scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab, and the results of different phenomenological models. The distributions of pressures and shear forces are similar to those from different models. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Tetraquarks from intrinsic heavy quarks

A number of new tetraquark candidate states containing from one to four charm or anticharm quarks have been observed recently. Many of these new states have been discovered at the LHC. The production of these states via intrinsic charm in the proton is investigated. The tetraquark masses obtained in this approach, while dependent on the internal transverse momenta of the partons in the state, are shown to agree well with the measured masses. These calculations can provide some insight into the nature of the tetraquark candidates, whether as a bound meson pair or as a looser configuration of four individual partons. The kinematic distributions of these states as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum are also studied. The possible cross sections for these states are finally considered, with a comparison to the 𝑋⁡(3872) 𝑝 𝑇 distributions from 𝑝 +𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV.

Nucleon tomography and total angular momentum of valence quarks from synergy between lattice QCD and elastic scattering data

We present an exploratory work on integrating lattice-QCD results with experimental data for elastic scattering. Within the framework of generalized parton distributions, this approach allows for the extraction of detailed information about nucleon tomography and the total angular momentum carried by valence quarks. To accomplish this reliably, we introduce a new quantity, the “double ratio,” which significantly reduces the systematic uncertainties inherent in lattice QCD computations. Moreover, we introduce a “shadow” term in the extraction procedure, which is sensitive only to lattice-QCD results. This term allows us to investigate the model dependence of the extraction, providing a more flexible description of the nucleon that goes beyond the previously considered bell-shaped distribution.

String breaking in the heavy quark limit with scalable circuits

Quantum simulations of non-Abelian gauge theories require efficient mappings onto quantum computers and practical state preparation and measurement procedures. A truncation of the Hilbert space of non-Abelian lattice gauge theories with matter in the heavy quark limit is developed. This truncation is applied to SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 1+1D to map the theory efficiently onto a quantum computer. Scalable variational circuits are found to prepare the vacuum and single meson states. It is also shown how these state preparation circuits can be used to perform measurements of the number of mesons produced during the system’s time evolution. A state with a single qq¯ pair is prepared on quantum hardware and the inelastic production of qq¯ pairs is observed using 104 qubits on IBM’s Heron quantum computer ibm_torino.

Does a Quark-Gluon Plasma Feature an Extended Hydrodynamic Regime?

Here we investigate the response of the near-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma (QGP) to perturbation at nonhydrodynamic gradients. We propose a conceivable scenario under which sound mode continues to dominate the medium response in this regime. Such a scenario has been observed experimentally for various liquids and liquid metals. We further show that this extended hydrodynamic regime (EHR) indeed exists for both the weakly coupled kinetic equation in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) and the strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We construct a simple but nontrivial extension of Müller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) theory—namely MIS*—and demonstrate that it describes the EHR response for both the RTA and SYM theory. This indicates that MIS* equations can potentially be employed to search for QGP EHR via heavy-ion collisions.

Search for Higgs Boson and Observation of $Z$ Boson through Their Decay into a Charm Quark-Antiquark Pair in Boosted Topologies in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson ($H$) produced with transverse momentum ($p_T$) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to a charm quark-antiquark ($c\bar{c}$) pair is presented. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. Boosted $H \to c\overline{c}$ decay products are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet and identified using a deep neural network charm tagging technique. The method is validated by measuring the $Z \to c\bar{c}$ decay process, which is observed in association with jets at high $p_T$ for the first time with a signal strength of $1.00^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ (syst)$\pm 0.08$ (theo) $\pm 0.06$ (stat), defined as the ratio of the observed process rate to the SM expectation. The observed (expected) upper limit on $\sigma (H){\cal B}(H \to c\overline{c})$ is set at 47 (39) times the SM prediction at 95\%confidence level.

Search for Nonresonant Pair Production of Highly Energetic Higgs Bosons Decaying to Bottom Quarks

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson ($H$) pair production via gluon and vector boson ($V$) fusion is performed in the four-bottom-quark final state, using proton-proton collision data at 13 TeV corresponding to 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis targets Lorentz-boosted $H$ pairs identified using a graph neural network. It constrains the strengths relative to the standard model of the $H$ self-coupling and the quartic VVHH couplings, $κ_{2V}$, excluding $κ_{2V} = 0$ for the first time, with a significance of 6.3 standard deviations when other H couplings are fixed to their standard model values.
