Practical applications of surface analytic tools in tribology

A brief description of many of the widely used tools is presented. Of this list, those which have the highest applicability for giving elemental and/or compound analysis for problems of interest in tribology along with being truly surface sensitive (that is less than 10 atomic layers) are presented. The latter group is critiqued in detail in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Emphasis is placed on post facto analysis of experiments performed under real conditions (e.g., in air with lubricants). It is further indicated that such equipment could be used for screening and quality control.

Design, fabrication and test of graphite/polyimide composite joints and attachments for advanced aerospace vehicles

Bonded and bolted designs are presented for each of four major attachment types. Prepreg processing problems are discussed and quality control data are given for lots 2W4604, 2W4632 and 2W4643. Preliminary design allowables test results for tension tests and compression tests of laminates are included. The final small specimen test matrix is defined and the configuration of symmetric step-lap joint specimens are shown. Finite element modeling studies of a double lap joint were performed to evaluate the number of elements required through the adhesive thickness to assess effects of various joint parameters on stress distributions. Results of finite element analyses assessing the effect of an adhesive fillet on the stress distribution in a double lap joint are examined.

Helicopter /RSRA/ in-flight escape system - Component qualification

The paper describes the design, development, and qualification approach for the RSRA (Rotor Systems Research Aircraft) system explosive and pyrotechnic components. The approach was based on previous experience and included: (1) the application of good design practice and quality control, (2) a thorough examination of component interfaces through demonstration testing of functional margins, (3) the carrying out of thorough real-world sequential environmental testing, and (4) the operation of environmentally exposed units in subsystem-level tests at temperature, force, and energy limits. Owing largely to this approach, the RSRA became the first helicopter system to contain a fully qualified and operational in-flight escape system.

Producing the high temperature reusable surface insulation for the thermal protection system of the Space Shuttle

The primary insulation system used to protect the space shuttle orbiter on reentry is an externally attached, rigidized, fibrous silica which has been machined into tiles. The tiles constitute the temperature reusable surface insulation system and are used on over 70 percent of the vehicle exterior surface where peak temperatures range from 400 to 1260 C. Cargon-carbon leading edges are used in areas where peak temperatures exceed 1650 C and a felt flexible insulation is used in regions below 400 C. Approximately 32,000 tiles are used in the HRST system and because of vehicle configuration, aerodynamic requirements, and weight considerations no two tiles are alike. Fabrication and quality control procedures are described.

Failure of morphology of (0 deg)8 graphite/epoxy as influenced by environments and processing

Optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the failure morphology of graphite/epoxy specimens which had been tested until tensile failure. Failure morphology was studied as a function of the quality control variables of specimen preparation technique, prepreg batch, and cure condition, and also as a function of the environmental parameters of temperature and moisture content. Defective specimens were found to exhibit a low energy failure morphology. Poor specimen edge preparation and one batch of prepreg when tested at elevated temperature or moisture content also exhibited energy failure morphology. Postcuring had no effect on strength but did slightly alter failure morphology. Temperature or moisture appeared to decrease flaw sensitivity and thus increase strength; however, moisture also appeared to increase interfacial debonding between filament and matrix. When combined moisture and temperature increased interfacial debonding and made the epoxy matrix more prone to fracture.

Creep rupture of polymer-matrix composites

The time-dependent creep-rupture process in graphite-epoxy laminates is examined as a function of temperature and stress level. Moisture effects are not considered. An accelerated characterization method of composite-laminate viscoelastic modulus and strength properties is reviewed. It is shown that lamina-modulus master curves can be obtained using a minimum of normally performed quality-control-type testing. Lamina-strength master curves, obtained by assuming a constant-strain-failure criterion, are presented along with experimental data, and reasonably good agreement is shown to exist between the two. Various phenomenological delayed failure models are reviewed and two (the modified rate equation and the Larson-Miller parameter method) are compared to creep-rupture data with poor results.

Trends in liability affecting technical writers

Liability of technical writers for defective products is explored. Documents generated during a product's life cycle (including design memos, design tests, clinical trials, trial use reports, letters, and proposals) become relevant because they are likely to become the only available means of showing that the product was not defectively designed. These documents become the evidence that the product underwent balanced and well considered planning, development, testing, quality control, and field testing. The predicted increased involvement of technical writers in the prevention and defense of product liability claims is cited in view of a greater number of cases turning on "failure to warn".

Using CAD/CAM to improve productivity - The IPAD approach

Progress in designing and implementing CAD/CAM systems as a result of the NASA Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design is discussed. Essential software packages have been identified as executive, data management, general user, and geometry and graphics software. Data communication, as a means to integrate data over a network of computers of different vendors, provides data management with the capability of meeting design and manufacturing requirements of the vendors. Geometry software is dependent on developmental success with solid geometry software, which is necessary for continual measurements of, for example, a block of metal while it is being machined. Applications in the aerospace industry, such as for design, analysis, tooling, testing, quality control, etc., are outlined.

Optogalvanic wavelength calibration for laser monitoring of reactive atmospheric species

Laser-based techniques have been successfully employed for monitoring atmospheric species of importance to stratospheric ozone chemistry or tropospheric air quality control. When spectroscopic methods using tunable lasers are used, a simultaneously recorded reference spectrum is required for wavelength calibration. For stable species this is readily achieved by incorporating into the sensing instrument a reference cell containing the species to be monitored. However, when the species of interest is short-lived, this approach is unsuitable. It is proposed that wavelength calibration for short-lived species may be achieved by generating the species of interest in an electrical or RF discharge and using optogalvanic detection as a simple, sensitive, and reliable means of recording calibration spectra. The wide applicability of this method is emphasized. Ultraviolet, visible, or infrared lasers, either CW or pulsed, may be used in aircraft, balloon, or shuttle experiments for sensing atoms, molecules, radicals, or ions.

Fabrication of advanced composites

Fabrication techniques for manufacturing advanced composite structures with continuous and short filaments in desired orientations and consolidation within the plies of the structure are described and analyzed. Attention is given to vacuum bag molding, autoclave molding, matched die consolidation of B/Al, B/epoxy, and graphite/epoxy composites, matched die molding of chopped fiber prepregs, thermal expansion molding, braiding, filament winding, sandwich fabrication, and pultrusions. Step-by-step preparation of resin-matrix composites is detailed, including automatic and semiautomatic lay-ups, and problems of quality control are discussed. The review is intended as an engineering aid for choices between competitive designs, and comprises factors other than technical features alone, such as cost effectiveness, ease of inspection, and economics of maintenance.
