A note on relative motion in the general three-body problem.

It is shown that the equations of the general three-body problem take on a very symmetric form when one considers only their relative positions, rather than position vectors relative to some given coordinate system. From these equations one quickly surmises some well known classical properties of the three-body problem, such as the first integrals and the equilateral triangle solutions. Some new Lagrangians with relative coordinates are also obtained. Numerical integration of the new equations of motion is about 10% faster than with barycentric or heliocentric coordinates.

Note on the modified two-stream approximation of Sagan and Pollack.

The modified two-stream approximation is derived from the radiative transfer equation using a two-point gaussian quadrature and neglecting terms of order l equal to or greater than 3 in the Legendre expansion of the phase function. The results are compared with the Eddington approximation and with exact results for the special cases of perfect absorption, perfect scattering, and a semi-infinite layer with isotropic scattering.

Notes for the improvement of the spatial and spectral data classification method

This report examines the spatial and spectral clustering technique for the unsupervised automatic classification and mapping of earth resources satellite data, and makes theoretical analysis of the decision rules and tests in order to suggest how the method might best be applied to other flight data such as Skylab and Spacelab.

A note on parallel and pipeline computation of fast unitary transforms

The parallel and pipeline organization of fast unitary transform algorithms such as the Fast Fourier Transform are discussed. The efficiency is pointed out of a combined parallel-pipeline processor of a transform such as the Haar transform in which 2 to the n minus 1 power hardware butterflies generate a transform of order 2 to the n power every computation cycle.

Notes on the concept of normal values employed in clinical practice

The question of the considerable variations in various blood parameters under the influence of changes in environmental factors is discussed. Recommendations are given that so-called normal values should be given special attention. Fibrinolytic and fibrinogenolytic activity studies on the blood in healthy human beings revealed significant differences for individual months and even on specific days. Changes in the activity of fibrinolysis and fibrinogenolysis show a correlation with changes in the meteorological conditions, seasonal variations and changes in solar activity.

A note on the annual cycles of surface heat balance and temperature over a continent

A surface heating function, defined as the ratio of the time derivative of the mean annual temperature curve to the surface heat balance, is computed from the annual temperature range and heat balance data for the North American continent. An annual cycle of the surface heat balance is then reconstructed from the surface heating function and the annual temperature curve, and an annual cycle of evaporative plus turbulent heat loss is recomputed from the annual cycles of radiation balance and surface heat balance for the continent. The implications of these results for long range weather forecasting are discussed.

Cautionary note concerning the CuSO4 X-ray laser

For the so far unconfirmed lasing action claimed by Kepros et al. (1972) to have been obtained by focusing a 1.06-micron radiation of a q-switched Nd(3+) glass laser to a small cylindrical volume inside a CuSO4-doped gelatin medium supported between two glass plates, an alternate explanation is proposed that does not depend on the assumption of laser action in copper. The proposed explanation shows how collimated X-ray beams might be created under the experimental conditions described by Kepros et al.

Some notes on stars near K0

Two hundred giant and subgiant stars near K0 were classified twice by somewhat different techniques. The resulting types were in excellent agreement but a comparison of the assigned types with U, B, V colors indicated both an intrinsic scatter in the colors for stars of similar spectroscopic appearance and a problem in either the luminosity classifications or the standard colors or both. Several peculiar stars and a luminous supergiant were also detected.

A note on the unsteady cavity flow in a tunnel

The unsteady internal cavitating flow such as the one observed in a pump or a turbine is studied for a simple two-dimensional model of a base-cavitating wedge in an infinite tunnel and it is shown how the cavitation compliance can be calculated using the linearized free streamline theory. Numerical values are obtained for the limiting case of a free jet. Two important features are: First, the cavitation compliance is found to be of complex form, having additional resistive and reactive terms beyond the purely inertial oscillation of the whole channel in 'slug flow.' Second, the compliance has a strong dependence on frequency.

Energetic particle population in the Jovian magnetosphere - A preliminary note

Preliminary account of energetic particle measurements conducted by the Pioneer 10 spacecraft during approach to Jupiter in November and December 1973. Graphs illustrate electron and proton flux levels as a function of distance from the planet for different particle energy intervals. Times of predicted equatorial crossing are marked along with positions corresponding to the bowshock, magnetopause, and other features. The general patterns of particle distribution in the Jovian vicinity are discussed.

Supplementary notes on sea-surface temperature anomalies and model-generated meteorological histories

A numerical experiment was made on the Mintz-Arakawa two-level global general circulation model, investigating the effects of a transient one-month sea-surface temperature (SST) anomaly and of a persistent three-month SST anomaly. The time histories are compared with a control run that lacked the anomaly pattern. After one month, the anomaly and control synoptic patterns were as uncorrelated as any two random fields. It is found that the transient SST anomaly can alter the monthly and seasonal temperature and precipitation in the eastern U.S. by as much as two class intervals. The question of whether the real atmosphere is as sensitive to such an anomaly is raised but cannot be settled at this time.

Note on ultraviolet hydroxyl observations of Comet Kohoutek

Observations of hydroxyl (OH) emission from Comet Kohoutek were made during the evening of 24 January 1974, from an altitude of 41,000 feet. The comet, of visual magnitude 5.5 at the time of observation, was photographed with an f/1.3 Maksutov slitless spectrograph of 150-mm aperture. This spectrograph used a double quartz prism as the dispersion element to isolate the OH radiation in the low-resolution spectrum. A nearly spherical coma of OH about three arc minutes diameter, as observed from an earth-comet distance of 0.88 AV, was photographed. The OH emission was the strongest feature in the spectrum and produced an irradiance of 3 billionths erg per sq cm per sec at the earth.

A note on the influence of axial velocity ratio on cascade performance

A thin airfoil quasi-two-dimensional potential flow theory has been used to analyze cascades with axial-flow contraction. Attention is centered on the flow turning of a lattice of foils as measured by the deviation angle. The influence of both axial-flow acceleration and foil thickness on the deviation angle is summarized in plots that should be useful for design purposes. It is shown that the effect of axial-flow contraction is larger when the foils are relatively far apart than when they are close together. The influence of axial velocity ratio across the cascade changes markedly with the stagger angle. These effects are essentially unaltered due to foil thickness.

A note on the effect of bending stiffness of stringers attached to a plate with a crack

An infinite stringer partially bonded to a plate through a layer of adhesive is considered. The stringer had bending as well as longitudinal stiffness. The effect of the stringer's bending rigidity on the stress intensity factor at the tip of the crack is illustrated. Shear stress distribution between the plate and the stringer and the stress intensity factors are obtained from the solution of a system of Fredholm integral equations. The continuity of displacements along the line of bond is represented by the equations.
