Unlocking High Capacity and Fast Na + Diffusion of H x CrS 2 by Proton-Exchange Pretreatment

This study presents a new material, “H x CrS 2 " (denotes approximate composition) formed by proton-exchange of NaCrS 2 which has a measured capacity of 728 mAh g -1 with significant improvements to capacity retention, sustaining over 700 mAh g -1 during cycling experiments. This is the highest reported capacity for a transition metal sulfide electrode and outperforms the most promising proposed sodium anodes to date. H x CrS 2 exhibits a biphasic structure featuring alternating crystalline and amorphous lamella on the scale of a few nanometers. This unique structural motif enables reversible access to Cr redox in the material resulting in higher capacities than seen in the parent structure which features only S redox. In conclusion, pretreatment by proton-exchange offers a route to materials such as H x CrS 2 which provide fast diffusion and high capacities for sodium-ion batteries.

Anomalous Redox Features Induced by Strong Covalency in Layered NaTi 1-y V y S 2 Cathodes for Na-Ion Batteries

The rising demand for energy density of cathodes means the need to raise the voltage or capacity of cathodes. Transition metal (TM) doping has been employed to enhance the electrochemical properties in multiple aspects. The redox voltage of doped cathodes usually falls in between the voltage of undoped layered cathodes. However, in this study, we found anomalous redox features in NaTi 1-y V y S 2 . The first discharge platform potential (2.4 V) is significantly higher than that of undoped NaTiS 2 and NaVS 2 (both around 2.2 V), and the energy density is raised by 15%. We speculate that the anomalous voltage is mainly attributed to the strong hybridization in the Ti-V-S system. Ti 3+ and V 3+ undergo charge transfer and form a more stable Ti (t 2g 0 e g 0 ) and V (t 2g 3 e g 0 ) electronic configuration. Our results indicate that higher voltage of cathode materials could be achieved by strong TM-ligand covalency, and this conclusion provides possible opportunities to explore high voltage materials for future layered cathodes.

Structural and thermodynamic effects of hydration in Na-zeolite A (LTA) from low-temperature heat capacity

Zeolite A (Linde Type A; LTA) is an industrially important porous mineral that has recently been shown to exhibit framework flexibility upon changes in hydration level. Here, to investigate the flexibility transition from a thermodynamic perspective, we have performed heat capacity measurements on sodium zeolite A at seven incremental hydration levels ranging from zero to equilibrium with ambient air. Excess low-frequency vibrations beyond the predictions of the Debye model are found in all samples, and the frequency of these vibrations increases as a function of hydration level. This suggests that an increase in hydration causes a decrease in at least one type of framework flexibility for sodium zeolite A. In addition, a subtle excess heat capacity contribution from 150 to 280 K is observed only for low and intermediate hydration levels, which may arise from a transformation tied to framework flexibility previously observed in zeolite A via gas absorption calorimetry. Values of the standard thermodynamic functions C p,m °, Δ 0 T S m °, Δ 0 T H m °, and Φ m ° are also reported.
