Improved Phase-Lock Detector

Single detection channel is used alternately by in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signals, under control of a dither switch. By eliminating errors caused by unbalance of the I and Q channels, this dither-balanced detector reduces false locking. Can be used to improve detection probability and reduce false alarm probability for any loop that must acquire signal with low signal-to-noise ratio.

Evaluation of axial lock-up of space shuttle main engine bearings from high pressure oxygen turbopump

The mainshaft support bearings of long life turbopumps for use on the space shuttle were evaluated to determine possible causes of failure. Specific aspects examined include the sensitivity of 15 degree versus 25 degree contact angle bearings with regard to heat damage and thermal runaway, the L/D aspects of the turbine end bearing pair with regard to hang-up due to cocking, the hang-up required to support a 44.5 KN axial load without cartridge slipping, the outer race growth as a result of a 44.5 KN axial load, and bearing torque as a function of axial load. Results indicate that hang-up of the cartridge due to bearing heating is a serious problem especially if poor lubrication of the bearing occurs and that race growth due to axial load can contribute to cartridge lock-up. The experimental evaluation of bearing performance under axial loads indicates that the bearing torque is a strong function of surface lubrication.

Lock for Gantry Trolley

Single operator on ground controls trolley-locking mechanism on portable gantry. Mechanism prevents trolley and load from moving along track when gantry is wheeled from one location to another. A downward pull on chain withdraws brakeshoes from trolley wheels. When operator releases chain, brakeshoes reengage to wheels.

Discriminator aided phase lock acquisition for suppressed carrier signals

A discriminator aided technique for acquisition of phase lock to a suppressed carrier signal utilizes a Costas loop which is initially operated open loop and control voltage for its VCXO is derived from a phase detector that compares the VCXO to a reference frequency thus establishing coarse frequency resolution with the received signal. Then the Costas loop is closed with the low-pass filter of the channel having a bandwidth much greater (by a factor of about 10) than in the I channel so that a frequency discriminator effect results to aid carrier resolution. Finally, after carrier acquisition, the Q-channel filter of the Costas loop is switched to a bandwidth substantially equal to that of the I-channel for carrier tracking.

Self-Locking Connector

Connector lock resists vibration, automatically compensates for wear, and exhibits no backlash when parts are seated. Mechanism built into coupling nut on outer connector body. Outer collar turned clockwise to tighten treaded coupling nut, transmitting torque to coupling nut through six radially oriented pins.

Carrier arraying with coupled phase-locked loops for tracking improvement

This paper considers a system that couples several phase-locked loops (PLL's) to improve carrier tracking performance. The system coherently combines the received carrier signals at geographically separated ground antennas to increase the total effective aperture. It automatically aligns the received carrier's phases to enhance received carrier signal-to-noise ratio. The tracking performance of this system is being assessed in terms of rms phase jitter.

Diffraction coupled phase-locked semiconductor laser array

A new monolithic, diffraction coupled phase-locked semiconductor laser array has been fabricated. Stable narrow far-field patterns (approximately 3 deg) and peak power levels of 1 W have been obtained for 100-micron-wide devices with threshold currents as low as 250 mA. Such devices may be useful in applications where high power levels and stable radiation patterns are needed.

Timing performance of phased-locked loops in optical pulse position modulation communication systems

An optical digital communication system requires that an accurate clock signal be available at the receiver for proper synchronization with the transmitted signal. Phase synchronization is especially critical in M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) systems where the optimum decision scheme is an energy detector which compares the energy in each of M time slots to decide which of M possible words was sent. Timing errors cause energy spillover into adjacent time slots (a form of intersymbol interference) so that only a portion of the signal energy may be attributed to the correct time slot. This effect decreases the effective signal, increases the effective noise, and increases the probability of error. A timing subsystem for a satellite-to-satellite optical PPM communication link is simulated. The receiver employs direct photodetection, preprocessing of the detected signal, and a phase-locked loop for timing synchronization. The variance of the relative phase error is examined under varying signal strength conditions as an indication of loop performance, and simulation results are compared to theoretical calculations.

Coupled-mode analysis of phase-locked injection laser arrays

A coupled-mode analysis has been developed to describe the output of phase-locked injection laser arrays. It is shown that an array of emitters with weak coupling can only operate in a set of discrete modes determined by the number of and the spacing of the emitters. The interaction between emitters leads to a splitting of the common frequency of operation that can be estimated from the coupling strength. The coupled-mode analysis is compared to calculations based on simple diffraction theory. A consequence of the analysis is an explanation for the commonly observed discrepancy between experimentally observed far-field lobe widths and those predicted by simple diffraction theory.

Phase-locked injection laser arrays with nonuniform stripe spacing

A new type of phase-locked injection laser array which utilises nonuniform spacing between the lasing stripes has been studied. The variation in spacing alters the stripe-to-stripe coupling which modifies the array mode selection. Arrays that operate with a single far-field lobe have been fabricated.

Controlled fundamental supermode operation of phase-locked arrays of gain-guided diode lasers

Uniform semiconductor laser arrays tend to oscillate in a superposition of their supermodes, thus leading to large beam divergence and spectral spread. Discrimination among the supermodes in phase-locked arrays is discussed theoretically. It is shown that supermode discrimination in gain-guided arrays, in favor of the fundamental supermode, is made possible by the near-field interference patterns which result from the complex optical fields of the gain-guided lasers. A fundamental supermode operation is demonstrated, for the first time, in GaAlAs/GaAs gain-guided laser arrays. This is achieved by control of the current (gain) profile across the array by means of individual laser contacts.

Aircraft Canopy Lock

Mechanism easy to open intentionally but resists accidental opening. Locking or Unlocking occurs when pull pin enters or leaves conical base. Pushing ejection pin or pulling knob unlocks mechanism. Unintentional release unlikely since accidental pilot motions push on knob in most cases. This safety feature, coupled with simplicity and reliability of mechanism, useful for emergency exits for land vehicles or even buildings.
