Nanoparticle surfactants and structured liquids

Materials are usually classified as solids or liquids, based on their structural stability, dynamic response, and rheological properties. Structured liquid, a new state of matter, has attracted much attention in recent years. Different with either solid or liquid, structured liquid combines the desirable characteristics of fluids with the structural stability of a solid, showing a myriad of potential applications in encapsulation, biphasic reactors, and programmable liquid constructs. Here, a brief review is given, by introducing a new strategy to structure liquids based on the formation, assembly, and jamming of nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid-liquid interfaces. Furthermore, the interfacial packing of the NPSs can be effectively manipulated using external triggers, endowing the structured liquids with adaptiveness and responsiveness to changes in their external environment.

Modelling the ejection of primary aerosols during the fast pyrolysis of biomass anisotropic particles

A model for the fast pyrolysis of anisotropic biomass particles is presented which considers bubbling dynamics within the liquid intermediate phase (metaplast) and aerosol ejection from this phase. The model employs the population balance equation and the method of moments to estimate the production rate and resultant size distribution of aerosol ejections, incorporating a detailed CRECK reaction mechanism, and considers the effect of anisotropic biomass microstructure on the intraparticle transport of mass and energy. Here, this study investigates the impact of particle size, heating rate (heat transfer coefficient), and lignocellulosic composition on aerosol ejection. The model predicts that, at high heating rates (convective heat transfer coefficient of 359 W/m 2 .K), aerosols can contribute over 20% to the heavy fraction yield in bio-oil for small particles (1 mm diameter, 4 mm length). The model can predict aerosol size distribution and surface area, indicating an average size of 20 μm for bubbles and 5 μm for aerosols during increased bubble production and aerosol ejection rates. These findings are consistent with prior experimental results and provide essential information for future modeling of extra-particle reactions of the aerosols as they progress through the reactor.

Lowering the Activation Barriers for Lithium-Ion Conductivity through Orientational Disorder in the Cyanide Argyrodite Li6PS5CN

Rapid advancements in safe and high-energy-density energy storage are predicated on identifying new solid-state ion conductors with low activation energies and high ionic conductivities for all-solid-state battery technologies. Halide argyrodites are among some of the top candidates for solid-state electrolytes, as they can achieve ionic conductivities that approach liquid electrolytes. Incorporating dynamic pseudohalide species in argyrodite solid electrolytes presents an exciting opportunity to exploit lattice dynamics as a design principle to modulate the ion conduction properties of solid-state ion conductors. In the present study, we have prepared the new argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN containing orientationally disordered cyanide ions. The new cyanide argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 CN exhibits an activation barrier to Li-ion transport of 471 ± 25 meV and a room-temperature ionic conductivity of 6(2) × 10 –5 S cm –1 in comparison to the activation barrier of 502 ± 16 meV and an ionic conductivity of 2.3(1) × 10 –4 S cm –1 measured for the bromide analogue Li 6 PS 5 Br. Structural studies of both compounds by high-resolution X-ray diffraction indicate that Li 6 PS 5 CN and Li 6 PS 5 Br adopt nearly identical crystal structures with similar lattice parameters, which indicates that lower activation barriers in Li 6 PS 5 CN arise due to the cyanide ion itself rather than due to changes in the geometry of conduction pathways in the local lithium environment. The orientational disorder of the quadrupolar cyanide ion in Li 6 PS 5 CN points to a complex interplay of lattice polarizability and molecular dynamics that lower the activation barrier for lithium-ion conductivity in the cyanide argyrodite.

Tunable angle-dependent electrochemistry at twisted bilayer graphene with moiré flat bands

Tailoring electron transfer dynamics across solid–liquid interfaces is fundamental to the interconversion of electrical and chemical energy. Stacking atomically thin layers with a small azimuthal misorientation to produce moiré superlattices enables the controlled engineering of electronic band structures and the formation of extremely flat electronic bands. Here, we report a strong twist-angle dependence of heterogeneous charge transfer kinetics at twisted bilayer graphene electrodes with the greatest enhancement observed near the ‘magic angle’ (~1.1°). Furthermore, this effect is driven by the angle-dependent tuning of moiré-derived flat bands that modulate electron transfer processes with the solution-phase redox couple. Combined experimental and computational analysis reveals that the variation in electrochemical activity with moiré angle is controlled by a structural relaxation of the moiré superlattice at twist angles of <2°, and ‘topological defect’ AA stacking regions, where flat bands are localized, produce a large anomalous local electrochemical enhancement that cannot be accounted for by the elevated local density of states alone.

Correlation between the temperature evolution of the interfacial region and the growing dynamic cooperativity length scale

Here, we study experimentally the temperature evolution of the thickness of the interfacial layer, L int (T), between bulk matrices and the surface of nanoparticles in nanocomposites through broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Analyses revealed a power-law dependence between the logarithm of structural relaxation time in the interfacial layer, τ int (T), and the L int (T): ln τ i n t ( T ) / τ 0 ∝ L i n t β ( T ) / T , with τ 0 ~ 10 –12 s, and β index ~0.67 at high temperatures and ~1.7 at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature. In addition, our analysis revealed that the L int (T) is comparable to the length scale of dynamic heterogeneity estimated from previous nonlinear dielectric measurements and the four-point NMR [ξ NMR (T)], with L int (T) ~ ξ NMR (T). These observations may suggest a direct correlation between the L int (T) and the size of the cooperatively rearranging regions and have strong implications for understanding the dynamic heterogeneity and cooperativity in supercool liquids and their role in interfacial dynamics.

Experimental and theoretical evidence for hydrogen doping in polymer solution-processed indium gallium oxide

The field-effect electron mobility of aqueous solution-processed indium gallium oxide (IGO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) is significantly enhanced by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) addition to the precursor solution, a >70-fold increase to 7.9 cm 2 /Vs. To understand the origin of this remarkable phenomenon, microstructure, electronic structure, and charge transport of IGO:PVA film are investigated by a battery of experimental and theoretical techniques, including In K-edge and Ga K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS); resonant soft X-ray scattering (R-SoXS); ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS); Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy; time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS); composition-/processing-dependent TFT properties; high-resolution solid-state 1 H, 71 Ga, and 115 In NMR spectroscopy; and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) analysis with ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) liquid-quench simulations. The 71 Ga{ 1 H} rotational-echo double-resonance (REDOR) NMR and other data indicate that PVA achieves optimal H doping with a Ga···H distance of ~3.4 Å and conversion from six- to four-coordinate Ga, which together suppress deep trap defect localization. This reduces metal-oxide polyhedral distortion, thereby increasing the electron mobility. Finally, hydroxyl polymer doping thus offers a pathway for efficient H doping in green solvent-processed metal oxide films and the promise of high-performance, ultra-stable metal oxide semiconductor electronics with simple binary compositions.

Study made of large amplitude fuel sloshing

Study of resonant oscillations of an ideal fluid in a cylindrical tank is used to obtain a better understanding of fuel sloshing in large liquid booster. More realistic structural design criteria may be formulated when the dynamic response of the liquid in a cylindrical tank can be predicted analytically.

An Analog Computer Study of the Low-Frequency Flow Dynamics of Two Nuclear-Rocket Cold-Flow Engine Systems

An analog computer study is made of the low-frequency flow dynamics observed with liquid hydrogen flowing in two different nuclear-rocket cold-flow (unfueled) engine systems. The prediction of the low-frequency response depends largely upon the generation of the proper mass-flow storage in the system. This is achieved by relating, in the model lumping, the average values of fluid enthalpy and a certain thermodynamic fluid property. A two-phase state equation is derived for thermodynamic equilibrium between the gas and liquid phases. Parametric studies are made which demonstrate the effect of the pump characteristics on the flow damping.

Fluid dynamics and convective heat transfer in impinging jets through implementation of a high resolution liquid crystal technique

A combined convective heat transfer and fluid dynamics investigation in a turbulent round jet impinging on a flat surface is presented. The experimental study uses a high resolution liquid crystal technique for the determination of the convective heat transfer coefficients on the impingement plate. The heat transfer experiments are performed using a transient heat transfer method. The mean flow and the character of turbulent flow in the free jet is presented through five hole probe and hot wire measurements, respectively. The flow field character of the region near the impingement plate plays an important role in the amount of convective heat transfer. Detailed surveys obtained from five hole probe and hot wire measurements are provided. An extensive validation of the liquid crystal based heat transfer method against a conventional technique is also presented. After a complete documentation of the mean and turbulent flow field, the convective heat transfer coefficient distributions on the impingement plate are presented. The near wall of the impingement plate and the free jet region is treated separately. The current heat transfer distributions are compared to other studies available from the literature. The present paper contains complete sets of information on the three dimensional mean flow, turbulent velocity fluctuations, and convective heat transfer to the plate. The experiments also prove that the present nonintrusive heat transfer method is highly effective in obtaining high resolution heat transfer maps with a heat transfer coefficient uncertainty of 5.7 percent.

Angled Injection: Turbulent Flow Hybrid Bearings Comparison to Test Results

Hydrostatic/hydrodynamic (hybrid) journal bearings handling process liquids have limited dynamic stability characteristics and their application as support elements to high speed flexible rotating systems is severely restricted. Measurements on water hybrid bearings with angled orifice injection have demonstrated improved rotordynamic performance with virtual elimination of cross-coupled stiffness coefficients and null or negative whirl frequency ratios. A bulk-flow model for prediction of the static performance and force coefficients of hybrid bearings with angled orifice injection is advanced. The analysis reveals that the fluid momentum exchange at the orifice discharge produces a pressure rise in the hydrostatic recess retards the shear flow induced by journal rotation, and thus, reduces cross-coupling forces. The predictions from the model are compared with experimental measurements for a 45 deg. angled orifice injection, 5 recess water hybrid bearing operating at 10.2, 17.4, and 24.6 krpm and with supply pressures of 4, 5.5, and 7 MPa. The correlations include recess pressures, flow rates, and rotordynamic force coefficients at the journal centered position.
