Waste and treatment stream characterization is an essential part of safe, efficient, and cost-effective processing of Hanford materials. The demand for materials characterization, including chemical, radionuclide, and physical attributes during waste management, transfer, and staging operations in the Hanford tank farms, is expected to significantly increase as the U.S. Department of Energy Office of River Protection (ORP) progresses toward Hanford waste treatment and immobilization. The application of on-line monitoring can greatly improve operation timeframes and reduce costs by providing real-time data and supporting the reduction of necessary grab sample collection. Recently, our team applied Raman online monitoring and chemometric modeling to the supernate of Hanford tank 241-AP-105, and demonstrated the quantitative measurement of nine analytes within this waste. Application of this method has been expanded to additional Hanford tank wastes, AW-102 and AP-107. The performance of the process monitoring instruments and the accuracy of the chemometric models will be assessed. On-line monitoring results will be compared to anion results determined from the current standard, ion-chromatographic and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry methods. Comparisons of both determined values and uncertainties of results will be presented. Results will be shared with personnel working on flowsheet interfaces for the Direct-Feed Low Activity Waste mission at Hanford.

Radioactive waste of domestic generated KAERI, KHNP and KNFC etc. Agency of radioactive waste generation have each waste tracking system and waste streaming. We need to establish integrated waste classification for waste tracking and management efficiency. This study main point is the integration of radioactive waste classification and the cording of domestic generators, waste disposal site, etc. We also created a scenario through this coding. First, This study was able to identify the status of domestic radioactive Waste Tracking System. Second, through this study, WTS scenarios were prepared by analyzing each waste management agency and transportation report. If WTS scenario establish from integration of waste streaming, it will be possible tracking, back tracking and management of radioactive waste more efficiency. Third, This study coded all the sources of radioactive waste generators, acceptor agency, waste classification and treatment. Using this code, we tracking the scenario from generator to acceptor and display it as bar-code. Also, if we later convert this bar-code to a Qr-code, it thought that it will be easier tracking radioactive waste.
Tritiated water was stabilized/solidified by using calcium oxide and a polymer. First, tritiated water was changed into the powder form of calcium hydroxide by addition of tritiated water into calcium oxide. Then the produced calcium hydroxide was solidified in waste form by using a polymer binder. The specimens of waste form prepared by surrogate calcium hydroxide were subjected to compressive strength testing and water immersion testing. In addition, the specimens of waste form prepared by tritiated calcium hydroxide were subjected to leach testing. The mean compressive strength of the specimens containing 40 wt % of the surrogate calcium hydroxide was about 98.5 MPa (14,300 psi). After water immersion testing, there was no distinct change in the appearance of the specimens. The mean compressive strength of the specimens after water immersion was 79.1 MPa (11,470 psi). The mean diffusion coefficient of tritium for the specimens containing 40 wt% of tritiated calcium hydroxide was 5.4 x 10-10 cm{sup 2}/s. These findings indicate that the waste form has enough mechanical integrity and durability for final disposal and releases tritium very slowly. (authors)
Presentation on luminescent sensors for economically critical metal ions presented to Washington & Jefferson College.
Critical metals, such as rare earth elements (REEs), cobalt, lithium, aluminum, nickel, and others, are essential to advanced technologies and renewable energy in particular. Widespread global adoption of renewable energy technologies has spurred dramatic demand increases for these metals; however, the global supply of these metals is highly monopolistic and conventional mining poses economic and environmental challenges. As a result, there is increasing interest in domestic production from alternative resources such as coal and its utilization byproducts. Slow and expensive characterization costs remain a significant barrier for domestic production. Here, luminescent sensing materials and platforms are presented that provide an alternative to the current state-of-the-art characterization methods; highly sensitive and selective sensing materials for cobalt, aluminum, and rare earth elements are presented, as well as compact, inexpensive platforms capable of analyzing signal from these materials for rapid characterization of critical metal content.
