Design criteria monograph for high-load high-speed rolling-contact bearings

Monograph was published which summarizes and systematically orders large body of successful techniques and practices developed for design of liquid rocket engine turbopump bearings. Document was written to organize and present significant experience and knowledge accumulated by NASA in development and operational programs.

Single-stage evaluation of highly-loaded high-Mach-number compressor stages 5. Data and performance of baseline, corner-blow wall suction and combined corner blow wall suction stator

A single-stage compressor with a rotor tip speed of 1600 ft/sec and a 0.5 hub tip ratio was used to investigate the effects of several stator endwall treatment methods on stage range and performance. These endwall treatment methods consisted of stator corner-blow, annular wall suction upstream of stator leading edge, and combined corner-blow and annular wall suction. The overall stage performance with corner blow was essentially the same as the baseline performance. The performance for the annular wall suction and the combined corner-blow and wall suction showed a reduction in peak efficiency of 2.5 percentage points compared to the baseline data.

High energy electron spikes at high latitudes

Over 750 spikes of precipitating electrons with E or = 425 KeV were observed aboard the low altitude polar orbiter OGO-D between 30 July 1967 and 31 December 1967. The spikes may be divided into three distinct populations, depending on whether they occur at latitudes below, at, or above the local limit of trapping.

High latitude scintillation effects on very high frequency /vhf/ and S-band satellite transmissions.

A scintillation study was conducted with the purpose to define the extent of scintillation activity in the S-band region, and to determine if such activities at higher frequencies are caused by ionospheric irregularities similar to those causing scintillations at vhf and lower frequencies. Simultaneous transmissions at 137 and 1695 MHz from polar orbiting satellites were used in this study. Scintillations were found to be present at S-band frequencies in the polar regions; it is concluded that they are caused by ionospheric characteristics similar to those causing scintillations at lower frequencies.
