The general circulation and meridional heat transport of the subtropical South Atlantic determined by inverse methods

The circulation and meridional heat transport of the subtropical South Atlantic Ocean are determined through the application of the inverse method of Wunsch (1978) to hydrographic data from the IGY and METEOR expeditions. Meridional circulation results of the two data sets agree on a northward mass transport of about 20 million metric tons/sec for waters above the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW), and a comparable southward transport of deep waters. Additional gross features held in common are the Benguela, South Equatorial and North Brazilian Coastal currents' northward transport of the Surface Water, and the deflection of the southward-flowing NADW from the South American Coast into the mid ocean by a seamount chain near 20 deg S. Total heat transport is equatorward, with a magnitude of 0.8 X 10 to the 15th W near 30 deg S and indistinguishable from zero near 8 deg S.

Methane and nonmethane hydrocarbon concentrations in the Atlantic marine boundary layer

The reactions of reduced tropospheric trace gases with hydroxyl radicals are thought to play a significant role in global tropospheric photochemistry. Since tropospheric methane and nonmethane hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations will affect the tropospheric hydroxyl radical concentrations, accurate measurements of tropospheric CH4 and NMHC concentrations are necessary. Such measurements were, therefore, included in the first leg (from Hamburg, West Germany to Montevideo, Uruguay) of the 1980-1981 Antarctic Expedition. On the basis of the obtained data, a pronounced gradient between northern and southern hemispheric methane concentrations was observed in the marine boundary layer in the region of the intertropical convergence zone. Methane concentrations gradually decreased from about 1.70 ppmv at 40 deg N latitude to about 1.68 ppmv at 14 deg N latitude, then dropped sharply between 14 deg N and 10 deg N latitude to about 1.61 ppmv. NMHC data are also discussed.

Longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a wing-winglet model designed at M = 0.8, C sub L = 0.4 using linear aerodynamic theory

Wind tunnel test results have been presented herein for a subsonic transport type wing fitted with winglets. Wind planform was chosen to be representative of wings used on current jet transport aircraft, while wing and winglet camber surfaces were designed using two different linear aerodynamic design methods. The purpose of the wind tunnel investigation was to determine the effectiveness of these linear aerodynamic design computer codes in designing a non-planar transport configuration which would cruise efficiently. The design lift coefficient was chosen to be 0.4, at a design Mach number of 0.8. Force and limited pressure data were obtained for the basic wing, and for the wing fitted with the two different winglet designs, at Mach numbers of 0.60, 0.70, 0.75 and 0.80 over an angle of attack range of -2 to +6 degrees, at zero sideslip. The data have been presented without analysis to expedite publication.

Rapid purification of fluorescent enzymes by ultrafiltration

In order to expedite the preparation of fluorescently tagged enzymes for histo/cytochemistry, a previously developed method employing gel column purification was compared with a more rapid modern technique using the Millipore Immersible CX-ultrafilter. Microscopic evaluation of the resulting conjugates showed comparable products. Much time and effort is saved using the new technique.

Alha 81005 meteorite - Chemical evidence for lunar highland origin

During the 1981-82 expedition to Antarctica a one-ounce meteorite was found on the slopes of the Allan Hills Mountain. This meteorite, which was catalogued as ALHA 81005, had unusual characteristics and resembled the lunar highland rocks. In a preliminary study, it was found that the chemical composition of the bulk sample of the meteorite matched closely with the Apollo 15 15418 highland rock which Laul and Schmitt (1973) analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). The chemical data obtained for the clast, matrix, and bulk material of the ALHA 81005 meteorite are listed in a table together with corresponding data for the Apollo 15 15418 highland rock and the Luna 16 21013 highland rock. The close agreement of the data for the meteorite and the two lunar rocks suggests strongly that the ALHA 81005 is of lunar highland origin.

Prediction of composite hygral behavior made simple

A convenient procedure is described to determine the hygral behavior (moisture expansion coefficients and moisture stresses) of angleplied fiber composites using a pocket calculator. The procedure consists of equations and appropriate graphs for various (+ or - theta) ply combinations. These graphs present reduced stiffness and moisture expansion coefficients as functions of (+ or - theta) in order to simplify and expedite the use of the equations. The procedure is applicable to all types of balanced, symmetric fiber composites including interply and intraply hybrids. The versatility and generality of the procedure is illustrated using several step-by-step numerical examples. Previously announced in STAR as N82-16181

Nitrate in the Greenland ice sheet in the years following the 1908 Tunguska event

The Tunguska event on June 30, 1908 has been subjected to much speculation within different fields of research. Publication of the results of the 1961 expedition to the Tunguska area (Florensky, 1963) supports the view that a cometary impact caused the event. Based on this interpretation, calculations of the impactor energy release and explosion height have been reported by Ben-Menahem (1975), and velocity, mass, and density of the impactor by Petrov and Stulov (1975). Park (1978) and Turco et al. (1981, 1982) used these numbers to calculate a production of ca. 30,000,000 tons of NO during atmospheric transit. This paper presents a high-resolution study of nitrate concentration in the Greenland ice sheet in ca. 10 years covering the Tunguska event. No signs of excess nitrate are found in three ice cores from two different sites in Greenland in the years following the Tunguska event. By comparing these results with results for other aerosols generally found in the ice, the lack of excess NO3(-) following the Tunguska event can be interpreted as indicating that the impactor nitrate production calculated by Park (1978) and Turco et al. (1981, 1982) are 1-2 orders of magnitude too high. To explain this, it is suggested, from other lines of reasoning, that the impactor density determined by Petrov and Stulov (1975) probably is too low.

A mathematical simulation model of the CH-47B helicopter, volume 1

A nonlinear simulation model of the CH-47B helicopter was adapted for use in the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) simulation facility. The model represents the specific configuration of the ARC variable stability CH-47B helicopter and will be used in ground simulation research and to expedite and verify flight experiment design. Modeling of the helicopter uses a total force approach in six rigid body degrees of freedom. Rotor dynamics are simulated using the Wheatlely-Bailey equations including steady-state flapping dynamics. Also included in the model is the option for simulation of external suspension, slung-load equations of motion.

Estimating ocean production from satellite-derived chlorophyll - Insights from the EASTROPAC data set

The EASTROPAC expedition took place in 1967-68 in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Primary production was related to near-surface chlorophyll in these data. Much of the variability in the relation was due to the light-history of the phytoplankton and its photoadaptive state. This was due to changes in the depth of mixing of the surface waters more than changes in insolation. Accurate estimates of production from satellite chlorophyll measurements may require knowledge of the temporal and spatial variation in mixing of this region.

N(+)-N long-range interaction energies and resonance charge exchange

The aerothermodynamic studies of proposed space missions require atmospheric charge-transfer data. N2(+) eigenstate energies are calculated with use of the complete-active-space self-consistent-field method with an extended Gaussian basis set. The N(+)-N charge-exchange cross section, determined from these energies, agrees with merged-beam measurements. This contradicts the previous theoretical conclusion. A simple physical description of the long-range interaction is presented and should expedite future charge-transfer studies.

Space - The long-range future

The Space Shuttle/Space Transportation System (STS) provides the basis for future development toward permanent manned Space Stations, manned access to geostationary orbit (GEO), deployment of large space structures, development of closed-cycle life support systems, and the discovery of greater industrial applications in space. Research must continue in order to make an Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) which would provide manned flights to GEO and the establishment of a lunar base a reality by the year 2000. Beyond the year 2000 there should be advanced complexes in low-earth orbit (LEO), permanently manned scientific and communication stations in GEO, a permanent moon base, manned expeditions to Mars, and a geosynchronous facility. These goals can be achieved through international cooperation; cooperative programs will allow for more research at a faster pace due to joint funding. These advances could lead to improvements in the quality of life on earth and make comfortable space life a reality.
