BMS symmetry via AdS/CFT

With a view to understanding extended-BMS symmetries in the framework of the AdS 4 /CFT 3 correspondence, asymptotically AdS geometries are constructed with null impulsive shockwaves involving a discontinuity in superrotation parameters. The holographic dual is proposed to be a two-dimensional Euclidean defect conformal field localized on a particular timeslice in a three-dimensional conformal field theory on de Sitter spacetime. The defect conformal field theory generates a natural action of the Virasoro algebra. The large radius of curvature limit ℓ → ∞ yields spacetimes with nontrivial extended-BMS charges corresponding to a single set of Virasoro charges.

Relativistic spin dynamics for vector mesons

We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element ρ 00 for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate ρ 00 for ϕ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and spacetime variables. We argue that the main contribution to ρ 00 at lower energies should be from the ϕ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the ϕ meson wave function between the ϕ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to ρ 00 are all in squares of fields that are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in spacetime. The fluctuation of strong force fields can be extracted from ρ 00 of unflavored vector mesons as links to fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics. Magnetic Measurements and Alignment Results of LQXFA/B Cold Mass Assemblies at Fermilab

MQXFA production series quadrupole magnets are being built for the Hi-Lumi (HL) LHC upgrade by the U.S. Accelerator Upgrade Project (US-HL-LHC AUP). These magnets are being placed in pairs, as a cold mass, within cryostats at Fermilab, and are being tested to assess alignment and magnetic performance at Fermilab's horizontal test stand facility. The ~10 m - long assembly must meet stringent specifications for quadrupole strength and harmonic field integrals determination, magnetic axis position, and for magnet variations in positioning and local field profile. Here this paper describes the results of the magnetic and alignment measurements which characterize the first LQXFA/B assembly.

QCD beyond diagrams

Quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of the strong interactions, involves quarks interacting with non-Abelian gluon fields. This theory has many features that are difficult to impossible to see in conventional diagrammatic perturbation theory. This includes quark confinement, mass generation and chiral symmetry breaking. This paper is a colloquium level overview of the framework for understanding how these effects come about.

Alignment of the straw tracking detectors for the Fermilab Muon $g − 2$ experiment and systematic studies for a muon electric dipole moment measurement

The Fermilab Muon $g-2$ experiment is currently preparing for its fourth data-taking period (Run-4). The experiment-wide effort on the analysis of Run-1 data is nearing completion, with the announcement of the first result expected in the coming months. The final goal of the experiment is to determine the muon magnetic anomaly to a precision of 140 ppb. This level of precision will provide indirect evidence of new physics, if the central value agrees with the previously-measured value of the magnetic anomaly. Essential in reducing the systematic uncertainty, through measurements of the muon beam profile, are the in-vacuum straw tracking detectors. A crucial prerequisite in obtaining accurate distributions of the beam profile is the internal alignment of the tracking detectors, which is described in this thesis. As a result of this position calibration, the tracking efficiency has increased by 3%, while the track quality increased by 4%. This thesis also discusses an additional measurement that will be made using the tracking detectors: a search for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon, through the direct detection of an oscillation in the average vertical angle of the electron from the muon decay. An observation of a muon EDM would be evidencemore » of new physics and would provide a new source of CP violation in the charged lepton sector. Essential in measuring the EDM are accurate and precise estimations of potential non-zero radial and longitudinal magnetic fields, which were estimated using the Run-1 data. In addition, a preliminary analysis using the Run-1 data was undertaken to estimate the available precision for the magnetic anomaly measurement using the tracking detectors.« less

Magnetic Helicity in a Chiral-Polar Magnet Ni 2 InSbO 6

The class of chiral-polar magnets has recently captured significant interest in scientific study due to their intriguing physical phenomena. Among all the chiral-polar magnets, Ni 2 InSbO 6 stands out because of its unique attributes, such as the emergence of the topological chiral soliton lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field perpendicular to the chiral-polar axis. However, the magnetic structure of Ni 2 InSbO 6 at zero field has not been well understood yet. This work presents an analysis including polarized optical microscopy and polarized neutron diffraction on a carefully chosen Ni 2 InSbO 6 crystal. Here, results confirm the predominance of a single chiral-polar domain within the crystal and indicate the likelihood of cycloidal magnetic ordering under zero magnetic field, alongside the observation of net magnetic helicity. The existence of both a dominant chiral-polar domain and a dominant cycloidal magnetic domain within Ni 2 InSbO 6 provides an excellent platform for further exploration of its unconventional physical attributes.

Conformal wave expansions for flat space amplitudes

The extended BMS algebra contains a conformal subgroup that acts on the celestial sphere as SO(1, 3). It is of interest to perform mode expansions of free fields in Minkowski spacetime that realize this symmetry in a simple way. In the present work we perform such a mode expansion for massive scalar fields using the unitary principal series representations of SO(1, 3) with a view to developing a holographic approach to gravity in asymptotically flat spacetime. These mode expansions are also of use in studying holography in three-dimensional de Sitter spacetime.

Model-dependence of minimal-twist OPEs in d > 2 holographic CFTs

Following recent work on heavy-light correlators in higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with a large central charge C T , we clarify the properties of stress tensor composite primary operators of minimal twist, [ T m ], using arguments in both CFT and gravity. We provide an efficient proof that the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^m\right]\right\rangle$, where ${\mathcal{O}}_L$ is any light primary operator, is independent of the purely gravitational action. Next, we consider corrections to this coupling due to additional interactions in AdS effective field theory and the corresponding dual CFT. When the CFT contains a non-zero three-point coupling $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle$, the three-point coupling $\left\langle {\mathcal{O}}_L{\mathcal{O}}_L\left[{T}^2\right]\right\rangle$ is modified at large C T if $\left\langle TT{\mathcal{O}}_L\right\rangle \sim \sqrt{C_T}$. This scaling is obeyed by the dilaton, by Kaluza-Klein modes of prototypical supergravity compactifications, and by scalars in stress tensor multiplets of supersymmetric CFTs. Quartic derivative interactions involving the graviton and the light probe field dual to ${\mathcal{O}}_L $ can also modify the minimal-twist couplings; these local interactions may be generated by integrating out a spin- ℓ ≥ 2 bulk field at tree level, or any spin ℓ at loop level. These results show how the minimal-twist OPE coefficients can depend on the higher-spin gap scale, even perturbatively.

Gluon field digitization via group space decimation for quantum computers

Efficient digitization is required for quantum simulations of gauge theories. Schemes based on discrete subgroups use fewer qubits at the cost of systematic errors. We systematize this approach by deriving a single plaquette action for approximating general continuous gauge groups through integrating out field fluctuations. This provides insight into the effectiveness of these approximations, and how they could be improved. We accompany the scheme by simulations of pure gauge over the largest discrete subgroup of SU(3) up to the third order.

Exploring the Dynamics of Transverse Inter-planar Coupling in the SC Section of the PIP-II Linac

This study investigates the crucial role that an accurate understanding of inter-planar coupling in the transverse plane plays in regulating charged particle dynamics in a high-intensity linear accelerator and minimizing foil/septum impacts during injection from the linac to a ring. We in-depth analyze the emergence and evolution of transverse inter-planar coupling through multiple active lattice elements, taking into account space charge and field nonlinearities in the superconducting section of the PIP-II linac. The article compares various analytical, numerical, and experimental techniques for measuring transverse coupling using beam and lattice matrices and provides insight into effective strategies for its mitigation prior to ring injection.

Bi-Filar Coil Winding for Fast Quench Protection

As superconducting magnet technology is pushed towards higher performance, energy density and total stored energy follow exponentially. Protecting magnets becomes substantially more challenging with traditional methods being stretched to their limits. New technologies such as CLIQ promise to provide a robust method to protect advanced magnets, however they become inductance limited in large magnet strings or at low field, leading to more complex configurations. A technique to substantially reduce this limitation and improve response time is presented, by winding a coil in a bifilar fashion. This allows for extremely high di/dt. The concept is then demonstrated on a small REBCO coil.

Why Do Nuclei Stick Together?

Although quantum chromodynamics (QCD) has long been accepted as the underlying theory of the strong nuclear force, connecting the structure and interactions of nuclei to the fundamental parameters of QCD remains challenging. In this talk, I will present new results from lattice QCD and effective field theory that explore how nuclear interactions look in a world where the quarks are much heavier than they are in nature, and discuss lessons that can be learned for nuclear physics as well as searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.

A Rényi quantum null energy condition: proof for free field theories

The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally. It can equivalently be phrased as a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of the relative entropy S rel (ρ||σ) of an arbitrary state ρ with respect to the vacuum σ. The relative entropy has a natural one-parameter family generalization, the Sandwiched Rényi divergence S n (ρ||σ), which also measures the distinguishability of two states for arbitrary n ∈ [1/2, ∞). A Rényi QNEC, a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of S n (ρ||σ), was conjectured in previous work. In this work, we study the Rényi QNEC for free and superrenormalizable field theories in spacetime dimension d > 2 using the technique of null quantization. In the above setting, we prove the Rényi QNEC in the case n > 1 for arbitrary states. We also provide counterexamples to the Rényi QNEC for n < 1.

Interacting fractons in 2+1-dimensional quantum field theory

We analyze, in perturbation theory, a theory of weakly interacting fractons and non-relativistic fermions in a 2+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theory. In particular we compute the 1-loop corrections to the self energies and interaction vertex, and calculate the associated 1-loop Renormalization Group flows of the coupling constants. Surprisingly, we find that the fracton-fermion coupling does not flow due to an emergent coordinate-dependent symmetry of the effective Lagrangian, making this model a well-defined quantum field theory. We provide additional discussions on the regularization and renormalization of interacting fractonic theories, as well as both qualitative and quantitative remarks regarding the theory at finite temperature and finite chemical potential.

Analyticity of replica correlators and modular ETH

We study the two point correlation function of a local operator on an n -sheeted replica manifold corresponding to the half-space in the vacuum state of a conformal field theory. In analogy with the inverse Laplace transform, we define the Renyi transform of this correlation function, which is a function of one complex variable w, dual to the Renyi parameter n . Inspired by the inversion formula of Caron-Huot, we argue that if the Renyi transform ƒ(w) has bounded behavior at infinity in the complex w plane, the discontinuity of the Renyi transform disc ƒ(w) provides the unique analytic continuation in n of the original replica correlation function. We check our formula by explicitly calculating the Renyi transform of a particular replica correlator in a large N holographic CFT d in dimensions d > 2. We also discover that the discontinuity of the Renyi transform is related to the matrix element of local operators between two distinct eigenstates of the modular Hamiltonian. We calculate the Renyi transform in 2 d conformal field theories, and use it to extract the off-diagonal elements of (modular) ETH. We argue that in 2 d , this is equivalent to the off-diagonal OPE coefficients of a CFT and show that our technique exactly reproduces recent results in the literature.

Field control of quasiparticle decay in a quantum antiferromagnet

Dynamics in a quantum material is described by quantized collective motion: a quasiparticle. The single-quasiparticle description is useful for a basic understanding of the system, whereas a phenomenon beyond the simple description such as quasiparticle decay which affects the current carried by the quasiparticle is an intriguing topic. The instability of the quasiparticle is phenomenologically determined by the magnitude of the repulsive interaction between a single quasiparticle and the two-quasiparticle continuum. Although the phenomenon has been studied in several materials, thermodynamic tuning of the quasiparticle decay in a single material has not yet been investigated. Here we show, by using neutron scattering, magnetic field control of the magnon decay in a quantum antiferromagnet RbFeCl 3 , where the interaction between the magnon and continuum is tuned by the field. At low fields where the interaction is small, the single magnon decay process is observed. In contrast, at high fields where the interaction exceeds a critical magnitude, the magnon is pushed downwards in energy and its lifetime increases. Our study demonstrates that field control of quasiparticle decay is possible in the system where the two-quasiparticle continuum covers wide momentum-energy space, and the phenomenon of the magnon avoiding decay is ubiquitous.

Experimental studies of a high-gradient X-band welded hard-copper split accelerating structure

We report on recent research on high-gradient radio frequency (RF) accelerating structures indicates that the use of hard copper alloys provides improvement in high gradient performance over annealed copper. Such structures are made by bonding individually manufactured parts. However, there are no well-established bonding techniques that preserve the hardness, surface finish and cleanliness required for high gradient operation. To preserve the copper hardness, RadiaBeam has developed a novel high-gradient split accelerating structure, based on electron beam welding joining technique. This technique provides efficient bonding with strong, clean welds and minimal thermal loading, while maintaining a clean inner RF environment. Our RF design and fabrication methodology limits the small heat affected zone to the outer cavity envelop, with virtually no distortions or thermal loading of critical RF surfaces. It also incorporates provisions to precisely control the gap despite conventional issues with weld joint shrinkage. To date we have manufactured and validated an RF accelerating structure joined by electron-beam welding that incorporates a novel open split design to significantly reduce the assembly complexity and cost. In this paper, we will present the electromagnetic design of this structure, discuss bonding, and present the results of high-power tests, where the accelerating gradients of 140 MV m -1 with surface peak fields of 400 MV m -1 were achieved for flat-top pulse length of 600 ns with an RF breakdown rate of 10 -4 1/(pulsecm).
