Advanced Laboratory and Field Arrays: Evaluating Sampling Techniques for MHK Biological Monitoring (Task 6)

The overall goal of the task was to identify cost effective biological sampling techniques for MHK environmental monitoring. Protected, demersal, and pelagic fish and selected nektonic invertebrates were surveyed using capture and remote sensing techniques at the PacWave sites. The performance of capture and remote sensing monitoring techniques were evaluated and generic nekton monitoring indices were developed for MHK technologies and sites. In parallel to data collections at the PacWave site, the ability of regression models to characterize, detect, and predict change in acoustic data was evaluated using acoustic data collected in Admiralty Inlet, WA, during a biological monitoring study of the proposed SnoPud tidal turbine project site. Expected outcomes of these efforts included an evaluation of instrumentation and techniques used to monitor biological variability; identification of data streams that can be used to detect and quantify change; and sampling requirements to ensure detection of change in monitored variables.

A framework to collect human reliability analysis data for nuclear power plants using a simplified simulator and student operators

Data scarcity in human reliability analysis (HRA) has been a major challenge in the quantification process. Many institutes have collected HRA data through experiments using full-scope simulators with actual operators. Nevertheless, there are still some limitations to relying solely on full-scope studies. This paper aims to propose how full-scope data collection studies can be supported through the Simplified Human Error Experimental Program (SHEEP). The SHEEP framework was developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to collect HRA data through a simplified simulator and student operators. This paper introduces the major tasks in the SHEEP framework, with a particular focus on differences that arise due to participant type (i.e., student vs. actual operator), based on experiments using a simplified simulator (i.e., the Rancor Microworld). This paper also describes whether the data collected via this approach could support a representative full-scope data collection study (i.e., the HuREX study) based on the experimental data.

greg(g)d - Global runtime for eBPF-enabled gathering (w/ gumption) daemon Recently the linux kernel has added support for low-level kernel monitoring and profiling through a in-kernel virtual machine. The tooling around these new features (the extended Berkley Packet Filter or eBPF for short) is not mature and is difficult to use. Benefits from eBPF are especially hard to realize while trying to do large scale deployments and integrate with existing metric analysis stacks. A tool was needed to enable loading and collecting data from eBPF programs on large scale HPC systems. Given the problems above it was obvious we needed some wrapper program to compile, load, and collect data from eBPF programs running in the kernel. This tool needed to be lightweight without a heavy set of dependencies, relatively stable between different kernel versions, and integrate nicely with existing widely used metric collection tools. We wrote a program that wraps the eBPF tooling and sends data to our metric gathering tool. eBPF programs are either compiled using the host compiler stack, or loaded in the kernel directly from an object file. These programs are then attached to the system calls that we want to profile. Whenever these system calls are run, the eBPF program collects information of interest and writes that to memory. Our wrapper program polls these memory locations, reads and formats the data, then sends the information to a local unix socket. Our other monitoring tools are configured to read from that socket and send it to the rest of our metric monitoring stack for analysis.

Direct Feed High-Level Waste APPS Model Glass Testing (DFHLW APPS) Matrix, Phase 2

This report summarizes the data collected during the batching and melting of a second matrix of Direct Feed High-Level Waste (DFHLW) glasses generated using the preliminary enhanced waste glass models (EWG2.5) and the Britton and Anderson (2024) preliminary DFHLW feed vector. The purpose of these glasses is two-fold: 1. Validate EWG2.5 glass calculations being used in the Aspen Process Performance Simulation (APPS) model. 2. Evaluate and ultimately improve the glass property models and formulation methods used for design of DFHLW glasses as part of an iterative process of data collection and model refinement. Some of the 16 APPS2 glasses tested did not satisfy all target property constraints due to the limited data on DFHLW glass supporting the EWG2.5 models. • One glass, APPS2-10, formed nepheline on canister centerline cooling (CCC) heat-treatment and failed the product consistency test (PCT) response limits. This glass also had high B and Cr release rates for the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). All other glasses were found to satisfy the PCT and TCLP constraints for both quenched and CCC samples. • One glass, APPS2-08, had higher than acceptable viscosity due to magnetite crystallization. • One glass, APPS2-09, formed greater than 2 vol% crystals at 950 °C. As the glass design criterion was that the temperature at 2 vol% crystal (T 2% ) be less than 950 °C, only one glass failed the criteria. However, this criterion is being reevaluated. Four additional glasses formed crystal fractions between 1 and 2 vol% at 950 °C (APPS2-03, -08, -12, and -14). • Four glasses – APPS2-01, -02, -04, and -16 – failed the Monofrax K-3 refractory neck corrosion (k neck ) design limit of 0.04 in. at 1208 °C for 6 d. This is another criterion being reevaluated. Four additional glasses (APPS2-05, -06, -11, and -13) exhibited 0.025 = k neck = 0.04 in. • All 16 glasses passed the sulfur solubility and TCLP constraints. The measured property values were compared to predicted values using EWG2.5 and a selection of other existing models. A few models (e.g., electrical conductivity, TCLP) were found to be adequate for designing DFHLW glasses in the near future, while others require refits or offsets. It is recommended that new property models be developed for EWG3.0, as a large amount of DFHLW glass property data (> 14 × existing data) is expected to be collected in the compositional spaces where no data was previously available. To enable near-term calculations and formulations for designing DFHLW glasses and processing rate estimations, a formulation algorithm with minor modifications will be developed, EWG2.6.

M-3 Focused Experiments is a group at Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) and is under the Dynamic Experiments Division. Their work surrounds the diagnostics and study of explosives and their interaction with materials. The data collected is used to better understand the erratic nature of explosions and high velocity projectiles. Through better comprehension of this science, the overall national security will be improved while innovations are made along the way. Despite the strong drive for research and development, the lab holds safety above all else and constantly updates procedures to protect LANL employees and their environment. At any time, there are multiple projects going on at once within the team and I am tasked with assisting the Firing Site Leaders and various research diagnosticians in any way possible with the setup, testing, and execution of data collection for each experiment. Such data includes velocity, fragmentation characteristics, and the spread of energy across the material to name a few. During my summer employment with the lab, my main goal is to maintain a questioning attitude and learn as much possible about the research and development side of science and engineering. Throughout the duration of the Co-op, many experiments will take place at specially designed firing sites which is where I will be spending most of my time.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of Meteorological Time Series Data for Billy Barr, East River, Colorado USA

A comprehensive Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) statistical framework consists of three major phases: Phase 1—Preliminary raw data sets exploration, including time formatting and combining datasets of different lengths and different time intervals; Phase 2—QA of the datasets, including detecting and flagging of duplicates, outliers, and extreme values; and Phase 3—the development of time series of a desired frequency, imputation of missing values, visualization and a final statistical summary. The time series data collected at the Billy Barr meteorological station (East River Watershed, Colorado) were analyzed. The developed statistical framework is suitable for both real-time and post-data-collection QA/QC analysis of meteorological datasets. The files that are in this data package include one excel file, converted to CSV format (Billy_Barr_raw_qaqc.csv) that contains the raw meteorological data, i.e., input data used for the QA/QC analysis. The second CSV file (Billy_Barr_1hr.csv) is the QA/QC and flagged meteorological data, i.e., output data from the QA/QC analysis. The last file (QAQC_Billy_Barr_2021-03-22.R) is a script written in R that implements the QA/QC and flagging process. The purpose of the CSV data files included in this package is to provide input and output files implemented in the R script.
