Ab initio approaches to high-entropy alloys: a comparison of CPA, SQS, and supercell methods

In this work, we present a comparative study of different modeling approaches to the electronic properties of the Hf 0.05 Nb 0.05 Ta 0.8 Ti 0.05 Zr 0.05 high-entropy alloy. Common to our modeling is the methodology to compute the one-particle Green’s function in the framework of density functional theory. We demonstrate that the special quasi-random structures modeling and the supercell, i.e., the locally self-consistent multiple-scattering methods, provide very similar results for the ground state properties such as the spectral function (density of states) and the equilibrium lattice parameter. To reconcile the multiple-scattering single-site coherent potential approximation with the real space supercell methods, we included the effect of screening of the net charges of the alloy components. Based on the analysis of the total energy and spectral functions computed within the density functional theory, we found no signature for the long-range or local magnetic moments formation in the Hf 0.05 Nb 0.05 Ta 0.8 Ti 0.05 Zr 0.05 high-entropy alloy; instead, we find possible superconductivity below ~9K.

Synthesis and characteristics of porous ceramic tubes: a comparison of centrifugal casting and cold isostatic pressing methods

Short porous ceramic tubes in small quantities are needed for membrane-related research and development efforts and can be synthesized by centrifugal casting (CC) or cold isostatic pressing (CIP) methods. Here, this work evaluates the characteristics of porous ceramic tubes prepared by both methods and provides a strategy for selecting the proper method for ceramic tube fabrication, depending on its application. Samarium-doped ceria (SDC) with an average crystallite size of 10 nm was synthesized by a citrate method and used to make porous SDC tubes by the CC and CIP methods under different conditions. Porous SDC tubes were prepared from an aqueous suspension of the SDC powder with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using a cylindrical metallic mold, centrifugated at 4000–6000 rpm, followed by sintering in 1200–1500 °C. SDC tubes were also made by the CIP method from the SDC powder placed inside a cylindrical rubber bag followed by isostatic compression at 1379 bar. The pore structure of the SDC tubes was characterized by helium permeation and liquid nitrogen Archimedes method. Due to high compression pressure giving a low porosity green tube, the CIP method with lower sintering temperature produces SDC tubes with much lower porosity and average pore size and similar tortuosity compared to the CC methods. The CIP method should be used to prepare low porosity or dense ceramic tubes, and the CC method should be used for preparing high-porosity ceramic tubes or tubes with pore gradient tube wall.

ELM Suppression by Boron Powder Injection and Comparison with Lithium Powder Injection on EAST

Type I edge-localized modes (ELMs) in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) were completely suppressed via boron powder injection into the X-point region of an upper-single null configuration over a wide range of operating conditions (2.8 < P aux < 7.5 MW, 3.8 × 10 19 < n e < 6 × 10 19 m -3 , RF-only and RF + NBI heating scenarios, both grad-B drift directions, and even He ion majority plasmas) (Sun et al. in Nucl. Fusion, 2020). A window of edge B concentration for stable long pulse operation was identified: too low and ELMs return, too high and the discharge suffers radiative collapse. The injection of boron powder above the minimum for ELM suppression coincided with the occurrence of an edge harmonic oscillation detected in magnetics (both on the high-field side and low-field side), in AXUV diodes near the upper X-point, divertor Dα emission, and in a range of other diagnostics (Diallo et al. in: Proceedings of 2020 IAEA fusion energy conference, 2021). Furthermore, no harmonic oscillation was observed when ELMs were present, and stored energy was slightly increased at constant density during ELM suppression. Core tungsten emission during ELM suppression either increased or decreased relative to ELMy H-mode, but the W emission was maintained at acceptable levels. The threshold B injection rate was measured for several conditions, and found to increase with heating power. Li powder injection into comparable discharges also resulted in a short phase of ELM suppression, but density and stored energy both decreased due to the strong pumping effect of lithium; no edge harmonic oscillation was observed with Li injection, indicating that the ELM suppression mechanisms differ. The new set of B-seeded, ELM-suppressed discharges exhibited certain characteristics of quiescent H-mode (Burrell et al. in Phys Plasmas 8:2153, 2001), but did not require high shear, counter beams, etc. The wide operating window and compatibility with RF-only discharges paves the way for future experiments targeting long pulse H-mode discharges with complete ELM suppression.

Irradiation Tests of Superconducting Detectors and Comparison with Simulations

For the future satellite mission at the second sun–earth Lagrangian point (L2), we need to mitigate phonon propagation created by cosmic rays to superconducting detectors. We simulate phonon propagation in silicon substrate and show that putting a metal layer on the substrate or making hole in the substrate reduces the propagation. We also show a function which shows the response of a TES bolometer on a substrate. To validate these theoretical expectations, we make irradiation tests using two types of superconducting detectors: transition edge sensor bolometers and kinetic inductance detectors. From the tests, we show that putting metal can reduce correlations between detectors and number of hit events from charged particles.

Comparison Between the f-Electron and Conduction-Electron Density of States in the Falicov-Kimball Model at Low Temperature

The spinless Falicov-Kimball model is one of the simplest models of many-body physics. While the conduction-electron density of states is temperature independent in the normal state, the f -electron density of states is strongly temperature dependent—it has an orthogonality catastrophe singularity in the metallic phase and is gapped in the insulating phase. The question we address here is whether the spectral gap is the same for both electron species as T → 0. Finally, we find strong evidence to indicate that the answer is affirmative.

A Solubility Comparison of Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) and Potential Mock-HMX Candidates in Solvents Relevant to Slurry Formulating Polymer-Bonded Materials

Understanding solubility behavior of organic crystalline materials is critical in the development of slurry-formulated plastic bonded composites. In the field of high explosives (HE), a common method for obtaining high density, greater than 95 % theoretical maximum density, is to encapsulate HE in a polymer matrix resulting in the formation of plastic bonded explosive (PBX) prills. Prill formation is highly nuanced and requires understanding of particle size distributions, solvent, antisolvent, and binder system as well as interactions thereof. In this paper, in an effort to create mock-HE that mimics HE in density and mechanical strength, solubility of candidate molecules was compared to cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) in binder solvents relevant to prill formation. The results indicate that the mock candidates chosen for this study have different solubilities compared to HMX in water and both organic solvents, 2-butanone and ethyl acetate, investigated. With these solubility differences known, prills to match PBXs based on HMX can be formulated, pressed and tested.

Comparison of model predictions with measured proton-induced production of nickel and iridium isotopes

Calculations were performed to support method development for simultaneous production of Ni and Ir isotopes. Here, the work scope included development of the physical target, irradiation configuration, and post-irradiation radiochemical separations. The assumptions of predictive models previously developed were refined based upon the precise experimental configuration selected, including Os target material and a set of stacked targets for concurrent production of Ni and Ir isotopes. Model predictions of the reaction cross sections with EMPIRE 3.21 and implied isotopic yields are compared with proton beam irradiation measurements to refine model parameters and guide future experiments.

Comparison of microprecipitation methods for polonium source preparation for alpha spectrometry

Detection of radioactive isotopes of polonium is important for understanding natural processes, management and assessment of radioactive waste, and nuclear forensics applications. Further, the most common methods for preparation of polonium samples for alpha spectrometry are electrodeposition and spontaneous deposition which are time consuming. Here, we compare three approaches utilizing rapid microprecipitation from bismuth phosphate, copper sulfide, or tellurium alongside traditional spontaneous deposition methods. From these experiments, results show that copper sulfide microprecipitation recoveries are similar to spontaneous deposition on silver and less time consuming with an approximate five-fold decrease in preparation time, including in the presence of complex matrices like seawater.

A comparison of long-term 37 Ar and 39 Ar transport and implications for 39 Ar as a persistent indicator of underground nuclear explosions

Measurements were first made in 2016 of legacy 39 Ar gas from the decades-old Barnwell underground nuclear explosion site within the Nevada National Security Site. This has raised the question of the ubiquity of the radionuclide 39 Ar following underground nuclear explosions in general locations. This article presents a high-level evaluation of the scientific case for using 39 Ar as a long-term indicator of underground nuclear explosions. Assessment is made based on a broad set of assumptions to reasonably estimate the persistence of 39 Ar in the subsurface environment following an explosion to establish potential detectability years to decades after the originating event.

Plug-in electric vehicles in China and the USA: a technology and market comparison

As the top two plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) markets in the world, China and the United States of America (USA) have developed different market structures that are influenced by government policies, test procedures, customer acceptance, and vehicle performance. There are differences in PEV test procedures and vehicle class definitions as well. This paper quantifies such differences and compares PEV characteristics and markets in the two countries using actual data collected over several years. First, although China surpasses the USA in annual PEV production because of generous PEV policies and higher charging infrastructure availability, the USA has a higher PEV adoption rate per capita (2.3 versus 0.81 per 1000 people at the end of 2017). Second, the most popular vehicle classes are A00 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in China but long-range mid-size BEVs in the USA. Moreover, China's electric and plug-in hybrid sport utility vehicle market is growing quickly. Third, the electricity consumption rated under Chinese test procedures is 20%-40% lower than that rated under US procedures. The sales-weighted electricity consumption of an average BEV in China is 23% lower than that in the USA because of larger proportions of small and micro BEVs in China. Fourth, PEV battery cost in the two countries is currently close to $210-$220 kWh. Finally, China has higher numbers of charging infrastructure, and the ratio of PEVs to public chargers is 9.0 in China versus 17.9 in the USA at the end of 2018.

Comparison of PsbQ and Psb27 in photosystem II provides insight into their roles

Photosystem II (PSII) catalyzes the oxidation of water at its active site that harbors a high-valent inorganic Mn 4 CaO x cluster called the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). Extrinsic subunits generally serve to protect the OEC from reductants and stabilize the structure, but diversity in the extrinsic subunits exists between phototrophs. Recent cryo-electron microscopy experiments have provided new molecular structures of PSII with varied extrinsic subunits. We focus on the extrinsic subunit PsbQ, that binds to the mature PSII complex, and on Psb27, an extrinsic subunit involved in PSII biogenesis. PsbQ and Psb27 share a similar binding site and have a four-helix bundle tertiary structure, suggesting they are related. Here, we use sequence alignments, structural analyses, and binding simulations to compare PsbQ and Psb27 from different organisms. We find no evidence that PsbQ and Psb27 are related despite their similar structures and binding sites. Evolutionary divergence within PsbQ homologs from different lineages is high, probably due to their interactions with other extrinsic subunits that themselves exhibit vast diversity between lineages. This may result in functional variation as exemplified by large differences in their calculated binding energies. Psb27 homologs generally exhibit less divergence, which may be due to stronger evolutionary selection for certain residues that maintain its function during PSII biogenesis which is consistent with their more similar calculated binding energies between organisms. Previous experimental inconsistencies, low confidence binding simulations, and recent structural data suggest that Psb27 is likely to exhibit flexibility that may be an important characteristic of its activity. Furthermore, the analysis provides insight into the functions and evolution of PsbQ and Psb27, and an unusual example of proteins with similar tertiary structures and binding sites that probably serve different roles.

Structural comparison of allophycocyanin variants reveals the molecular basis for their spectral differences

Abstract Allophycocyanins are phycobiliproteins that absorb red light and transfer the energy to the reaction centers of oxygenic photosynthesis in cyanobacteria and red algae. Recently, it was shown that some allophycocyanins absorb far-red light and that one subset of these allophycocyanins, comprising subunits from the ApcD4 and ApcB3 subfamilies (FRL-AP), form helical nanotubes. The lowest energy absorbance maximum of the oligomeric ApcD4-ApcB3 complexes occurs at 709 nm, which is unlike allophycocyanin (AP; ApcA-ApcB) and allophycocyanin B (AP-B; ApcD-ApcB) trimers that absorb maximally at ~ 650 nm and ~ 670 nm, respectively. The molecular bases of the different spectra of AP variants are presently unclear. To address this, we structurally compared FRL-AP with AP and AP-B, performed spectroscopic analyses on FRL-AP, and leveraged computational approaches. We show that among AP variants, the α-subunit constrains pyrrole ring A of its phycocyanobilin chromophore to different extents, and the coplanarity of ring A with rings B and C sets a baseline for the absorbance maximum of the chromophore. Upon oligomerization, the α-chromophores of all AP variants exhibit a red shift of the absorbance maximum of ~ 25 to 30 nm and band narrowing. We exclude excitonic coupling in FRL-AP as the basis for this red shift and extend the results to discuss AP and AP-B. Instead, we attribute these spectral changes to a conformational alteration of pyrrole ring D, which becomes more coplanar with rings B and C upon oligomerization. This study expands the molecular understanding of light-harvesting attributes of phycobiliproteins and will aid in designing phycobiliproteins for biotechnological applications.

Comparison of mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation with mono- and mixed Lemna minor and Spirodela polyrhiza cultures

Mercury (Hg) is a prevalent and harmful contaminant that persists in the environment. For phytoremediation, it is important to discover which plants can bioaccumulate meaningful amounts of Hg while also tolerating its toxicity. Additionally, increasing biodiversity could create a more resilient and self-sustaining system for remediation. This study explores whether mixed populations of Lemna minor and Spirodela polyrhiza can better bioaccumulate and tolerate Hg than monocultures. Mono- and mixed cultures of L. minor and S. polyrhiza were grown in mesocosms of 0.5 μg/L or 100 μg/L Hg ( HgCl2) spiked water for 96 h. Change in weight of duckweed was used to assess Hg tolerance. Diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGTs) were used as surrogate monitoring devices for bioavailable levels of Hg. For biomass growth, the mixed culture of the L. minor was greater than the monoculture at the high dose. The L. minor accumulated more Hg in the mixed culture at the low dose while the S. polyrhiza was higher in the mixed at the high dose. Hg speciation in water was modeled using Windermere Humic Aqueous Model 7 (WHAM7) to compare the bioavailable species indicated by the DGTs. Potentially due to the controlled conditions, the WHAM7 output of bioavailable Hg was almost 1:1 to that estimated by the DGTs, indicating good predictive capability of geochemical modeling and passive sampler DGT on metal bioavailability. Altogether, the mixed cultures statistically performed as well as or better than the monocultures when tolerating and bioaccumulating Hg. However, there needs to be further work to see if the significant differences translate into practical differences worth the extra resources to maintain multiple species.

Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Refractory Multi-principal Element Alloys: An Experimental and Modeling Comparison

Here, the search for structural alloys capable of ultrahigh temperature performance has led to the exploration of refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs). In this work, experimental results for solidification segregation and homogenization of two RMPEAs, NbTaTiW and MoNbTaTi, are compared to simulations using the Scheil and DICTRA modules in Thermo-Calc®. Scheil calculations accurately predict the observed solidification segregation, while DICTRA predicts general trends and can provide a minimum time to achieve homogenization at a given temperature.

Stimulating β -Series Precipitation in Mg–Nd Alloys Via Microalloying: A Comparison of Electron Microscopy and Small-Angle Scattering Techniques

The Mg–Nd alloy system is of particular interest in the development of high-strength, lightweight structural alloys due to the formation of strengthening metastable Mg–Nd β-series precipitates during heat treatment. The strengthening is primarily provided by a combination of the β''' and β 1 precipitation. It is therefore important to understand how the precipitation behavior can be enhanced by other common alloying elements. In this work, the effects of 0.2 wt pct Zn and Ca on β-series precipitation were studied. Small-angle/ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/USAXS) techniques in combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) were used to study the evolution of precipitation microstructure. Here, it is found that the Zn additions refine the precipitates, leading to an increase in hardness with aging at 200 °C. On the other hand, the Ca additions result in an acceleration in the formation of larger β 1 precipitates and chains which provides less strengthening. The β 1 chains are surrounded by precipitate-free zones (PFZs) that further contribute to the decreases in hardness observed in the over-aged condition. This paper demonstrated that SAXS/USAXS provides a powerful tool for an in situ study of the early stages of precipitation in the Mg–Nd-based alloys.
