The growing demand for Nd2Fe14B magnets is exacerbating the current critical materials shortage. To reduce the amount of critical material in Nd2Fe14B magnets, chemical substitutions have been used and shown to improve the magnetic behavior, such as the Curie Temperature TC, anisotropy field Ha, and saturation magnetization MS.
The addition of spin-polarized, continuous-wave (c.w.) positron beams to the 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) would provide a significant capability to the experimental nuclear physics program at Jefferson Lab. Based on bremsstrahlung and pair-production in a high-Z target, the positron source requires a 120 MeV spin-polarized c.w. electron beam of several milliamperes. While the beam dynamics of the high-current electron beam are tenable, sustaining this current for weeks of user operations requires an unprecedented charge lifetime from a high-polarization GaAs-based photocathode. A promising approach to exceed the kilocoulomb charge lifetime barrier is reducing the ion back-bombardment fluence at the photocathode. By increasing the laser size and managing the emittance growth with an adequate cathode/anode design, significantly enhanced charge lifetime may be achieved. Based upon a new simulation model that qualitatively explains the lifetime data previously measured at different spot sizes, we describe the practical implications on the parameter space available for a kilocoulomb-lifetime polarized photogun design.
Jefferson Lab is proposing to add positron beams to the 12 GeV Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). A team of accelerator and nuclear scientists was formed in 2018 to develop the physics case as well as a concept for the generation, production and delivery of Continuous (CW) polarized positron beams to the experimental halls, up to the full 12 GeV. A layout of the proposed concept will be shown. We will report on the ongoing efforts in the positron generation and capture, target design, beam transport and expected properties of the e+ beam on the experimental targets at 12GeV. This project is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics under contract DE-AC05-06OR23177

Cast iron exhibits a wide range of mechanical properties, depending on its microstructural features. The microstructure of cast iron consists of several microconstituents with different elastic-plastic behavior, making the strain non-uniform across the bulk material. To understand the individual effects of these microconstituents on the overall mechanical behavior, local strain analysis using digital image correlation analysis was carried out. Samples with two different compositions (varying cerium, magnesium and silicon) were processed at different solidification velocities in a Bridgman furnace. Sections of the directionally solidified samples were loaded under uniaxial compression to measure global and local strain behavior. Despite the variability of the microstructure, the stress–strain curves obtained by digital image correlation (DIC) were found to react in a well-controlled way to changes in solidification velocity. It was observed that high-strain failure (greater than 15%) was accompanied by local straining of the softer ferritic phase, but during low-strain failure, local straining was not prominent. Higher nodularities, due to higher solidification velocities, raised the compressive strength without affecting the toughness significantly. Higher percentages of carbides led to higher compressive strengths with corresponding losses in ductility. The continuity of the matrix was also found to play an important role in the behavior during compression.

The two-step metal oxide water-splitting cycle is one of the most viable approach for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen (STCH) production. Challenges exist in finding suitable oxides that can satisfy thermodynamics of the STCH redox cycle under viable range of temperatures and partial pressures. Recently, BXM family members, i.e., Ba4NbMn3O12 (BNM), Ba4CeMn3O12 (BCM), Ba4PrMn3O12 (BPM) are discovered to exhibit promising STCH performance. However, the magnetic degrees of freedom of their experimental crystal structures is not characterized, and only hypothetical models exist for their electronic structure. We performed Monte-Carlo sampling for the magnetic spin arrangement of Mn atoms to provide explicit atomic structure models for their ground state 12R polytype and determined the most stable spin configuration for each member after structure relaxation using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We also elucidate the most stable charge configuration (Mn3+/Mn4+ arrangement) for BNM among the existing hypothesis in literature. We investigate these strongly correlated oxides using different levels of theory (DFT+U, Hybrid-DFT) to develop better understanding of their electronic structure. These calculations allowed us to develop a model based on molecular orbital interactions that help explain the observed changes in their experimental x-ray spectroscopy measurements. Thereby, help link differences in electronic structure of BXM family members to their varying water-splitting behavior. These structure models will further facilitate future in-depth defect studies to model STCH redox cycle of these oxides.

A method for fabricating a composite useful in a white light emitting device, includes mixing a phosphor and a filler to form a mixture; sintering the mixture (e.g., using spark plasma sintering) to form a composite; and annealing the composite to reduce oxygen vacancies and improve optical properties of the composite. Also disclosed is a white light emitting device including a laser diode or light emitting diode optically pumping the phosphor in the composite to produce white light. The composite fabricated using the method (and having. e.g., at most 50% phosphor by weight) can (1) reduce an operating temperature of the phosphor by 55 degrees, (2) increase an external quantum efficiency (e.g., by at least 15%) of the white light emitting device, and (3) result in color points and quality of the white light that is equal to or improved, as compared to without the filler.
