Calculations of atmospheric radiative flux profiles
Results are presented of experiments with a diagnostic approach to the radiation budget by using all available data sets to describe the properties of the atmosphere, clouds, and surface at each time and place, together with a radiative transfer model that calculates the radiative fluxes using this information. Each parameter in the calculations is represented explicitly, so that improved data sets can be easily substituted. The model and data are combined to calculate profiles of radiative fluxes, including individual flux components, heating/cooling rates, as well as top-of-atmosphere and surface radiation budget components. The advantage of this explicit approach is that all contributions to the radiation budget can be diagnosed separately; in particular, cloud-radiative feedbacks can be isolated from the effects of other atmospheric and surface changes.
