MOF-Transformed In 2 O 3-x @C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO 2 Reduction to HCOOH

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density (J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3-x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3-x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm –2 J HCOOH at a low potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm –2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3-x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Dual active site tandem catalysis of metal hydroxyl oxides and single atoms for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

We report the high voltage in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) often causes structural change in electrocatalysts and forms multiple active sites. Therefore, exploring the synergy of various active sites is extremely significant to develop catalysts for OER with multiple elementary steps. Herein, we adopt the physically adsorbed metal ions method to successfully synthesize a highly-efficient electrocatalyst containing the dual active sites of Fe-NiOOH and NiC4 single atoms (marked as Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH). The Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH displays outstanding OER performance with an overpotential of 269 mV to deliver current density of 10 mA/cm 2 that shows 55 mV superior to commercial IrO 2 /CB at the same condition. Experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that the excellent OER activity of Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH catalyst is attributed to the synergy of dual active sites of NiC 4 SAs and Fe-NiOOH. A tandem catalysis mechanism is also proposed to reveal the synergism of two active centers, which makes the potential-determining step more facile and accordingly decreases the OER overpotential. This work offers a new concept of tandem catalysis to develop the electrocatalysts with many elemental steps, like OER and oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

Regulated lithium ionic flux through well-aligned channels for lithium dendrite inhibition in solid-state batteries

The utilization of solid electrolyte (SE) to suppress lithium (Li) dendrites is promising but still far from satisfactory due to the inhomogeneous Li plating/stripping. In this paper, we demonstrated a novel strategy to inhibit Li dendrites via regulating Li-ion flux in SE by using vertically aligned channels. The ion-insulating walls facilitated uniform distribution of Li-ion flux through the channels, leading to a homogeneous Li deposition, thus alleviating Li dendrite formation. As a result, symmetric cells with this SE exhibited excellent long-term stability (1000 h) against Li metal. In addition, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO)/Li cell with the developed SE achieved good battery performance over 100 cycles. The mechanism for dendrite suppression was further investigated by phase-field simulation. This work provides a novel strategy by manipulating uniform Li-ion flux to fabricate SE to inhibit Li dendrites and facilitates the development of high-performance rechargeable Li batteries.

Oxygen vacancy-rich amorphous FeNi hydroxide nanoclusters as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Here, a one-pot strategy is presented to directly synthesize amorphous Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters (denoted as ANC-Fe x Ni y , <2 nm) with oxygen vacancies induced by ionic liquids. The ANC-Fe x Ni y catalyst presents abundant catalytic sites and high intrinsic conductivity. As such, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 exhibits high activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec –1 and an overpotential of 266 mV at 10 mA cm –2 . Notably, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 shows an extraordinarily large mass activity of 3028 A g FeNi –1 at the overpotential of 300 mV, which is ~24-fold of commercial RuO 2 catalyst. The superior activity of these Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters is ascribed to (i) the amorphous and distorted structure with abundant oxygen vacancies, and (ii) enhanced active site density by downsizing the ANC-Fe x Ni y clusters. This strategy provides a novel route for enhancing OER electrocatalytic performance and highly encouraging for the future application of amorphous metal hydroxides in catalysis.

Evolution of the Rate-Limiting step: From Thin Film to Thick Ni-rich Cathodes

Ni-rich NMC (LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2, x = 0.6) has the attributes of high specific capacity (greater than 180 mAh g-1), high operating voltage (ca. 3.8 V) and low cost, which is therefore deemed as one of the most promising cathode candidates for next-generation high-energy Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, challenges exist before the large-scale commercialization of Ni-rich cathode such as gas generation, capacity degradation especially at high rate or elevated temperatures. From thin film to densely pack high loading cathode, this work investigates the rate-limiting steps in Ni-rich cathodes e.g., phase structure, electronic and ionic conductivity to understand the reaction kinetics at different scales. This work provides new insights in understanding the electrochemical properties of Ni-rich cathode at different levels to inspire revolutionary ideas to address the fundamental issues of Ni-rich cathode from materials to relevant electrode levels.
