Reynolds number and cowl position effects for a generic sidewall compression scramjet inlet at Mach 10 - A computational and experimental investigation

Reynolds number and cowl position effects on the internal shock structure and the resulting performance of a generic three-dimensional sidewall compression scramjet inlet with a leading edge sweep of 45 degrees at Mach 10 have been examined both computationally and experimentally. Prior to the experiment, a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code was adapted to perform preliminary parametric studies leading to the design of the present configuration. Following this design phase, the code was then utilized as an analysis tool to provide a better understanding of the flow field and the experimental static pressure data for the final experimental configuration. The wind tunnel model possessed 240 static pressure orifices distributed on the forebody plane, sidewalls, and cowl and was tested in the NASA Langley 31 Inch Mach 10 Tunnel.

Adaptive low-bandwidth tracking of Galileo and Pioneer 10 carriers

In the Deep Space Network, tracking of residual carrier phase typically occurs with a fixed-bandwidth phase-locked loop using a bandwidth sufficiently wide to prevent loss of lock under worst-case conditions of signal dynamics, received signal phase noise, and receiver phase noise. Much of the time, however, such a high bandwidth is not required and may inflict unnecessarily heavy penalties on loop signal-to-noise ratios. This article describes a technique for improving tracking performance by permitting initial tracking at narrow bandwidths and gradually widening the loop as needed. The cost is a requirement for signal buffering, which is relatively inexpensive for low data rate applications. Results based on off-line processing of recorded carrier data from Galileo and Pioneer 10 are presented, and show potential 10-16 dB gains in loop SNR over worst-case fixed-bandwidth tracking.

LDEF polymeric materials: 10 months versus 5.8 years of exposure

The chemical characterization of several polymeric materials which received 10 months of exposure and 5.8 years of exposure on a Row 9 Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) experiment (A0134) is reported. Specimens include fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) teflon film, polysulfone film, and graphite fiber reinforced epoxy amd polysulfone matrix composites. The responses of these materials to the two LEO exposures are compared. The results of infrared, thermal, x-ray photoelectron, and scanning electron microscope analyses are reported. Solution property measurements of various molecular weight parameters are presented for the thermoplastic polysulfone materials. Molecular level effects attributable to exposure that were present in 10-month exposed specimens were not found in 5.8-year exposed specimens. This result suggests that increased atomic oxygen fluence toward the end of the LDEF mission may have eroded away selected environmentally induced changes in surface chemistry for 5.8-year exposure specimens.

A direct gravitational lensing test for 10 exp 6 solar masses black holes in halos of galaxies

We propose a method that will be able to detect or exclude the existence of 10 exp 6 solar masses black holes in the halos of galaxies. VLBA radio maps of two milliarcsecond jets of a gravitationally lensed quasar will show the signature of these black holes - if they exist. If there are no compact objects in this mass range along the line of sight, the two jets should be linear mappings of each other. If they are not, there must be compact objects of about 10 exp 6 solar masses in the halo of the galaxy that deform the images by gravitational deflection. We present numerical simulations for the two jets A and B of the double quasar 0957 + 561, but the method is valid for any gravitationally lensed quasar with structure on milliarcsecond scales. As a by-product from high-quality VLBA maps of jets A and B, one will be able to tell which features in the maps are intrinsic in the original jet and which are only an optical illusion, i.e., gravitational distortions by black holes along the line of sight.

Mariner 10 multispectral images of the eastern limb and farside of the moon

We present the first analysis of Mariner 10 multispectral image data for the eastern limb and farside of the moon. A new, rigorous calibration of these data is used that provides results that are consistent with independently derived data sets. From these newly calibrated data, a color ratio image (0.48/0.58 micron) is produced to show relative TiO2 abundances in mare units on the eastern limb and farside of the moon. Our results indicate that the farside lunar mare deposits examined have TiO2 contents that are intermediate to low (2.5 pct TiO2) relative to mare deposits on the nearside. We find no evidence for areally extensive deposits of either very low titanium or high to very high titanium basalts in these portions of the moon. Our findings support previous interpretations that the source regions for lunar mare basalts are laterally heterogeneous. Additionally, examination of highland units reveals a relatively blue region that corresponds with a previously proposed cryptomare, suggesting enhanced TiO2 for this unit. Finally, based on these Mariner 10 data, telescopic spectral data, Galileo multispectral image data, and lunar meteorite analyses we speculate that volcanism in farside mare deposits did not include high titanium basalts.

Pioneer 10 and 11 interstellar studies

The Pioneer 10 spacecraft may soon be the first man-made object to leave our solar system and penetrate the heliospheric boundary into interstellar space. Scientific investigators on this mission eagerly anticipate the opportunity to measure the physical processes occurring in the terminal boundary region and in the unexplored space known as the interstellar medium by astronomers who have studied it remotely with telescopes for many years. This paper is a descriptive overview of the Pioneer 10 mission and the dominant physical processes that have been discovered since its 1972 launch into our heliosphere and those processes that we expect to see at the boundary and in the interstellar medium.

A vacuum (10 exp -9 torr) friction apparatus for determining friction and endurance life of MoS(x) films

An ultrahigh-vacuum tribometer for use in a ball-on-disk configuration was specially designed for measuring the friction and endurance life of magnetron-sputtered solid lubricating MoS(x) films deposited on sputter-cleaned 400 C stainless-steel disks, when slid against a 6-mm-diameter 440 C stainless-steel ball. The results of tests showed that the tribometer performs satisfactorily in unidirectional rotation in vacuum at a pressure of 10 exp -7 Pa, 10 exp -9 torr. Similarities are observed in the life cycle friction behavior and the coefficient of friction as a function of the number of disk revolutions, for MoS(x) films at average Hertzian contact from 0.33 to 0.69 GPa.

The X-ray-emitting trail of the nearby pulsar PSR1929 + 10

The paper reports the detection by the Rosat satellite of a nebula associated with the nearby pulsar PSR1929 + 10, which is of a type different from the pulsar-wind nebulae produced by direct interaction of the relativistic wind from older pulsars with the interstellar medium (ISM) (Blandorf et al., 1973). The PSR1929 + 10 nebula appears as a linear diffuse X-ray feature in the direction opposite to the pulsar's proper motion, with the pulsar wind confined by the ram-pressure arising from the high velocity of the pulsar through the ISM. This results in a trail of relativistic electrons with enhanced emissions of synchrotron radiation.

Future operations of Pioneer 10 and 11

The Pioneers 10 and 11 spacecraft were launched on 2 March 1972 and 5 April 1973 and are now 53 and 35 AU from the sun. Pioneer 10 is now the most distant man-made object in our solar system and the in situ measurements of the gas and dust surrounding the sun have been obtained for almost two solar sunspot cycles. Plasma analyzer measurements out to 50 AU show that the mean velocity is about 430 km/sec, the mean density decreases as R exp -2, and that the terminal shock has not been encountered. The magnetic field is drawn out to form Archimedean spirals in the ecliptic place and dipolelike asymmetry in the polar directions as predicted by the Parker model. Galactic cosmic ray measurements of the intensity and radial gradient indicate a 'modulation boundary' between 70 to 100 AU from the sun. All measurements to date indicate that both spacecraft are within the heliosphere and proceeding toward the outer boundary where the modulating effect of solar activity on cosmic ray intensity ceases.

A 10 GHz Y-Ba-Cu-O/GaAs hybrid oscillator proximity coupled to a circular microstrip patch antenna

A 10 GHz hybrid YBCO/GaAs microwave oscillator proximity coupled to a circular microstrip antenna has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The oscillator was a reflection mode type using a GaAs MESFET as the active element. The feedline, transmission lines, RF chokes, and bias lines were all fabricated from YBCO superconducting thin films on a 1 cm x 1 cm lanthanum aluminate substrate. The output feedline of the oscillator was wire bonded to a superconducting feedline on a second 1 cm x 1 cm lanthanum aluminate substrate, which was in turn proximity coupled to a circular microstrip patch antenna. Antenna patterns from this active patch antenna and the performance of the oscillator measured at 77 K are reported. The oscillator had a maximum output power of 11.5 dBm at 77 K, which corresponded to an efficiency of 10 percent. In addition, the efficiency of the microstrip patch antenna together with its high temperature superconducting feedline was measured from 85 K to 30 K and was found to be 71 percent at 77 K, increasing to a maximum of 87.4 percent at 30 K.

Rough-water Impact-load Investigation of a Chine-immersed V-bottom Model Having a Dead-rise Angle of 10 Degrees

A hydrodynamic rough-water impact-loads investigation of a fixed-trim V-bottom float with a beam-loading coefficient of 5.78 and dead-rise angle of 10 degrees was made at the Langley impact basin. The size of the waves varied from approximately 10 to 60 feet in length and 1 to 2 feet in height. Time histories were obtained showing the position of the model relative to the wave throughout the impact and typical examples are presented. The load coefficient was found to vary primarily with the slope of the impacting wave.

Aerodynamic Heating and Boundary-Layer Transition on a 1/10-Power Nose Shape in Free Flight at Mach Numbers up to 6.7 and Free-Stream Reynolds Numbers up to 16 x 10(exp 6)

A modified 1/10-power nose shape has been tested in free flight at Mach numbers up to 6.7 and free - stream Reynolds numbers based on diameter up to 16 X 10(exp 6). Measured heating rates were presented and compared with calculated values. Agreement ranges from poor on the forward portion of the nose to good on the rearward portion. The local Reynolds numbers of transition based on calculated momentum thickness varied between 1, 600 and 350. Laminar flow was maintained at momentum thickness Reynolds numbers of about 1,000 until the free-stream Reynolds number based on a length of 1 foot reached about 27 X 10(exp 6). At slightly higher free-stream Reynolds numbers transition occurred at momentum thickness Reynolds numbers as low as 250.

Wind-tunnel research comparing lateral control devices, particularly at high angles of attack III : ordinary ailerons rigged up 10 degrees when neutral

This report presents the results of wind-tunnel tests made on three model wings having different sizes of ordinary ailerons rigged up 10 degrees when neutral, the same models having previously been tested with the ailerons rigged even with the wings in the usual manner. One of the wings had ailerons of medium size, 25 per cent of the wing chord by 40 per cent of the semispan, one had long, narrow ailerons, and one had short, wide ones. These tests are part of a general investigation on lateral control devices, with particular reference to the control at high angles of attack, in which all the devices are being subjected to the same series of tests in the 7 by 10 foot wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Force tests of the usual type, free-autorotation tests, and forced-rotation tests were made showing the effect of the ailerons on the general performance of the wing, on the lateral controllability, and on the lateral stability.

Circulation and rainfall climatology of a 10-year (1979 - 1988) integration with the Goddard Laboratory for atmospheres general circulation model

A 10-year (1979-1988) integration of Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres (GLA) general circulation model (GCM) under Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) is analyzed and compared with observation. The first momentum fields of circulation variables and also hydrological variables including precipitation, evaporation, and soil moisture are presented. Our goals are (1) to produce a benchmark documentation of the GLA GCM for future model improvements; (2) to examine systematic errors between the simulated and the observed circulation, precipitation, and hydrologic cycle; (3) to examine the interannual variability of the simulated atmosphere and compare it with observation; and (4) to examine the ability of the model to capture the major climate anomalies in response to events such as El Nino and La Nina. The 10-year mean seasonal and annual simulated circulation is quite reasonable compared to the analyzed circulation, except the polar regions and area of high orography. Precipitation over tropics are quite well simulated, and the signal of El Nino/La Nina episodes can be easily identified. The time series of evaporation and soil moisture in the 12 biomes of the biosphere also show reasonable patterns compared to the estimated evaporation and soil moisture.

Synoptic observations of near surface processes of an insolated ice-dust body under space conditions: The case of KOSI 9 and 10

The recent experiments of the Comet Simulation Project, KOSI 9 and KOSI 10, for the first time yielded synoptic results of physically correlated phenomena near the surface of insolated porous ice dust mixtures (90% H2O, 10% olivine, 0.1% fine dispersed carbon, sample mean density 0.40 +/- 0.001 g/cm(sup 3)) under space conditions. Correlations were observed e.g. between (1) grain size of emitted dust and dust mantle formation; (2) surface avalanches and local surface temperature; and (3) lateral variations of the surface temperature and the thickness of the dust mantle at the end of the experiment. The dynamic surface processes and the observed structural parameters of the dust mantle and the emitted mineral residues are discussed in view of real comets.

Pressure-sensing performance of upright cylinders in a Mach 10 boundary-layer

An experimental research program to provide basic knowledge of the pressure-sensing performance of upright, flushported cylinders in a hypersonic boundary layer is described. Three upright cylinders of 0.25-, 0.5- and l.0-in. diameters and a conventional rake were placed in the test section sidewall boundary layer of the 31 Inch Mach 10 Wind Tunnel at NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia. Boundary-layer pressures from these cylinders were compared to those measured with a conventional rake. A boundary-layer thickness-to-cylinder-diameter ratio of 8 proved sufficient to accurately measure an overall pressure profile and ascertain the boundary-layer thickness. Effects of Reynolds number, flow angularity, and shock wave impingement on pressure measurement were also investigated. Although Reynolds number effects were negligible at the conditions studied, flow angularity above 10 deg significantly affects the measured pressures. Shock wave impingement was used to investigate orifice-to-orifice pressure crosstalk. No crosstalk was measured. The lower pressure measured above the oblique shock wave impingement showed no influence of the higher pressure generated at the lower port locations.
