Effects of selected trajectory parameters on weight trends in the shuttle thermal protection system

An empirical heating model, thermal protection system unit weight correlation, and trajectory analysis were used to develop a computation procedure for studying the sensitivity of thermal protection system weights to variations in pertinent trajectory parameters. The analytical techniques used in developing this computer program are described. Application of the analysis to a Space Shuttle Orbiter configuration was performed to demonstrate gross thermal protection system weight trends with selected entry trajectory parameters.

Impact of remote sensing upon the planning, management and development of water resources. Summary of computers and computer growth trends for hydrologic modeling and the input of ERTS image data processing load

An analysis of current computer usage by major water resources users was made to determine the trends of usage and costs for the principal hydrologic users/models. The laws and empirical relationships governing the growth of the data processing loads were described and applied to project the future data loads. Data loads for ERTS CCT image processing were computed and projected through the 1985 era. The analysis showns significant impact due to the utilization and processing of ERTS CCT's data.

Some trends in aircraft design: Structures

Trends and programs currently underway on the national scene to improve the structural interface in the aircraft design process are discussed. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration shares a partnership with the educational and industrial community in the development of the tools, the criteria, and the data base essential to produce high-performance and cost-effective vehicles. Several thrusts to build the technology in materials, structural concepts, analytical programs, and integrated design procedures essential for performing the trade-offs required to fashion competitive vehicles are presented. The application of advanced fibrous composites, improved methods for structural analysis, and continued attention to important peripheral problems of aeroelastic and thermal stability are among the topics considered.

Status and trends in active control technology

The emergence of highly reliable fly-by-wire flight control systems makes it possible to consider a strong reliance on automatic control systems in the design optimization of future aircraft. This design philosophy has been referred to as the control configured vehicle approach or the application of active control technology. Several studies and flight tests sponsored by the Air Force and NASA have demonstrated the potential benefits of control configured vehicles and active control technology. The present status and trends of active control technology are reviewed and the impact it will have on aircraft designs, design techniques, and the designer is predicted.

The application of trend surface analysis to a portion of the Apollo 15 X-ray fluorescence data

The present work discusses some useful techniques for the detailed chemical mapping of the lunar surface from X-ray fluorescence data, using Al/Si and Mg/Si intensity ratios and preliminary geologic interpretations of some relatively small lunar physiographic features. It is shown that these features can be distinguished as anomalies by employing trend surface analysis on the data. Some correlations between albedo differences and elemental ratios can be found within mare areas. A useful lower limit of 16 seconds is established for time integrals of Al/Si intensity ratios. It was not possible here to determine the minimum time integration necessary for the best spatial mapping of the Mg/Si data.

Domestic and world trends affecting the future of aviation (1980 - 2000), appendix C

The results are presented of a study of variables affecting aviation in the United States during the last fifth of the twentieth century. A series of key trends relating to economic, social, political, technological, ecological, and environmental developments are identified and discussed with relation to their possible effects on aviation. From this analysis a series of scenarios is developed representing an array of possibilities ranging from severe economic depression and high international tension on the one hand to a world of detente which enjoys an unprecedented economic growth rate and relaxation of tensions on the other. A scenario is presented which represents the manner in which events will most probably develop and their effect on the aviation industry.

Domestic and world trends (1980 - 2000) affecting the future of aviation

Variables affecting aviation in the United States during the last fifth of the twentieth century are studied. Estimates of relevant future developments are presented and their probable impact on the aviation industry in this country are identified. A series of key trends relating to economic, social, political, technological, ecological and environmental developments are identified and discussed with relation to their possible effects on aviation. From this analysis, a series of scenarios are developed representing an array of possibilities ranging from severe economic depression and high international tension on the one hand, to a world of detente which enjoys an unprecedented economic growth rate and relaxation of tensions on the other. A surprise free scenario is presented which represents the best judgment of the manner in which events will most probably develop and the effect on the aviation industry such developments will likely produce.

Surveying the earth's environment from space - Spectral, areal, temporal coverage trends

Attention is given to various areas of satellite applications to monitoring the earth's environment. These trends primarily concern spectral, areal, and temporal coverage. Various environmental monitors are discussed in terms of derived economic benefits. Several types of remote sensors for earth applications are described, noting spectral channels, resolution cell size, swath width, and data rate. A sample environmental monitoring system is presented which includes five geostationary satellites, and three or four low earth orbit spacecraft

Oscillator strength trends in group IVb homologous ions

Shock tube data are used to examine the systematic f value behavior in prominent visible transition arrays (ns-np, np-(n+l)s, np-nd) for the homologous emitter sequence Si 11, Ge 11, Sn 11, and Pb 11. Regularities found for these data are compared with trends in lighter elements. Agreements and s disparities with theoretical and experimental oscillator strengths from the literature are noted.

Ozone and temperature trends associated with the 11-year solar cycle

Evidence is presented which suggests that trends in the ozone concentration and stratospheric temperature, reported between the early 1960's and 1976, are to a large extent due to solar ultraviolet flux variability associated with the 11-year solar cycle. Radiative-convective-photochemical simulations of ozone and temperature variations have been made with a solar ultraviolet flux variability model. Results for temperatures and ozone concentrations, when compared with published data, show good agreement.

JT9D-7A (SP) jet engine performance deterioration trends

The levels, trends, and causes of engine performance deterioration were investigated. A series of installed engine calibrations (both on-the-ground and in-flight) were performed on two new Pan American World Airways 747 SP aircraft. The performance data gathered covered from before the first flight through approximately 1000 flight cycles and 6900 flight hours. To accomplish the calibrations a special instrumentation system for ground testing of installed engines over a broad power range was used along with performing concurrent in-flight engine calibrations under revenue service conditions. Results of the analysis of the data, which provide a better understanding of short and long term performance deterioration of both engines and modules are presented.
