Multilayer Insulation Thermal Protection Systems Technology

A summary is presented of the work performed by Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) and industry toward the development of flight-type multilayer insulation(MLI) systems. The MSFC MLI program is divided into three large categories: (1) the generation and compilation of MLI composite test data; (2) the analysis, design, and testing of heat flow through MLI applied to ducting, seams, electrical feedthroughs, structural supports, and the tank sidewall; and (3) the development, modification, and utilization of new testing procedures, tanks, and the test facilities. Numerous data have been generated, analyzed, and documented on different MLI composites.

Development of lightweight graphite/polyimide sandwich panels, phases 3, 4 and 5

Work performed in the last three phases of the program included: (1) face sheet processing; (2) honeycomb core manufacture; (3) face sheet-to-core bonding development; and (4) sandwich panel fabrication and testing. Resin cure studies were a major portion of this effort since processing problems traced to the polyimide matrix resin had to be resolved before quality core and face sheets could be fabricated. Honeycomb core fabrication and testing were conducted by Hexcel Corporation. A total of four graphite/polyimide resin composite cores were fabricated, tested, and reported. Two sandwich panels weighing .48 and .58 lb/sq ft, respectively were designed and fabricated which meet the support structure loads for the shuttle orbiter thermal protection system.

Exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors

An exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors was conducted. Potential ceramic materials were evaluated in several reactor designs using both engine dynamometer and vehicle road tests. Silicon carbide contained in a corrugated metal support structure exhibited the best performance lasting over 800 hours in engine dynamometer tests and over 15,000 miles (24,200 km) of vehicle road tests. Reactors containing glass-ceramic components did not perform as well as silicon carbide. But the glass-ceramics still offer good potential for reactor use. The results of this study are considered to be a reasonable demonstration of the potential use of ceramics in thermal reactors.

Analysis of space tug operating techniques. Volume 2: Study results

The design requirements for space tug systems and cost analysis of the refurbishment phases are discussed. The vehicle is an integral propulsion stage using liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as propellants and is capable of operating either as a fully or a partially autonomous vehicle. Structural features are an integral liquid hydrogen tank, a liquid oxygen tank, a meteoroid shield, an aft conical docking and structural support ring, and a staged combustion main engine. The vehicle is constructed of major modules for ease of maintenance. Line drawings and block diagrams are included to explain the maintenance requirements for the subsystems.

Momentum wheel with magnetic bearings

An engineering model of a momentum wheel is described that is suspended by magnetic bearings. It consists of a mechanical assembly on the right, and associated electronics on the left. The momentum wheel is mounted at the center of the rotor shaft and the magnetic bearings are on each end. The rotor is magnetically suspended so there is no physical contact between the rotor and the support structure. The system, therefore, can operate directly in the vacuum environment without lubrication; and it has virtually unlimited operating lifetime, independent of speed.

RUSAP: A computer program for the calculation of Roll-Up Solar Array Performance characteristics

RUSAP is a FORTRAN 4 computer program designed to determine the performance characteristics (power-to-weight ratio, blanket tension, structural member section dimensions, and resonant frequencies) of large-area, roll-up solar arrays of the single-boom, tensioned-substrate design. The program includes the determination of the size and weight of the base structure supporting the boom and blanket and the determination of the blanket tension and deployable boom stiffness needed to achieve the minimum-weight design for a specified frequency for the first mode of vibration. A complete listing of the program, a description of the theoretical background, and all information necessary to use the program are provided.
