Investigation of a generator system for generating electrical power, to supply directly to the public network, using a windmill

A windpowered generator system is described which uses a windmill to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy for a three phase (network) voltage of constant amplitude and frequency. The generator system controls the windmill by the number of revolutions so that the power drawn from the wind for a given wind velocity is maximum. A generator revolution which is proportional to wind velocity is achieved. The stator of the generator is linked directly to the network and a feed converter at the rotor takes care of constant voltage and frequency at the stator.

Orbiting mirrors for terrestrial energy supply

A system of orbiting reflectors termed 'SOLARES' is proposed as a means of reducing the diurnal variation and increasing the average intensity of sunlight for terrestrial solar power systems. The paper discusses orbital considerations for the placement of the reflectors, insolation profiles, ground conversion options, costs, and environmental and social effects.

A standard load center converter power supply

A modular multiple-output Standard Load Center Converter (SLCC), developed for a wide range of space applications, is discussed, including its specifications, characteristics, electrical and mechanical designs, advanced heat removal techniques, and unique packaging concept. The converter can be tailored to meet specific requirements by simple selection of the proper transformer and feedback resistor networks.

Hormone supply of the organism in prolonged emotional stress

The effect of prolonged emotional stress of varying genesis on the hormonal function of the pancreas, thyroid gland, and adrenal cortex was studied. The amount of the hormonal secretion was found to depend on the type of adaptation activity and its duration. High secretion of the hormones observed outside the adaptation activity was examined as an index of the phase transition of defense reactions to the phase of overstress.

Steady-state analysis of a faulted three-phase four-wire system supplying induction motors with neutrals connected and other single-phase line-to-neutral loads

Four wire Wye connected ac power systems exhibit peculiar steady state fault characteristics when the fourth wire of three phase induction motors is connected. The loss of one phase of power source due to a series or shunt fault results in currents higher than anticipated on the remaining two phases. A theoretical approach to compute the fault currents and voltages is developed. A FORTRAN program is included in the appendix.

Forecast of long term coal supply and mining conditions: Model documentation and results

A coal industry model was developed to support the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in its investigation of advanced underground coal extraction systems. The model documentation includes the programming for the coal mining cost models and an accompanying users' manual, and a guide to reading model output. The methodology used in assembling the transportation, demand, and coal reserve components of the model are also described. Results presented for 1986 and 2000, include projections of coal production patterns and marginal prices, differentiated by coal sulfur content.

Effects of supply conditions on film thickness in lubricated Hertzian contacts

A generalization of the hydrodynamic expression for Hertzian contacts is described and various methods for calculating the thickness of the oil film winter steady-state, isothermal conditions are given. This is important for engineering applications such as gears and bearings because these results are closer to real operating conditions. Theories of lubrication are discussed, and the mathematics involved are presented using approximately 30 equations and 13 figures. For lubricated, linear, elliptical or point Hertzian contacts it is demonstrated how to calculate the thickness of the oil film at the center of the contact for steady-state isothermal conditions.

Specifying capacitors for performance and reliability in switching power supplies

The three most commonly used switching circuits are the full bridge converter, the half bridge converter, and the forward converter. All three circuits use the same pulse width concept for regulation with the major difference being how many transistors are used for power handling. The full bridge uses four transistors, the half bridge uses two, and the forward converter uses one. In practical design, forward converters are used at 300 watts and below, half bridges at 300 to 600 watts, and full bridges above 600 watts. Regulation is achieved by alternately saturating diagonal pairs of transistors in the full bridge, alternately saturating transistors in the half bridge, and simply pulse modulating one transistor in the forward converter.

Mercury - Magnetospheric processes and the atmospheric supply and loss rates

It is pointed out that the solar wind is an important contributor to the H and He components of the atmosphere of Mercury. For this reason, and because significant differences exist between the magnetospheres of Mercury and the earth, an investigation was conducted of the magnetospheric processes at Mercury to determine how these processes affect the precipitation of solar wind plasma onto the planetary surface. Attention is given to a review of estimates of the Hermaean magnetic moment, the direct impact of the solar wind on the planetary surface, precipitation along closed dayside magnetic field lines, precipitation along open dayside magnetic field lines, particles precipitating on closed field lines from the plasma sheet, radiogenic and other atmospheric sources, atmospheric loss rates, surface interaction mechanisms, and subsurface residence times and chemical reactions.

A presently available energy supply for high temperature environment (550-1000 deg F)

Sodium-sulfur cells attractive electric energy storage device for long service, are discussed. The state of art is given. More than 200 Wh/kg cells were tested. The known range of working temperature is 550 to 750 F. Self-discharge is quite nonexistent for months in operation. The technical basis for expecting an operating range up to 1,000 F under a high pressure atmosphere is given. Possibilities to adapt size and characteristics to particular interplanetary missions are discussed.

The materials system provides the materials engineer with the system analysis required for formulate sound materials processing, utilization, and resource development policies and strategies. Materials system simulation and modeling research program including assessments of materials substitution dynamics, public policy implications, and materials process economics was expanded. This effort includes several collaborative programs with materials engineers, economists, and policy analysts. The technical and socioeconomic issues of materials recycling, input-output analysis, and technological change and productivity are examined. The major thrust areas in materials systems research are outlined.

The supply of lunar oxygen to low earth orbit

Since oxygen makes up 86% of the total mass of propellants which would normally have been brought up from the earth to LEO, considerable savings are available if this oxygen can be obtained from the moon for little Delta-V penalty. This paper presents a scenario in which 400 T/yr of LOX is delivered to LEO, with the ability for upgrading to 5000 T/yr. In this scenario, cylindrical tanks of liquid oxygen with a mass of 500 kg are launched from the lunar surface by a mass driver and rendezvous with a collection station in a 100-km lunar orbit. The oxygen is removed from each tank and placed into a tanker OTV which later will transfer from low lunar orbit to LEO with an aerobraking maneuver. Launch requirements for aerobraked chemical OTVs using earth oxygen are compared to those using lunar oxygen.

Circuitry allows large multiplication of voltage. Filament voltage is -80kV. Potential difference between terminals P3 and P4 adjusted to make grid 80 to 150 volts more negative than filament enabling grid to focus electrons from filament into stream impinging on anode, which then emits x-rays. Circuitry provides independently adjustable voltages in kilovolt range for x-ray tubes and other instruments.
