Precision Measurement of the Muon Spin Precession Frequency in the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment

The Fermilab Muon $g-2$ Experiment is designed to measure the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $ a_\mu = (g-2)/2 $ with an accuracy of 140 parts per billion. This quantity is determined from two key measurements; the difference between the muon's spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency, given by $\omega_a = \omega_s - \omega_c$, and $\tilde{\omega_p^\prime}$, proportional to the muon-weighted magnetic field. In this talk, we focus on presenting the methodology for determining $\omega_a$. Muons with a momentum of 3.1 GeV are injected into a storage ring, and $\omega_a$ is extracted from the time distribution of decay positrons recorded by 24 electromagnetic calorimeters placed symmetrically inwards around the ring. We present the final result from the muon g-2 collaboration and analysis techniques based on data collected from 2020 to 2023.

VeryFastCCD: a high frame rate soft X-ray detector

Direct X-ray detection in silicon has been transformative for scattering experiments in biology and materials science. While bump-bonded hybrid pixels have been attractive for hard X-ray detection, the challenge for single photon soft X-ray detection is sufficiently low noise. CCD structures on thick, high-resistivity silicon have been successfully used as sensors over the range of soft to hard X-rays at storage rings and FELs. The VeryFastCCD is a high frame rate, column-parallel CCD sensor with 48 μm pixels. Combined with 256-channel custom readout ASICs, frame rates of 5–10 kHz have been achieved with readout noise as low as 20 e and full-well capacity >4 × 10 5 e/pixel. Thin (10 nm and 100 nm) entrance window contact processes have also been developed which provide >85% quantum efficiency for 285 eV X-rays. Systems are currently being developed for several beamlines at the upgraded Advanced Light Source.

Status of the Proton EDM Experiment (pEDM)

The Proton EDM Experiment (pEDM) is the first direct search for the proton electric dipole moment (EDM) with the aim of being the first experiment to probe the Standard Model (SM) prediction of any particle EDM. Phase-I of pEDM will achieve $10^{-29} e\cdot$cm, improving current indirect limits by four orders of magnitude. This will establish a new standard of precision in nucleon EDM searches and offer a unique sensitivity to better understand the Strong CP problem. The experiment is ideally positioned to explore physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), with sensitivity to axionic dark matter via the signal of an oscillating proton EDM and across a wide mass range of BSM models from $\mathcal{O}(1\text{GeV})$ to $\mathcal{O}(10^3\text{TeV})$. Utilizing the frozen-spin technique in a highly symmetric storage ring that leverages existing infrastructure at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), pEDM builds upon the technological foundation and experimental expertise of the highly successful Muon $g$$-$$2$ Experiments. With significant R&D and prototyping already underway, pEDM is preparing a conceptual design report (CDR) to offer a cost-effective, high-impact path to discovering new sources of CP violation and advancing our understanding of fundamental physics. It will play a vital role in complementing the physics goals of the next-generation collider while simultaneously contributing to sustaining particle physics research and training early-career researchers during gaps between major collider operations.

The optical properties of platinum and gold in the vacuum ultraviolet

The optical constants of platinum and gold thin films have been determined in the spectral region of 40 to 200 nm by reflection measurements. The highly polarized continuum of synchrotron radiation emitted by the 240-MeV electron storage ring at the Physical Sciences Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin was used as a light source for the spectrum below 120 nm, while a windowless discharge lamp coupled to a normal incidence monochromator provided a source for the longer wavelengths. Optical constants were determined by a computer program based on iterative solutions to the Fresnel equations for reflection as a function of the angle of incidence.

An extreme ultraviolet photometer for solar observations from the Atmosphere Explorer satellites

A broadband photometer experiment is being fabricated for the Atmosphere Explorer C, D and E missions to record the solar irradiance in the 40 to 1250 A region with seven distinct passbands. The experiment consists principally of four spinal electron multipliers located behind a moving eight position filter wheel. Six metallic filters are used to spectrally isolate the solar irradiance. In addition three Al2O3 diodes, two with filters, are being used to record the solar irradiance over the range of orbital altitudes from perigee through apogee. A principal goal of the experiment will be to measure time dependence of the solar irradiance with respect to a storage ring synchrotron light source which has been calibrated in terms of the best currently available standards of irradiance.

Feasibility of coherent X-ray production by X-ray pumping

It is suggested that coherent X-rays can be produced by inverting the electron population in a suitable target, such as Li, through irradiation with X-rays generated by fast electrons traversing an electromagnetic field (as in a storage ring). Conditions to be satisfied by target and radiation parameters are stated, and examples given.

Relative abundances of positrons and antiprotons in the primary cosmic ray flux

Observations on the ratio of positrons to the electron-positron sum made in the 5 to 50 GeV range by Buffington et al. (1974) are used to put an upper limit on the ratio of antiprotons to protons at various energies. The calculation of the latter ratio is based on detailed measurements of the cross section of antiproton production up to intersecting storage ring energies.

Unfolding first and second order diffracted radiation when using synchrotron radiation sources - A technique

A technique is presented of using a single calibrated XUV detector for radiometric measurements of synchrotron radiation after the radiation passes through a monochromator that produces a mixture of first- and second-order diffracted radiation. Irradiance measurements are made with the synchrotron source operating at two different energies for the orbiting electrons. The known change in the spectral distribution produced by the electron energy change is used to calculate the flux in both first and second order. The dependence of the precision of these determinations on the two detected currents and on the detector calibration at both first- and second-order wavelengths is calculated. Experimental results using the National Bureau of Standards synchrotron (SURF-I) are presented, and anticipated results for the new NBS electron storage ring (SURF-II) are calculated.

Measurements of selected psi /3684/ branching ratios from a study of secondary lepton pairs

The measurements considered were made at the electron-positron storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The apparatus used consists of two identical spectrometers mounted in a collinear configuration about the beam-interaction region. The energies of secondary electrons or positrons are measured with good resolution in large NaI(Tl) total-absorption detectors. Data accumulated without gamma-ray converters were examined for electron-positron pairs. The data taken with gamma-ray converters in place and at center-of-mass energies within 1 MeV of the resonance energy were scanned for evidence of either charged particles or converted gamma rays accompanying the detected muon pairs.

Search for monenergetic gamma rays from psi /3684/ decay

Results are reported of a search for monoenergetic gamma rays with energies above 50 MeV arising from psi (3684) decay. The measurements were made by operating an electron-positron storage ring at a center-of-mass energy of 3684 MeV and detecting the secondary gamma rays with large-crystal NaI(T1) spectrometers. No significant evidence is found for the emission of such radiation, and upper limits are placed on such emissions for energies above 50 MeV.

A calibration of detectors and gratings between 100 and 600 Angstroms

Calibration and efficiency measurements of magnetic electron multipliers, diffraction gratings, and photocathodes over the wavelength range 100 to 600 A are reported. For some of the measurements it was found necessary to use the synchrotron radiation from a storage ring. Measurements of grating efficiencies, the polarization produced by diffraction gratings, and the photoelectric yields of various photocathodes are included.

Ultraviolet photometry from the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory. XXI - Absolute energy distribution of stars in the ultraviolet

The absolute energy distribution in the ultraviolet is given for the stars alpha Vir, eta UMa, and alpha Leo. The calibration is based on absolute heterochromatic photometry between 2920 and 1370 A carried out with an Aerobee sounding rocket. The fundamental radiation standard is the synchrotron radiation from 240-MeV electrons in a certain synchrotron storage ring. On the basis of the sounding-rocket calibration, the preliminary OAO-2 spectrometer calibration has been revised; the fluxes for the three program stars are tabulated in energy per second per square centimeter per unit wavelength interval.

An investigation of high-multiplicity gamma events in pp collisions with c.m. energies between 22 and 62 GeV

An experiment was conducted at the CERN intersecting storage rings using colliding proton beams to investigate high-multiplicity gamma-ray events. The objective of the study was to reveal certain features of multiple pion production as well as other possible mechanisms of gamma-ray production. The detector system consisted of ten planes of spark chambers, three scintillation counter hodoscopes and two arrays of lead-glass Cerenkov counters, the first array containing 16 counters and the second, 60 counters. The event trigger was obtained from the Cerenkov counters, and the energies in all the Cerenkov counters after trigger, as well as the information on all the charged particles given by the scintillation counters and spark chambers were recorded on magnetic tape. The relationship between the number of gamma-rays per event and the number of Cerenkov counters triggered by a neutral secondary was established by means of a Monte Carlo calculation.

Flywheel energy storage. II - Magnetically suspended superflywheel

This article, the second of a two part paper, describes the general design requirements for a flywheel energy storage system. A new superflywheel energy storage system, using a spokeless, magnetically suspended, composite material pierced disk rotor is proposed. The new system is configured around a permanent magnet ('flux biased') magnetic suspension system with active control in the radial direction and passive control in the axial direction. The storage ring is used as a moving rotor and electronic commutation of stationary armature coils is proposed. There is no mechanical contact with the rotating ring and long life and low run down losses are projected. A discussion of major components for a 10 kwh system is presented.

Lyman-alpha fluorescence from hydrogen photofragments of CH4 and H2O

The process of H-Lyman-alpha fluorescence produced through photodissociation of CH4 and H2O provides an example for the usefulness of the detection of fluorescence of dissociation fragments as an aid in identifying some high lying Rydberg states. In the first experiment reported, an electron storage ring synchrotron radiation source was used. The fluorescence produced was detected with a solar blind photomultiplier and a Cs photocathode with a spectral sensitivity in the wavelength range from 1050 to 1950 A. In the second experiment considered, an intense atomic line source was employed.

Study of the potential usefulness of superfine holographic x-ray gratings in AXAF and astrophysics in general

Present day high energy electron storage rings and insertion devices (wigglers and undulators) provide the necessary technology to manufacture superfile (line density or=100,00/mm) holographic X-ray gratings. The usefulness in future astrophysical research of such gratings is determined, as a function of the grating size and line density. A model design is given for an instrument which would fit within the (presently specified) constraints of the planned Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF).

Photoabsorption cross section of acetylene in the EUV region

The measurement of the absolute photoabsorption cross sections of C2H2 in the 175-740 A region by means of a double ionization chamber is reported. The continuum background source is the synchrotron radiation emitted by the Wisconsin 240 MeV electron storage ring. It is found that the cross sections range from 2 to a maximum of 36 Mb. Two new Rydberg series are identified and the cross section data are applied in the analysis of various sum rules. From the rules, it is shown that the data of C2H2 in the 580-1088 A range may be too low, while the measured ionization transition moment may be too high.
