Temperature-dependent spin dynamics in Cr 2 O 3

Cr 2 ⁢O 3 emerges as a prominent candidate material for spintronics and magnetoelectronic applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of its temperature-dependent spin dynamics remains elusive, impeding the engineering of novel spintronics based on this material. Here, we delve into this through a combination of inelastic neutron scattering experiments and atomistic simulations. Our results unveiled the emergence of paramagnons above and below 𝑇 𝑁 . We demonstrated a significant softening of linear magnons upon heating in the antiferromagnetic state. Further analysis revealed that this softening primarily originated from four-magnon interactions, while thermal expansion played a minor role.

Solid-state platform for cooperative quantum dynamics driven by correlated emission

While traditionally regarded as an obstacle to quantum coherence, recent breakthroughs in quantum optics have shown that the dissipative interaction of a qubit with its environment can be leveraged to protect quantum states and synthesize many-body entanglement. Inspired by this progress, here we set the stage for the—as yet uncharted—exploration of analogous cooperative phenomena in hybrid solid-state platforms. We develop a comprehensive formalism for the quantum many-body dynamics of an ensemble of solid-state spin defects interacting with the magnetic field fluctuations of a common solid-state reservoir. Our framework applies to any solid-state reservoir whose fluctuating spin, pseudospin, or charge degrees of freedom generate magnetic fields. To understand whether correlations induced by dissipative processes can play a relevant role in a realistic experimental setup, we apply our model to a qubit array interacting via the spin fluctuations of a ferromagnetic bath. Our results show that the low-temperature collective relaxation rates of the qubit ensemble can display clear signatures of super- and subradiance, i.e., forms of cooperative dynamics traditionally achieved in atomic ensembles. We find that the solid-state analog of these cooperative phenomena is robust against spatial disorder in the qubit ensemble and thermal fluctuations of the magnetic reservoir, providing a route for their feasibility in near-term experiments. Finally, our work lays the foundation for a multiqubit approach to quantum sensing of solid-state systems and the direct generation of many-body entanglement in spin-defect ensembles. Furthermore, we discuss how the tunability of solid-state reservoirs opens up novel pathways for exploring cooperative phenomena in regimes beyond the reach of conventional quantum optics setups.

Quantum Phases of Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Moiré Systems

Moiré systems provide a rich platform for studies of strong correlation physics. Recent experiments on heterobilayer transition metal dichalcogenide Moiré systems are exciting in that they manifest a relatively simple model system of an extended Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Inspired by the prospect of the hetero-transition metal dichalcogenide Moiré system’s potential as a solid-state-based quantum simulator, we explore the extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice using the density matrix renormalization group. Specifically, we explore the two-dimensional phase space spanned by the key tuning parameters in the extended Hubbard model, namely, the kinetic energy strength and the further-range Coulomb interaction strengths. We find competition between Fermi fluid, chiral spin liquid, spin density wave, and charge order. In particular, our finding of the optimal further-range interaction for the chiral correlation presents a tantalizing possibility.

Orbital Angular Momentum of Magnons in Collinear Magnets

We study the orbital angular momentum of magnons for collinear ferromagnet (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) systems with nontrivial networks of exchange interactions. The orbital angular momentum of magnons for AF and FM zigzag and honeycomb lattices becomes nonzero when the lattice contains two inequivalent sites and is largest at the avoided-crossing points or extremum of the frequency bands. Hence, the arrangement of exchange interactions may play a more important role at producing the orbital angular momentum of magnons than the spin-orbit coupling energy and the resulting noncollinear arrangement of spins.

Evolution of noncollinear magnetism in magnetocaloric MnPtGa

MnPtGa crystallizes in the hexagonal Ni 2 In structure type in space group P6 3 /mmc and has been reported to display a ferromagnetic Curie temperature near 220K. Here we find a transition near T c = 236 K to a ferromagnetic state, albeit with a reduced moment from what is expected for collinear ordering. The peak magnetocaloric entropy change was determined to be ΔS M = –1.9 J kg –1 K –1 for an applied magnetic field of H = 5 T at the ferromagnetic ordering temperature. Magnetostructural coupling manifests as a change in the slope of the thermal expansion coefficients of the c lattice parameter near T c , with a negative spontaneous volume magnetostriction; ω = –300 ppm at 190K. In this work, neutron powder diffraction studies of the magnetic ground state reveal an evolution in complexity as temperature decreases: from a ferromagnet, to a canted antiferromagnet, to the eventual formation of a spin-density-wave state at low temperatures.

Renormalized classical theory of quantum magnets

Here, we derive a renormalized classical spin (RCS) theory for 𝑆 >1/2 quantum magnets by constraining a generalized classical theory that includes all multipolar fluctuations to a reduced CP 1 phase space of dipolar SU(2) coherent states. When the spin Hamiltonian $\hat{ℋ}$(𝑆) is linear in the spin operators $\hat{𝑺}$ 𝑗 for each lattice site 𝑗, the RCS Hamiltonian $\tilde{ℋ}$ cl coincides with the usual classical model ℋ cl = lim 𝑆→∞⁡ $\hat{ℋ}$(𝑆). In the presence of nonlinear terms, however, the RCS theory is more accurate than ℋ cl . For the many materials modeled by spin Hamiltonians with (nonlinear) single-ion anisotropy terms, the use of the RCS theory is essential to accurately model phase diagrams and to extract the correct Hamiltonian parameters from neutron-scattering data.

Instability of Nagaoka State and Quantum Phase Transition via Kinetic Frustration Control

We investigate the Nagaoka-Thouless (NT) ferromagnetic instability in the strongly interacting t-t' Hubbard model by continuously breaking particle-hole symmetry on a tunable square-triangular lattice geometry. We use an analytic approach to show that the fully spin-polarized state becomes unstable to a metastable spin-polaron when the kinetic frustration t'/t exceeds a critical, dimension-dependent value. Large-scale density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations reveal a quantum phase transition from the NT ferromagnet to a spiral spin-density wave, which evolves continuously into the Haerter-Shastry antiferromagnet in the large-frustration limit. Remarkably, this transition remains robust at low but finite hole density, making it accessible in cold-atom and moiré Hubbard platforms under strong interactions. A variational analysis further captures the instability mechanism at finite density via frustration-induced magnon band deformation.

Rigorous solutions for sound radiation from circular ducts with hyperbolic horns or infinite plane baffle

A rigorous treatment is presented of sound radiation from circular ducts with either a hyperbolic horn or an infinite plane baffle. In the analysis hyperboloidal wave functions are used, which are defined here, for the first time, as a class of eigensolutions of the wave equation for oblate spheroidal co-ordinates. The numerical results include the complex conversion (or reflection) coefficients and the radiation directivity for various incident wave modes, spinning modes as well as axisymmetric modes. The solutions are valid for the whole frequency range including frequencies above and below the cut-off frequencies of the duct modes involved.

Coexisting static magnetic ordering and superconductivity in CeCu2.1Si2 found by muon spin relaxation

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation measurements on a heavy fermion system CeCu2.1 Si2 have revealed an onset of static magnetic ordering below T(M) approximately 0.8 K, which coexists with superconductivity below T(c) = 0.7 K. The line shapes of the observed muon spin depolarization functions suggest an ordering in either spin glass or incommensurate spin-density-wave state, with a small averaged static moment of the order of 0.1 micro-B per formula unit at T approaches 0.

Static magnetic ordering of CeCu2.1Si2 found by muon spin relaxation

Zero- and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation measurements on a polycrystal sample of a heavy fermion superconductor CeCu2.1 Si2 (T(c) = 0.7 K) have revealed an onset of static magnetic ordering below T approximately 0.8 K. The line shapes of the observed spectra in zero field indicate a wide distribution of static random local fields at muon sites, suggesting that the ordering is either spin glass or incommensurate spin-density-wave state. The observed width of the random local field at T = 0.05 K corresponds to a small averaged static moment of the order of 0.1 micro-B per formula unit.

A Quasioptical Vector Interferometer for Polarization Control

We present a mathematical description of a Quasioptical Vector Interferometer (QVI), a device that maps an input polarization state to an output polarization state by introducing a phase delay between two linear orthogonal components of the input polarization. The advantages of such a device over a spinning wave-plate modulator for measuring astronomical polarization in the far-infrared through millimeter are: 1. The use of small, linear motions eliminates the need for cryogenic rotational bearings, 2. The phase flexibility allows measurement of Stokes V as well as Q and U, and 3. The QVI allows for both multi-wavelength and broadband modulation. We suggest two implementations of this device as an astronomical polarization modulator. The first involves two such modulators placed in series. By adjusting the two phase delays, it is possible to use such a modulator to measure Stokes Q, U, and V for passbands that are not too large. Conversely, a single QVI may be used to measure Q and V independent of frequency. In this implementation, Stokes U must be measured by rotating the instrument. We conclude this paper by presenting initial laboratory results.
