Materials design, synthesis, and transport properties of disordered rare-earth Zintl bismuthides with the anti -Th 3 P 4 structure type

The synthesis, structural elucidation, and transport properties of the extended series Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 (RE = Y, La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, and Lu; x ≈ 1) and Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ (RE = La, Ho, Er, and Lu; x ≈ 1, δ ≈ 1.5) are presented. Structural elucidation is based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and confirms the chemical drive of Ca4Bi3 with the cubic anti-Th 3 P 4 structure type (space group I4 ¯3d, no. 220, Z = 4) into a Zintl phase by the introduction of trivalent rare-earth atoms. The structure features complex bonding, heavy elements, and electron count akin to that of valence-precise semiconductors, making it an ideal target for thermoelectrics development. Introducing crystallographic site disorders at the cation site for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 phase and both the cation and anion sites for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ phase brings about additional desirable characteristics for thermoelectric materials in the context of tuning knobs for lowering thermal conductivity. Electronic structure calculations of idealized Ca 3 YBi 3 and Ca 3 LaBi 3 compounds indicate the opening of indirect bandgaps at the Fermi level with magnitudes Eg = 0.38 eV and 0.57 eV, respectively. The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of some of the investigated phases measured on single crystals evolve in a metallic manner with magnitudes of order 1.4 mΩ cm near 500 K, thus supporting the notion of a degenerate semiconducting state, with the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient α(T) suggesting the p-type behavior. Furthermore, the low electrical resistivity and the realization of a degenerate semiconducting state in the title phases present a window of opportunity for optimizing their carrier concentrations for enhanced thermoelectric performance.

The non-centrosymmetric layered compounds IrTe 2 I and RhTe 2 I

The previously unreported layered compounds IrTe 2 I and RhTe 2 I were prepared by a high-pressure synthesis method. Single crystal X-ray and powder X-ray diffraction studies find that the compounds are isostructural, crystallizing in a layered orthorhombic structure in the non-centrosymmetric, non-symmorphic space group Pca2 1 (#29). Characterization reveals diamagnetic, high resistivity, semiconducting behavior for both compounds, consistent with the +3 chemical valence and d 6 electronic configurations for both iridium and rhodium and the Te–Te dimers seen in the structural study. Finally, electronic band structures are calculated for both compounds, showing good agreement with the experimental results.

Antimony doping to enhance luminescence of tin ($\mathrm{IV}$)-based hybrid metal halides

Lead-based organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have recently attracted special attention due to their efficient broadband photoluminescence. However, the toxicity of lead poses a challenge for their further development. In this paper we selected Sn(IV) as the metal center to synthesize the environmentally friendly and stable luminescent OIMHs (C 9 H 15 N 3 ) 2 SnCI 8 and C 9 H 15 N 3 ) 2 SnBr 8 (C 9 H 13 N 3 is 1-(2-2-pyridyl)piperazine). Both compounds possess zero-dimensional structures, crystallizing in the monoclinic space group P2 1 /c, and their optical band gaps were experimentally determined to be 3.19 and 2.60 eV, respectively. Under UV excitation at room temperature, (C 9 H 15 N 3 ) 2 SnCI 8 exhibited double-peak emissions centered at 405 and 688 nm, which were attributed to the organic cation and inorganic octahedra, respectively. Upon introducing 5s 2 -lone-pair-containing Sb 3+ in (C 9 H 15 N 3 ) 2 SnCI 8 , self-trapped emission was promoted, and the photoluminescence quantum yield increased from ~1% to ~17.84%. This work suggests effective strategies for finding environmentally friendly stable OIMHs and for further enhancing the luminescence properties through lone-pair-containing cation doping.

NaCo 2 (SeO 3 ) 2 (OH): competing magnetic ground states of a new sawtooth structure with 3d 7 Co 2+ ions

While certain magnetic sublattices have long been known theoretically to give rise to emergent physics via competing magnetic interactions and quantum effects, finding such configurations in real materials is often deeply challenging. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a new such material, NaCo 2 (SeO 3 ) 2 (OH) which crystallizes with a highly frustrated sublattice of sawtooth Co 2+ chains. Single crystals of NaCo 2 (SeO 3 ) 2 (OH) were synthesized using a low-temperature hydrothermal method. X-ray single crystal structure analysis reveals that the material crystallizes in orthorhombic space group of Pnma (no. 62). Its crystal structure exhibits one-dimensional chains of corner-sharing isosceles triangles that are made of two crystallographically distinct 3d 7 Co 2+ sites (Co(1) and Co(2)). The chains run along the b-axis and are interconnected via [SeO 3 ] groups to form a three-dimensional structure mediating super-exchange interactions. The temperature dependent magnetization data show a ferromagnetic-like (FM) transition at 11 K (T 1 ) followed by an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at about 6 K (T 2 ). Neutron-powder diffraction measurements reveal that at T 1 = 11 K only the Co(2) site orders magnetically, forming ferromagnetic zigzag chains along the b-axis. Below T 2 = 6 K, both Co(1) and Co(2) sites order in a nearly orthogonal configuration, with Co(1) moments lying inside the plane of the sawtooth chain while Co(2) moments cant out of the plane. The canting of the magnetic moments leads to a net ferromagnetic component along b-axis, parallel to the chain direction. The ordered moments are fully compensated in the ac-plane. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal crystal field excitations that are consistent with the presence of a spin–orbital entangled pseudo-spin state J eff = 1/2 for the Co 2+ ions. Low-energy spin-wave excitations are observed below the second magnetic transition. The analysis of powder excitation spectrum suggests complex exchange interactions that go beyond a Heisenberg Hamiltonian model with nearest neighbor couplings. Our results demonstrate the richness of the magnetic properties of sawtooth-type structures and encourage the study of similar structures with different oxyanion groups.

Magnetic structures and excitations in sawtooth olivine chalcogenides Mn 2 SiX 4 (X = S, Se)

The Mn lattice in olivine chalcogenide Mn 2 SiX 4 (X = S, Se) compounds forms a sawtooth, which is of special interest in magnetism owing to the possibility of realizing flat bands in magnon spectra, a key component in magnonics. In this work, we investigate the Mn 2 SiX 4 olivines using magnetic susceptibility, and X-ray and neutron diffraction. We have determined the average and local crystal structures of Mn 2 SiS 4 and Mn 2 SiSe 4 using synchrotron X-ray, neutron diffraction, and X-ray total scattering data followed by Rietveld and pair distribution function analyses. It is found from the pair distribution function analysis that the Mn triangle that constitutes the sawtooth is isosceles in Mn 2 SiS 4 and Mn 2 SiSe 4 . The temperature evolution of magnetic susceptibility of Mn 2 SiS 4 and Mn 2 SiSe 4 shows anomalies below 83 K and 70 K, respectively, associated with magnetic ordering. From the neutron powder diffraction measurements the magnetic space groups of Mn 2 SiS 4 and Mn 2 SiSe 4 are found to be Pnma and Pnm'a', respectively. Here, we find that the Mn spins adopt a ferromagnetic alignment on the sawtooth in both Mn 2 SiS 4 and Mn 2 SiSe 4 but along different crystallographic directions for the S and the Se compounds. From the temperature evolution of Mn magnetic moments obtained from refining neutron diffraction data, the transition temperatures are accurately determined as T N (S) = 83(2) K and T N (Se) = 70.0(5) K. Broad diffuse magnetic peaks are observed in both the compounds, and are prominently seen close to T N , suggesting the presence of a short-range magnetic order. The magnetic excitations studied using inelastic neutron scattering reveal a magnon excitation with an energy corresponding to approximately 4.5 meV in both S and Se compounds. Spin correlations are observed to persist up to 125 K much above the ordering temperature and we suggest the possibility of short-range spin correlations responsible for this.

Structure, electrical and thermal properties of single-crystal BaCuGdTe 3

Single crystals of the quaternary chalcogenide BaCuGdTe 3 were obtained by direct reaction of elements allowing for a complete investigation of the intrinsic electrical and thermal properties of this previously uninvestigated material. The structure was investigated by high-resolution single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction, revealing an orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group Cmcm. Although recently identified as a semiconductor suitable for thermoelectric applications from theoretical analyses, our electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient measurements show metallic conduction, the latter revealing strong phonon-drag. Temperature dependent hole mobility reveals dominant acoustic phonon scattering. Heat capacity data reveal a Debye temperature of 183 K and a very high density of states at the Fermi level, the latter confirming the metallic nature of this composition. Thermal conductivity is relatively high with Umklapp processes dominating thermal transport above the Debye temperature. The findings in this work lay the foundation for a more detailed understanding of the physical properties of this and similar multinary chalcogenide materials, and is part of the continuing effort in investigating quaternary chalcogenide materials and their suitability for use in technological applications.

Resilience of the Aurivillius structure upon La and Cr doping in a Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 multiferroic

Here, combining the experimental techniques of high-resolution X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, specific heat measurement, and X-ray photoelectron, Raman and dielectric spectroscopy techniques, we have studied the influence of La and Cr doping on the crystal structure and magnetism of the room temperature Aurivillius multiferroic Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 by investigating the physical properties of (Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 and Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 . The parent (Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 ) and the doped ((Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 and Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 ) compounds crystallize in the A2 1 am space group, which is confirmed through our analysis of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction data obtained on phase-pure polycrystalline powders. We determined the oxidation states of the metal atoms in the studied compounds as Fe 3+ , Ti 4+ , Cr 3+ , and La 3+ through the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data. The magnetic susceptibilities of the three compounds are marked by the absence of a long-range ordered ground state, but dominated by superparamagnetic clusters with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. This signature of short-range magnetism is also seen in specific heat as a low temperature enhancement which is suppressed upon the application of external magnetic fields up to 8 T. Our dielectric spectroscopy experiments showed that the three studied compounds display similar features in the dielectric constant measured as a function of frequency. However, upon doping La at the Bi site, the width of the ferroelectric hysteresis loop increases for (Bi 4 La)Ti 3 FeO 15 compared to that of the parent compound Bi 5 Ti 3 FeO 15 , and with Cr doping, Bi 5 Ti 3 (Fe 0.5 Cr 0.5 )O 15 becomes a leaky dielectric. The resilience of the Aurivillius crystal structure towards doping of La at the Bi site and Cr at the Fe site is clearly seen in the bulk properties of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and the average crystal structure. The relevance of changes in the local structure is evident from our Raman spectroscopy and X-ray pair distribution function studies.

Theoretical search for possible Li–Ni–B crystal structures using an adaptive genetic algorithm

The structural diversity of rare-earth and transition metal borides indicates that alkali-transition metal borides (A-T-B) show tremendous promise in exhibiting a variety of crystal structures with different dimensionalities of T-B frameworks. On the other hand, the A-T-B ternary systems are severely underexplored because of the synthetic challenges associated with their preparation. Accurate and efficient computational predictions of low-energy stable and metastable phases can identify the optimal compositions of the hypothetical compounds in the A-T-B systems to guide the synthesis. As such, in this work, we have computationally discovered several new phases in the Li–Ni–B ternary system. The newly discovered LiNiB, Li 2 Ni 3 B, and Li 2 NiB phases expand the existing theoretical database, and the convex-hull surface of Li–Ni–B has been re-constructed. The lowest energy structure of the LiNiB compound has been found by an adaptive genetic algorithm with layered motif, which matches with the experimentally determined structure. According to our electrochemical calculations, LiNiB and another predicted layered Li 2 NiB compounds have great potential as anode materials for lithium batteries. The Li 2 Ni 3 B compound with the space group P4 3 32 was predicted to crystallize in a cubic structure composed of distorted octahedral units of BNi 6 , which is isostructural to two noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li 2 Pd 3 B and Li 2 Pt 3 B. While we were unable to experimentally confirm the Li 2 Ni 3 B compound utilizing the hydride synthetic route, attempts to synthesize this compound by alternate methods remain highly desirable, considering its potential superconducting properties.

Self-assembly of a triply periodic continuous mesophase with Fddd symmetry in simple one-component liquids

Triply periodic continuous morphologies (networks) arising as a result of the microphase separation in block copolymer melts have so far never been observed self-assembled in systems of particles with spherically symmetric interaction. Here, we report a molecular dynamics simulation where two simple one-component liquids form upon cooling an equilibrium network with the Fddd space group symmetry. This complexity reduction in the liquid network formation in terms of the particle geometry and the number of components evidences the generic nature of this class of phase transition suggesting opportunities for producing these structures in a variety of new systems.

DyFe 2 O 4 : A new trigonal rare-earth ferrite grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

Using epitaxial stabilization, we synthesized single-phase (001)-oriented thin films of DyFe 2 O 4+x on (111) MgAl 2 O 4 substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The metastable DyFe 2 O 4 polymorph formed is isostructural to known trigonal ferrimagnetic RFe 2 O 4 phases with space group $R\bar{3}m$, where R = Ho to Lu. The epitaxial DyFe 2 O 4 thin films have two in-plane orientation relationships: [100] DyFe 2 O 4 || [$2\bar{1}1$] MgAl 2 O 4 plus a twin variant related by a 60° in-plane rotation. DyFe 2 O 4 is not bulk stable and has never been synthesized before. Indeed, it has been predicted to be on the edge energetically of what may be possible to stabilize. The fact that the RFe 2 O 4 phase is stable for all elements leading up to dysprosium (Ho–Lu) leads us to believe that DyFe 2 O 4 could be a “remnant metastable phase,” one which, given the right thermodynamic conditions, could become the lowest free energy phase. We find that although we are able to get structurally very close to $R\bar{3}m$ DyFe 2 O 4 , the films are not stoichiometric as they have an increased c lattice parameter, indicative of extra oxygen as is sometimes seen in other RFe2O4 phases. The unintended surplus oxygen opens questions regarding what may be achievable using such tricks as epitaxial stabilization to access metastable phases and whether this indeed constitutes “remnant metastability.”

Fantastic n = 4: Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny of the A n +1M n X3 n +1 homologous series

Ce-based intermetallics are of interest due to the potential to study the interplay of localized magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Our work on Ce-based germanides led to the identification of a new homologous series An+1MnX3n+1 (A = rare earth, M = transition metal, X = tetrels, and n = 1–6). This work presents the single-crystal growth, structure determination, and anisotropic magnetic properties of the n = 4 member of the Cen+1ConGe3n+1 homologous series. Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny consists of three Ce sites, three Co sites, seven Ge sites, and two Sn sites, and the crystal structure is best modeled in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm where a = 4.3031(8) Å, b = 45.608(13) Å, and c = 4.3264(8) Å, which is in close agreement with the previously reported Sn-free analog where a = 4.265(1) Å, b = 45.175(9) Å, and c = 4.293(3) Å. Anisotropic magnetic measurements show Kondo-like behavior and three magnetic transitions at 6, 4.9, and 2.4 K for Ce5Co4+xGe13−ySny.

Synthesis and anisotropic magnetism in quantum spin liquid candidates A YbSe 2 ( A = K and Rb)

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in rare-earth triangular lattices has attracted much attention recently due to its potential application in quantum computing and communication. Here, we report the single-crystal growth synthesis, crystal structure characterizations, and magnetic properties of AYbSe 2 (A = K and Rb) compounds. The x-ray diffraction analysis shows that AYbSe 2 (A = K and Rb) crystallizes in a trigonal space group, R-3m (No. 166) with Z = 3. AYbSe 2 possesses a two-dimensional (2D) Yb–Se–Yb layered structure formed by edged-shared YbSe 6 octahedra. The magnetic properties are highly anisotropic for both title compounds, and no long-range order is found down to 0.4 K, revealing the possible QSL ground state in these compounds. The isothermal magnetization exhibits a one-third magnetization plateau when the magnetic fields are applied in the ab-plane. Heat capacity is performed along both ab-plane and c axis and features the characteristic dome for triangular magnetic lattice compounds as a function of magnetic fields. Due to the change in the interlayer and intralayer distance of Yb 3+ , the dome shifts to low fields from KYbSe 2 to RbYbSe 2 . All these results indicate that the AYbSe 2 family presents unique frustrated magnetism close to the possible QSL and noncollinear spin states.

Pressure, temperature, and orientation dependent thermal conductivity of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN)

We use reverse non-equilibrium molecular dynamics to determine the thermal conductivity tensor, κ, of tetragonal pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN). The most stable form under standard ambient conditions (PETN I, with space group P4¯2 1 c) is considered in the temperature and pressure intervals 200–500 K and 0–8 GPa, which covers approximately the stability range for this polymorph. We compute κ along the [100] and [001] directions, which is enough to construct the full thermal conductivity tensor for a system with tetragonal symmetry. In addition, we also determine κ along the [010] direction and confirm that κ 100 ~ κ 010 , with less than 4% average absolute error between the two quantities. We observe an anisotropic response for κ, with κ 100 > κ 001 across the whole (T,P) interval, and 37% difference at 300 K, 0 GPa. Furthermore, we provide analytical functions to interpolate κ(P,T) within the fitting interval and serve as input for continuum-scale simulations.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties in semiconducting Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 with Eu-Eu dimers

Magnetic structure and crystal symmetry, which primarily determine the time-reversal and inversion symmetry, may give rise to numerous exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic semiconductors and semimetals when arranged in different patterns. Here, a new layered magnetic semiconductor, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 , was discovered and high-quality single crystals were grown using the Sn flux. According to structural characterization by x-ray diffraction and atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is found to crystallize in a hexagonal symmetry with the space group P6 3 /mmc (No. 194). After examining different specimens, we conclude that their stoichiometry is fixed at ~Eu 2.6 Zn 0.65 Sn 0.85 As 3 , which meets the chemical charge balance. Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 is composed of septuple (Eu 1-δ Sn y As 2 )-Eu-(Zn x As)-Eu sequences. The shortest Eu–Eu distance in the system is between two Eu layers separated by Zn x As along the c-axis. Magnetization measurement shows an antiferromagnetic ordering in Eu 3-δ Zn x Sn y As 3 at T N ~ 12 K, where the magnetic easy-axis is along the c-axis, and Mössbauer spectroscopy observes magnetic hyperfine splitting on Eu and Sn at 6 K. Magnetic anisotropy is significantly different from the ones along the ab-plane in other layered Eu-based magnetic semimetals. Heat capacity measurements confirm the magnetic transition around 12 K. Electrical resistivity measurement indicates semiconductor behavior with a band gap of ~0.86 eV. Finally, various Eu-based magnetic semiconductors could provide a tunable platform to study potential topological and magnetic properties.

Photoinduced patterning of oxygen vacancies to promote the ferroelectric phase of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2

Photoinduced reductions in the oxygen vacancy concentration were leveraged to increase the ferroelectric phase fraction of Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 thinfilms. Modest ( ~ 2 — 77 pJ=cm 2 ) laser doses of visible light (488 nm, 2.54 eV) spatially patterned the concentration of oxygen vacancies as monitored by photoluminescence imaging. Local, tip-based, near-field, nanoFTIR measurements showed that the photoinduced oxygen vacancy concentration reduction promoted formation of the ferroelectric phase (space group Pca2 1 ), resulting in an increase in the piezoelectric response measured by piezoresponse force microscopy. Photoinduced vacancy tailoring provides, therefore, a spatially prescriptive, postsynthesis, and low-entry method to modify phase in HfO 2 -based materials.

High-pressure high-temperature synthesis and characterization of B 10 C

The boron-rich boron carbide materials have been traditionally synthesized by adding boron powder to B 4 C material and subjecting it to hot pressing sintering for materials composition containing 8.8–20 at. % carbon in boron (composition range of B 10.4 C to B 4 C). Our study explores a synthesis route for B 10 C starting from high-purity boron and carbon and direct conversion under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions of 2000 °C and 6–8 GPa. Synthesis was verified via x-ray diffraction analysis, showing the conversion of the high-purity boron and carbon powder mixture into a hexagonal B 10 C structure (R-3m space group) with lattice parameters of a = b = 5.6115 Å and c = 12.197 Å. The concentration of boron was measured through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confirming the B 10 C ratio. The measured nanoindentation mean hardness of B 10 C was 40 GPa. Raman spectroscopy of the HPHT synthesized sample shows characteristic vibrational breathing modes of boron icosahedron and an additional intense band at a vibrational frequency of 380 cm –1 . This Raman band, which appears notably weaker in earlier studies and B 4 C samples, is assigned to the linear chain of B–B–B and attributed to the maximal incorporation of boron within the hexagonal structure.

Noncollinear polar magnet Fe 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 (H 2 O) 3 with inequivalent Fe 3+ sites

The emergence of novel magnetic states becomes more likely when the inversion symmetry of the crystal field, relative to the center between two spins, is broken. We propose that placing magnetic spins in inequivalent sites in a polar lattice can promote a realization of nontrivial magnetic states and associated magnetic properties. To test our hypothesis, we study Fe 2 (SeO 3 )(H 2 O) 3 as a model system that displays two distinct Fe(1) and Fe(2) magnetic sites in a polar structure (R3c space group). At low fields μ 0 H≤ 0.06 T, the material undergoes an antiferromagnetic ordering with T N1 = 77 K and a second transition at T N2 ≈ 4 K. At μ 0 H≥ 0.06 T and 74 K ≤T≤ 76 K, a positive entropy change of ∼0.12 mJ mol −1 K −1 can be associated with a metamagnetic transition to possibly nontrivial spin states. At zero field, Fe(1) is nearly fully ordered at T≈ 25 K, while Fe(2) features magnetic frustration down to T = 4 K. The magnetic ground state, a result corroborated by single-crystal neutron diffraction and 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, is a noncollinear antiparallel arrangement of ferrimagnetic Fe(1)–Fe(2) dimers along the c-axis. The results demonstrate that placing distinct magnetic sites in a polar crystal lattice can enable a new pathway to modifying spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom for unconventional magnetism.

Symmetry-projected spin-AGP methods applied to spin systems

Symmetry-projected wave function methods capture static correlation by breaking and restoring the symmetries of a system. In this article, we present the symmetry-projected spin antisymmetrized geminal power (spin-AGP) state projected onto space group symmetry as well as complex conjugation, spin-flip, and time-reversal symmetries. The method is benchmarked on the 1D XXZ model and the 2D J 1 − J 2 model with square and triangular lattices. Our results indicate that symmetry projection methods provide a powerful tool for frustrated spin systems.
