Flavor diagonal nucleon charges using clover fermions on MILC HISQ ensembles

We present lattice results for the flavor diagonal charges of the proton from the analysis of eight ensembles generated using 2+1+1-flavors of highly improved staggered quarks by the MILC Collaboration. The calculation includes all the needed connected and disconnected contributions to nucleon three-point function. For extracting matrix elements using fits to the spectral decomposition of these correlation functions, two strategies to remove excited state contributions are employed and compared. To renormalize these charges, the 2+1-flavor mixing matrix is calculated in the regularization independent symmetric momentum subtraction intermediate scheme on the lattice. The final results are presented in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at scale 2 GeV. The axial charges for the proton are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝐴}$ = 0.781⁢(25), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝐴}$ =−0.440⁢(39), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝐴}$ = −0.055⁢(9); the tensor charges are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝑇}$ = 0.782⁢(28), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝑇}$ = −0.195⁢(16), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝑇}$ = −0.0016⁢(12); and the scalar charges are $𝑔$$^{𝑢}_{𝑆}$ = 9.39⁢(88), $𝑔$$^{𝑑}_{𝑆}$ = 8.84⁢(93), and $𝑔$$^{𝑠}_{𝑆}$ = 0.37⁢(14). Results for the neutron are given by the 𝑢 ↔ 𝑑 interchange. Results for the sigma terms are 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | standard = 42⁢(6) MeV from a “standard” analysis and 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | 𝑁⁢𝜋 = 61⁢(6) MeV from an “𝑁⁢𝜋” analysis that includes the contributions of multihadron 𝑁⁢𝜋 excited states as motivated by chiral perturbation theory. Our preferred value 𝜎 𝜋⁢𝑁 | 𝑁⁢𝜋 is consistent with the phenomenological extraction from 𝜋 −𝑁 scattering data. The strangeness content of the proton, for which the standard analysis is appropriate, is 𝜎 𝑠 | standard = 35⁢(13) MeV.

Interplay between Mixed and Pure Exciton States Controls Singlet Fission in Rubrene Single Crystals

Singlet fission (SF) is a multielectron process in which one singlet exciton S converts into a pair of separated triplet excitons T. SF is widely studied as it may help overcome the Shockley−Queisser efficiency limit for semiconductor photovoltaic cells. To elucidate and control the SF mechanism, great attention has been given to the identification of intermediate states in SF materials, which often appear elusive due to the complexity and fast time scales of the SF process. Here, we apply 14 fs-1 ms transient absorption techniques to high-purity rubrene single crystals to disentangle the intrinsic fission dynamics from the effects of defects and grain boundaries and to identify reliably the fission intermediates. Our data demonstrates that above-gap excitation directly generates a hybrid vibronically assisted mixture of singlet state and triplet-pair multiexciton [S/TT], which rapidly (<100 fs) and coherently branches into pure singlet or triplet excitations. The relaxation of [S/TT] to S is followed by a relatively slow and temperature-activated (48 meV activation energy) incoherent fission process. The SF competing pathways and intermediates revealed here unify the observations and models presented in previous studies of SF in rubrene and offer alternative strategies for the development of SF-enhanced photovoltaic materials.

Tetragonal BaCoO 3 : A Co 4+ Ferromagnetic Mott Insulator

We report the stabilization of the metastable body-centered tetragonal (BCT) phase of BaCoO 3 (BCT-BaCoO 3 ) under high-pressure (15 GPa) and hightemperature (1200 °C) conditions using a mixture precursor. This double perovskite adopts the EuTiO 3 -type structure (space group I4/mcm), as confirmed by powder Xray diffraction and high-resolution STEM. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicates a predominant Co 4+ oxidation state without detectable oxygen vacancies. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal ferromagnetic ordering at T C ∼ 107 K, attributable to the BCT-BaCoO 3 phase. Above this temperature, the mixed-phase sample exhibits Curie−Weiss paramagnetism, a low-spin to high-spin crossover upon cooling, and a possible intermediate-spin state at elevated temperatures. Resistivity data indicates insulating behavior with weak magnetoresistance. DFT and DFT + DMFT calculations suggest that the insulating state originates from an orbitally selective transition sensitive to the nominal valence of the Co-d shell. The metastable BCT-BaCoO 3 phase cannot be retained in pure form at ambient pressure but can be stabilized by embedding it in a disordered mixture, offering a potential route to discover and preserve other high-pressure phases under ambient conditions.

Elucidation of Ultrafast Decay, Vibrational Beating, and Slow Decay Processes of Excited Azulene

Azulene’s nonradiative decay dynamics and kinetics from its singlet excited-states were studied using mixed-reference spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (MRSF-TDDFT) combined with trajectory surface-hopping nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) and Fermi’s golden rule (FGR) rate theory. The NAMD dynamics reproduce experimental observations that the S 1 → S 0 decay is accelerated and exhibits a crossover from mono- to biexponential kinetics with increasing excess vibrational energy. Minimum-energy-path analyses reveal a continuous S 1 /S 0 conical-intersection seam slightly above the S 1 minimum, providing readily accessible funnels. Time-resolved normal-mode projections reveal selective energy funneling into C–C stretching modes at 1272, 1528, and 1692 cm –1 . Constructive combinations of the latter two modes appear to promote rapid access to the conical-intersection seam, whereas their beating at ∼ 160 fs imposes a natural limit on the decrease of the decay time upon a further increase of excess energies, suggesting that their interference delays the decay. Here, the FGR rate calculation data for the S 1 → S 0 transition reaffirm that the nonradiative decay proceeds mainly near or through the conical intersection, rather than via simple nonadiabatic derivative coupling around the minimum of S 1 . On the other hand, the FGR rates indicate that S 2 decays predominantly to S 0 , as the S 2 –S 1 vibronic coupling is exceptionally weak, which serves as a primary cause for azulene’s characteristic anti-Kasha emission.

Disorder-induced magnetoelastic behaviors of MnTexSbyBi1-x-y alloys

This dataset contains input and output files from density functional theory (DFT) simulations used to study the disorder-induced magnetoelastic behaviors of MnTexSbyBi1-x-y (0 ≤ x + y ≤ 1) alloys and their binary end members MnTe, MnSb, and MnBi. The alloys adopt the hexagonal NiAs-type (nickeline) structure and span ternary (MnTexSb1-x, MnTexBi1-x, MnBixSb1-x), and quaternary compositions across the full MnTe–MnSb–MnBi composition triangle. For each alloy composition, the dataset provides DFT calculations in three magnetic configurations: A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM), C-type AFM, and ferromagnetic (FM). Every magnetic configuration folder contains the fully relaxed crystal structure (CONTCAR), VASP input parameters (INCAR), and the main VASP output file (OUTCAR), from which total electronic energies, Mn magnetic moments, lattice parameters, and percent volume changes between magnetic states are extracted. These data are used to construct compositional phase diagrams, evaluate thermodynamic stability (formability), and map magnetoelastic responses across the alloy space. For A-type AFM and FM configurations, additional data are provided as follows: (i) FORCE_CONSTANTS and thermal_properties.yaml files at the top level of A-type_AFM/ and FM/ folders — present only for compositions marked with an asterisk (*) in Table I of the main text. These are derived from Phonopy finite-displacement calculations on full disordered 128-atom supercells and provide vibrational free energy, entropy (Svib)contribution from explicit disorder calculations. (Table I of the associated main manuscript) (ii) A VCA/ subfolder within A-type_AFM/ and FM/, containing FORCE_CONSTANTS and thermal_properties.yaml from Virtual Crystal Approximation phonon calculations (without spin-orbit coupling). VCA data are available for all compositions and are used to estimate vibrational contributions to the Gibbs free energy across the full composition space. (iii) A SOC/ subfolder containing CONTCAR, INCAR, and OUTCAR from spin-orbit coupling calculations, providing relativistic corrections to electronic energies and lattice parameters (Tables S2–S3 of the SM, and Table I of the main manuscript). (iv) A SOC/VCA/ subfolder containing FORCE_CONSTANTS and thermal_properties.yaml from VCA phonon calculations performed within the SOC framework, combining relativistic and vibrational thermodynamic corrections. The computed properties are used to map the AFM–FM magnetic crossover near MnTe0.75Sb0.25, demonstrate disorder- and spin-induced phonon broadening, identify a semiconductor-to-metal crossover, and quantify the pronounced magnetoelastic volume response near the magnetic phase boundary.

Mixed Nd 4+/3+ and Cluster Magnetism in Hexagonal Perovskite 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ

Hexagonal perovskite oxides with 12R stacking host well-separated face-sharing octahedral metal trimers with short metal–metal distances, leading in some cases to large degrees of magnetic frustration and cluster magnetism. Introducing magnetic ions in proximity to these trimers can influence the degree of frustration and cluster magnetism, but the extent to which the magnetism can be tuned by varying neighboring metal cations remains an open question. In this work, we test the impacts of using Nd in proximity to Mn trimers in the hexagonal perovskite 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ . Given this stoichiometry, Nd should assume the 4+ oxidation state with a spin state of S = 1, which would be the first realization of Nd 4+ in an oxide environment. Through detailed bulk magnetic, X-ray absorption spectroscopic, and powder neutron diffraction (PND) measurements, we find that Nd 4+ is realized in this material, but there is also partial reduction to Nd 3+ , which is charge-balanced by O vacancies. Magnetometry measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T N ≈ 16 K, and PND measurements reveal a surprising collinear antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic space group Pc2/m (no. 10.49 in BNS notation), which has not previously been seen in this class of materials. Our results represent a comprehensive analysis of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ , showing the first observation of partial Nd 4+ in an oxide, and demonstrating that this structural class can host a broad range of magnetic structures which are not easily predicted based on compositional trends.
