Possible Mechanism(s) in the Photo-Magnetic Production of Enantiomer Excesses.

Among the multitude of organic compounds identified in carbonaceous chondrites are sugar acids ((HO-R)xCOOH), i.e., oxidized counterparts of the common aldehyde sugars (e.g., glyceraldehyde, erythrose, ribose, glucose, etc.). In the historical study of extraterrestrial compounds chiral analyses are particularly significant in origins-of-life studies. Chiral compounds are composed of two non-superposable mirror images or "enantiomers", analogous to a left and right hand. Such molecules are important in contemporary life because biological polymers (proteins, nucleic acids, etc.) are homochiral, i.e., their chiral monomers usually consist of only one of the two enantiomers. It has been shown, at least in one lab setting, that abiotic syntheses of significantly sized RNA polymers do not proceed if the monomers are present in racemic (50:50) amounts. The latter results may argue for, at least, significant enantiomer excesses in organic compounds before the origin of nucleic acids and life. Therefore, the finding that amino acids and sugar acids in carbonaceous chondrites possess enantiomeric excesses may aid in understanding one source of precursors to homochirality. Optically clear photo-polymerization resists for additive manufacturing of radiopaque parts

According to one embodiment, a method includes contacting a triiodobenzoic acid with an oxalyl chloride in a solvent whereby triiodobenzoyl chloride is formed, contacting diethanolamine with triiodobenzoyl chloride where triiodobenzoic diol amine is formed, and forming an acrylate of triiodobenzoic diol amine with acryloyl chloride where an organoiodine compound is formed. According to another embodiment, an optically clear photopolymer resist blend for additive manufacturing includes a radiopaque pre-polymer compound where the compound includes at least one of the following: iodine, bromine, tin, lead, or bismuth. The resist blend also includes a photoinitiator, a polymerization inhibitor, and a base pre-polymer.

Photo Doppler Velocimetry and Gamma/Neutron Yield Measurements of Godiva-IV Critical Assembly

The purpose of this experiment was to collect data for a dynamic benchmark of the Godiva-IV burst assembly. Data were taken using two different measurement systems. The gamma & neutron flux was measured using a calibrated, high-dynamic-range scintillator detector, the MHD-240. The measurement will be used to determine the total fission yield and alpha throughout the burst and shutdown sequence of Godiva-IV. The Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) measurement detected the surface motion of the burst assembly as a function of time. The combined data will be used in a multi-physics simulation of the Godiva-IV burst assembly.

Thermoelectric coatings for waste heat recovery and photo-thermal power

An energy harvesting system for collecting energy from sources of thermal energy that exist in the environment and convert the energy to electricity. The system has N-P junctions mounted on the outer surface of a conduit, pipe or flue. A hot medium flows through the conduit, pipe or flue. The p-n junctions operate as thermoelectric power generators. Heat absorbed at the p-n junctions increases the kinetic energy of charge carriers causing migration of the charge carriers. This thermally-driven migration of charge carriers is used to drive an electrical current in an external circuit.

Time-Resolved Radioluminescence of the Polynuclear Copper(I) Phosphor Cu4I6²–. Different Temporal responses to Photo, X-Ray, β-Ray and α-Particle Excitation

Described for the first time are the time-resolved radioluminescence (TRRL) properties of the highly luminescent copper(I) cluster Cu4I62– using X-ray, b-ray and a-particle excitation. The copper(I) phosphors are two crystalline salts of this anion, [Na2(18-crown-6)2(H2O)3][Cu4I6] (I) and [Li(benzo-15-crown-5)2(H2O)]2[Cu4I6] (II), that had been shown to display strong photoluminescence (PL) when excited with ultraviolet light. The integrated radioluminescence (RL) spectra observed when pulsed X-rays were used as the excitation source are virtually the same as the PL spectra under comparable conditions. These temporal RL spectra are invariant at all observation times indicating that the observed scintillation occurs from a common excited state (or set of excited states). When the TRRL is collected from excitation with a pulsed X-ray source, b-ray decay from 90Sr or a-decay from 244Cm, the longer components (>2 μs) of the TRRL displayed (in each case) lifetimes comparable to those of the strictly exponential PL decays recorded under pulsed laser UV excitation. However, at shorter observation times (< 500 ns), the RL decay deviated from the exponential model, indicating a markedly different temporal luminescence behavior when these materials were excited with pulsed high energy radiation. Furthermore, this effect was the most pronounced for the a-particle excitation. These results suggest that the absorption of a very high energy X-ray photon, b-ray or a-particle at a site within the crystalline solid leads to a high local density of electronic excited states and that coupling between these states provides an alternative channel for excited state decay. Given that the patterns observed

Time-Resolved Radioluminescence of the Copper(I) Cluster Cu4I62-. Temporal responses to Photo, X-ray, Beta-ray, and alpha-ray Excitation.

Described are time-resolved radioluminescence (TRRL) properties of the Cu(I) cluster Cu4I62– upon pulsed X-ray, β-ray or α-particle excitation. The longer (>2 μs) TRRL component displayed exponential decay comparable to pulsed UV excitation; however, temporal behavior at shorter times indicates that high local excited state density provides an alternative decay channel.

Evaluation of probabilistic photometric redshift estimation approaches for The Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST)

Many scientific investigations of photometric galaxy surveys require redshift estimates, whose uncertainty properties are best encapsulated by photometric redshift (photo-z) posterior probability density functions (PDFs). A plethora of photo-z PDF estimation methodologies abound, producing discrepant results with no consensus on a preferred approach. We present the results of a comprehensive experiment comparing twelve photo-z algorithms applied to mock data produced forLarge Synoptic Survey Telescope The Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (lsst) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (desc). By supplying perfect prior information, in the form of the complete template library and a representative training set as inputs to each code, we demonstrate the impact of the assumptions underlying each technique on the output photo-z PDFs. In the absence of a notion of true, unbiased photo-z PDFs, we evaluate and interpret multiple metrics of the ensemble properties of the derived photo-z PDFs as well as traditional reductions to photo-z point estimates. Additionally, we report systematic biases and overall over/under-breadth of the photo-z PDFs of many popular codes, which may indicate avenues for improvement in the algorithms or implementations. Furthermore, we raise attention to the limitations of established metrics for assessing photo-z PDF accuracy; though we identify the conditional density estimate (CDE) loss as a promising metric of photo-z PDF performance in the case where true redshifts are available but true photo-z PDFs are not, we emphasize the need for science-specific performance metrics.
