Photogrammetry using Apollo 16 orbital photography, part B

Discussion is made of the Apollo 15 and 16 metric and panoramic cameras which provided photographs for accurate topographic portrayal of the lunar surface using photogrammetric methods. Nine stereoscopic models of Apollo 16 metric photographs and three models of panoramic photographs were evaluated photogrammetrically in support of the Apollo 16 geologic investigations. Four of the models were used to collect profile data for crater morphology studies; three models were used to collect evaluation data for the frequency distributions of lunar slopes; one model was used to prepare a map of the Apollo 16 traverse area; and one model was used to determine elevations of the Cayley Formation. The remaining three models were used to test photogrammetric techniques using oblique metric and panoramic camera photographs. Two preliminary contour maps were compiled and a high-oblique metric photograph was rectified.

Remote sensing applications in agriculture and forestry. Applications of aerial photography and ERTS data to agricultural, forest and water resources management

Remote sensing techniques are being used in Minnesota to study: (1) forest disease detection and control; (2) water quality indicators; (3) forest vegetation classification and management; (4) detection of saline soils in the Red River Valley; (5) corn defoliation; and (6) alfalfa crop productivity. Results of progress, and plans for future work in these areas, are discussed.

Photogrammetric evaluation of Mariner 9 photography

Some attempts to produce, with an AP/C analytical plotter, stereo models using Mariner 9 pictures are reported. The first attempt using geometrically uncorrected mission test video system (MTVS) imagery failed; the second, using corrected reduced data record (RDR) pictures also failed, probably because they were reconstructed through a vidicon display which introduces additional distortion. By using images obtained from RDR tape data through the Optronics Photowrite device, models were successfully obtained.

Significant results from Apollo 14 lunar orbital photography.

Apollo 14 obtained 950 photographs from lunar orbit using the Hasselblad and Hycon cameras. The photographs reveal a number of new geologic features as well as previously unrecognized details of the morphology, structure, and stratigraphy of lunar surface units. The primary result is the verification of the extensive role of volcanism in the formation and modification of the lunar highlands, especially on the far side. Terra volcanism appears to be manifest in the formation of (1) constructional units of hilly and furrowed materials of regional extent as in the Kant Plateau in the central near-side highlands and northwest of the crater Pasteur near the eastern limb of the moon; (2) somewhat viscous lava flows and pools associated with fracture systems and/or what appear to be volcanic craters; (3) craters, crater chains, and irregular depressions, particularly on the lunar far side. The first photographs of a flow channel, a leveed sinuous rille that apparently originated by lava flowage on the surface, were obtained by Apollo 14. Another first is a high-resolution photograph of the interior of what appears to be the youngest lunar crater yet photographed in the 20- 40-km size range.

Circular carrier-frequency photography for observing phase objects.

A circular grating is photographed through a phase object which deforms the image of the grating lines. By super-imposing these deformed lines with a master grating on photographic film, moire patterns are observed. These patterns are interpreted as fringes of constant radial derivative.

Multicolor photography of Jupiter.

Representative multicolor Jupiter photographs taken with wideband filters in 1965 and 1970 are discussed. Attention is given to the Red Spot and to the differences in methane absorption above the clouds. A table of observational data and white-and-black reproductions of representative photographs with interpretation are included.

Narrow-band photography of Jupiter and Saturn.

An IR-sensitive vidicon was used in the 1 to 2 mu region, with narrow-bandwidth filters, for Jupiter photographs taken in April, 1971, and Saturn photographs taken in December, 1970. The changes in limb darkening and surface details observed at different wavelengths are discussed. The 37 Jupiter photographs and the 38 Saturn photographs are included.
