AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xTL NEON Toolik (TOOL) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Toolik field site is located in a remote wilderness area at the Toolik Field Station which is on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The area is underlain by continuous permafrost, which exerts a major influence on hydrology and the distribution, structure, and function of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Because of its location between the Brooks Range and the coastal plain, the vegetation and soils at TOOL are representative of much of the Alaskan foothills tundra. This terrestrial field site is collocated with NEON’s Toolik Lake aquatic site. The closest city, Fairbanks, Alaska is 400 miles away. The Dalton Highway (also known as the Haul Road or Pipeline Road), which traverses the middle of the state from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, provides access to the area.

In situ and laboratory evidence for high electrical anisotropy in marine gas hydrate

Marine gas hydrate is electrically resistive compared to the surrounding hydrate-free formation, a property that is exploited in borehole logging and also by marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) surveys. Well logging shows that hydrate can be electrically anisotropic, with vertical resistivities up to 10 times higher than horizontal resistivities, although the use of logging tools capable of measuring anisotropy is the exception rather than the rule. Marine CSEM methods are well known to be sensitive to anisotropy in seafloor sediments, and, for example, we have observed anisotropies of more than an order of magnitude using CSEM to map offshore relic permafrost.

Revolutionizing observations and predictability of Arctic system dynamics through next-generation dense, heterogeneous and intelligent wireless sensor networks with embedded AI

The Arctic region is a complex and dynamic system, where changes in temperature and partitioning between water in solid, liquid and vapor phase are fundamentally reshaping hydro-biogeochemical fluxes from the bedrock to the atmosphere. The increasing temperature and frequency of extreme heat, precipitation and fire events (Wang et al., 2017; Meredith et al., 2019) have critical consequences for the Arctic ecosystems and people, as well as for the global climate system. Although many observational and remote sensing activities have been on-going, detailed ecosystem processes – particularly related to controls on and impacts of permafrost thaw – are difficult to detect or measure. To improve the understanding and prediction of these extreme events and their consequences, we need a revolution in the way we collect ground-based observations from hillslope to pan-Arctic scales and couple them with satellite imagery and models to deliver rich, actionable, and scale-appropriate data.

Arctic Ice Nucleation Sampling during MOSAiC (INPMOSAIC2) Field Campaign Report

The accelerated rate of warming in the Arctic is of great concern due to potential impacts that include release of greenhouse gases from permafrost, melting glacial ice contributing to sea level rise, and declining sea ice cover exposing the darker ocean surface. These processes induce positive feedbacks and contribute to further warming that affects climate globally. Clouds play a crucial role in regulating the energy reaching the sea ice and snow surfaces, but the magnitude of their effects on surface temperature is not well constrained in the Arctic. Aerosols are an important contributor by serving as seeds for cloud particle formation, but even less is known about their overall impact and origin. In particular, aerosols that serve as ice nucleating particles (INPs) are vastly understudied, especially above the central Arctic Ocean. However, INPs likely play a significant role in arctic mixed-phase cloud (AMPC) microphysics and the resulting impacts of such clouds on the surface energy budget over the sea ice.
