Investigation of Contact Properties and Device Performance for Bifacial Double-Side Textured Silicon Solar Cells With Polysilicon Based Passivating Contacts

We investigate the impact of the surface morphology on the contact properties of phosphorus doped poly-Si layers. If the poly-Si layer on a textured surface remains intact after high-temperature metallization using a fire-through (FT) silver (Ag) paste, the J0,metal is not expected to increase significantly while the specific contact resistivity can improve with a textured surface. The contact properties of the FT Ag contacts to n+ poly-Si deposited on both textured and planar surfaces are investigated by measuring and evaluating ρc and J0,metal. The reasons for differences in contact resistance and recombination are further investigated with SEM imaging. Solar cells with n-type polysilicon based passivating contacts on the rear side are fabricated and characterized. The scientific approach used, and the insights presented in this work, help to understand the mechanisms and behavior of screen-printed and fired-through contacts to polysilicon layers deposited onto textured silicon surfaces.

Development and Validation of Passive Yaw in the Open-Source WEC-Sim Code: Preprint

A passive yaw implementation is developed, validated, and explored for the Wave Energy Converter Simulator (WEC-Sim), an open-source wave energy converter modeling tool that works within MATLAB/Simulink. The Reference Model 5 (RM5) is selected for this investigation, and a WEC-Sim model of the device is modified to allow yaw motion. A boundary element method (BEM) code was used to calculate the excitation force coefficients for a range of wave headings. An algorithm was implemented in WEC-Sim to determine the equivalent wave heading from a body’s instantaneous yaw angle and interpolate the appropriate excitation coefficients to ensure the correct time-domain excitation force. This approach is able to determine excitation force for a body undergoing large yaw displacement. For the mathematically simple case of regular wave excitation, the dynamic equation was integrated numerically and found to closely approximate the results from this implementation in WEC-Sim. A case study is presented for the same device in irregular waves. In this case, computation time is increased by 32x when this interpolation is performed at every time step. To reduce this expense, a threshold yaw displacement can be set to reduce the number of interpolations performed. A threshold of 0.01 was found to increase computation time by only 22x without significantly affecting time domain results. Similar amplitude spectra for yaw force and displacements are observed for all threshold values less than or equal to 1, for which computation time is only increased by 2.2x.

Halbach-array levitating passive magnetic bearing configuration

Novel configurations of levitating passive magnetic bearing configurations are described. Such configurations can be used for the precise control of the magnitude and sign of the bearing stiffness, thereby facilitating the overall design of the system in ways that are not possible with conventional attractive or repelling bearing elements.

Microwave diagnostics and passive sensors for pipeline, well-bore, and boiler-tube monitoring

Materials, methods of making, and methods of using an integrated wireless detector for real time interrogating metallic tubular structures comprising: an RF patch antenna; a passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor; and data analytic methodologies. An embodiment relates to interrogating a metallic structure having a uniform cross section using an antenna which launches electromagnetic radiation. A sensor may be located within the structure is configured to re-emit electromagnetic radiation modified depending on parameters for which the sensor has been functionalized. An antenna may receive radiation as modified by the sensor, or may receive the transmitted or backscattered radiation directly, without use of a sensor. The antenna then communicates wirelessly with an interrogator providing data which may be used to understand the operational status of the structure in real-time.

System and method for passive assay of holdup deposits in nuclear piping

Disclosed herein are a method, apparatus, and software for passive, non-destructive assay of holdup deposits in nuclear piping by in-pipe apparatus. A detector deployed within a pipe is collimated to observe radiation impinging radially inward from decay of deposits that lie on the pipe wall. A radiation detector is centered in the pipe and collimated by a pair of coaxial shielding discs disposed equidistant from the detector. This arrangement causes radiation from a truncated cylinder of pipe deposit within a field of regard to impinge on the detector, while precluding radiation emanating from pipe walls beyond the field of regard from reaching the detector. Hence, observations are unique to a known cylindrical length of pipe. The detector assembly is translated through pipes by an autonomous mobile robotic apparatus. Computer software controls the robotic apparatus, logs data, and post-processes to assay deposits.

Nanoparticle Surface Passivation Strategies to Improve the Cycle and Calendar Lifetime of Silicon Anodes in Standard Carbonate Electrolytes

Silicon Lithium alloys (SiLix) as the anode active material in a Li-Ion battery configuration offer possible energy densities paralleled only by pure lithium metal. However, the extreme mechanical deformation of alloying and dealloying SiLix through charge/discharge cycles paired with the highly reactive interface of SiLix which generates an interfacial layer known as the solid-electrolyte-interphase are large barriers to industrial adoption of high-silicon-content negative electrodes. Moreover, these challenges are magnified when the thickness of the electrode is brought to relevant levels (>3 mg/cm2). Here, I describe our efforts to address these challenges by utilizing single-nanometer-scale silicon nanoparticles to reduce capacity fade related to mechanical failure. I also detail our efforts to modify the silicon surface through interfacial chemical engineering strategies to passivate the silicon surface. This development three different majority silicon electrodes (50-74 wt%) to achieve cycle capacity retention of greater than 73% through 1000 charge/discharge cycles against capacity-matched NMC-based cathodes and calendar lifetimes greater than one year. This research is a part of the multi-national lab Silicon Consortium Project.

DEMONSTRATION OF A PASSIVE CONDENSER LOOP

Building HVAC consumes significant amount of energy. It is estimated that about 7% of the total electricity consumed by water cooled chiller is used to drive the condenser water pump. A passive condenser loop is developed to curb this energy consumption by replacing the open pumped loop to a closed loop thermosyphon system. The loop thermosyphon uses waste heat to circulate the condenser fluid, eliminating the electrical pumping power requirement and the large circulation pump. Since it is a closed loop, it also reduces the maintenance cost and enables both wet and dry cooling modes. A demonstration unit with a riser about 40 feet (12.2 meters) tall is fabricated and tested at powers up to 25 kW. The result has successfully showed that the loop thermosyphon is able to transfer the heat near isothermally (∆T < 0.4C) over the long distance without the need of any pump and consuming any electricity.
