Optical Modeling of Polysilicon: TOPCon PV

Determine how film thickness changes with different deposition methods. Analyze relationship between film thickness and optical constants. The deposition rate of intrinsic polysilicon is higher during initial deposition then begins to slow down as deposition time increases. Longer depositions of polysilicon are more crystalline in structure than shorter depositions. N-type doping of polysilicon is more crystalline in structure than p-type doping, despite similar film thicknesses.

Boron Phosphide Films by Reactive Sputtering: Searching for a P‐Type Transparent Conductor

Abstract With an indirect band gap in the visible and a direct band gap at a much higher energy, boron phosphide (BP) holds promise as an unconventional p‐type transparent conductor. This work reports on reactive sputtering of amorphous BP films, their partial crystallization in a P‐containing annealing atmosphere, and extrinsic doping by C and Si. The highest hole concentration to date for p‐type BP (5 × 10 20 cm −3 ) is achieved using C doping under B‐rich conditions. Furthermore, bipolar doping is confirmed to be feasible in BP. An anneal temperature of at least 1000 °C is necessary for crystallization and dopant activation. Hole mobilities are low and indirect optical transitions are stronger than that predicted by theory. Low crystalline quality probably plays a role in both cases. High figures of merit for transparent conductors might be achievable in extrinsically doped BP films with improved crystalline quality.

Chemical and structural origin of hole states in yttria-stabilized zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has important electrochemical applications as a fast oxygen ion conductor and is the state-of-the-art electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel/electrolyzer cells. While much attention has been paid to the fast oxygen ion conduction, the electronic conductivity and especially hole carriers are not well understood, yet essential for the electrochemical stability, conduction kinetics and microstructural evolution in YSZ. The present work uses first-principles calculations to illustrate the chemical nature and local structural features of hole states in oxidized YSZ. Three types of hole states have been identified, including delocalized hole states on normal oxygen ions, localized hole states on special oxygen ions with extreme local structures, and peroxide-like groups. In conclusion, the implications on various experimental observations are discussed.

Thermoelectric properties of BiSbTe-type alloys prepared by chill-casting and cryo-milling

The thermoelectric properties of Bi x Sb 1-x Te 3 processed through milling have been extensively studied with varied results that needs to be rationalized. Since cryo-milling is a relatively cleaner milling process compared to other milling processes, in this study we explore this technique to reduce the particle size prior to compaction to get an insight into the thermoelectric properties. We first report the results of cryomilled BiSbTe 3 compacted by spark plasmas sintering (SPS) process and show that milling leads to a change in transport behavior from ‘p’ to ‘n’ type similar to that reported for Bi 2 Te 3 . It is shown that the defects induced by milling is responsible for this change in materials behavior. We further study the effect of change in Bi to Sb ratio and excess tellurium on the thermoelectric properties when processed through cryo-milling as well as casting using a chilled copper block. Excess tellurium leads to a microstructure containing a fraction of layered eutectic that gets further fragmented during cryo-milling. Although the Seebeck coefficient does not change significantly, reflecting the cleanliness of the process, the thermal conductivity changes during hot compaction leading to an improvement of ZT. However, a comparison of all the reported results does not reveal any systematics in thermoelectric properties reflecting the difficulties with these materials.

From Design to Device: Challenges and Opportunities in Computational Discovery of p -Type Transparent Conductors

A high-performance p -type transparent conductor (TC) does not yet exist but could lead to advances in a wide range of optoelectronic applications and enable new architectures for, e.g., next-generation photovoltaic (PV) devices. High-throughput computational material screenings have been a promising approach to filter databases and identify new p -type TC candidates and some of these predictions have been experimentally validated. However, most of these predicted candidates do not have experimentally achieved properties on par with n -type TCs used in solar cells and therefore have not yet been used in commercial devices. Thus, there is still a significant divide between transforming predictions into results that are actually achievable in the laboratory and an even greater lag in scaling predicted materials into functional devices. In this perspective, we outline some of the major disconnects in this materials discovery process—from scaling computational predictions into synthesizable crystals and thin films in the laboratory to scaling laboratory-grown films into real-world solar devices—and share insights to inform future strategies for TC discovery and design. Hierarchical Hybrid Multifunctional Materials through Interface Engineering

This project focuses on the development of stimuli-responsive hybrid multifunctional materials. We place emphasis on the design, synthesis, structural characterization, evaluation of functional properties (electronic, thermal and optical) of several (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS hierarchical bulk composites between Cu 2 Se, a narrow band gap semiconductor (NBGS), with a range of wider band gap semiconductors (WBGS) such as CuMSe 2 (M = Al, Ga, In, Fe, Cr) and Cu 4 TiSe 4 . Cu2Se is a well-studied NBGS with excellent thermoelectric properties (high electrical conductivity, large thermopower, etc.) while CuMSe 2 and Cu 4 TiSe 4 are high performance solar absorber materials (large band gap, large absorption coefficient, etc.). Our primary objectives are (i) to demonstrate the ability to integrate dissimilar functional properties such as large optical absorption coefficient and high electronic conductivity, within (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS composite; and (ii) to establish the correlation between the hierarchical structural entanglement of Cu 2 Se with WBGS (CuMSe 2 or Cu 4 TiSe 4 ) phase, the interactions between native electronic defects within the coexisting phases in the resulting (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS bulk composites , and the impacts on their electronic conductivity, thermal transport and optical properties.
