Innovative design of composite structures: Axisymmetric deformations of unsymmetrically laminated cylinders loaded in axial compression

The study focuses on the axisymmetric deformation response of unsymmetrically laminate cylinders loaded in axial compression by known loads. A geometrically nonlinear analysis is used. Though buckling is not studied, the deformations can be considered to be the prebuckling response. Attention is directed at three 16 layer laminates: a (90 sub 8/0 sub 8) sub T; a (0 sub 8/90 sub 8) sub T and a (0/90) sub 4s. The symmetric laminate is used as a basis for comparison, while the two unsymmetric laminates were chosen because they have equal but opposite bending-stretching effects. Particular attention is given to the influence of the thermally-induced preloading deformations that accompany the cool-down of any unsymmetric laminate from the consolidation temperature. Simple support and clamped boundary conditions are considered. It is concluded that: (1) The radial deformations of an unsymmetric laminate are significantly larger than the radial deformations of a symmetric laminate, although for both symmetric and unsymmetric laminates the large deformations are confined to a boundary layer near the ends of the cylinder; (2) For this nonlinear problem the length of the boundary layer is a function of the applied load; (3) The sign of the radial deformations near the supported end of the cylinder depends strongly on the sense (sign) of the laminate asymmetry; (4) For unsymmetric laminates, ignoring the thermally-induced preloading deformations that accompany cool-down results in load-induced deformations that are under predicted; and (5) The support conditions strongly influence the response but the influence of the sense of asymmetry and the influence of the thermally-induced preloading deformations are independent of the support conditions.

A digital computer study of the buckling of shallow spherical caps and truncated hemispheres

A study of the buckling of thin shells was conducted using a digital computer program for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of arbitrarily loaded shells of revolution. The objective was an evaluation of the program's applicability to bifurcation buckling and imperfection sensitivity analysis. Clamped spherical caps under pressure loading and clamped truncated hemispheres under axial tension were investigated. Buckling loads were determined for axisymmetric and nearly axisymmetric loads and are compared with previously published analytical results based on geometric imperfections.

Unsteady flow through compressor stages

The application of the nonsteady Lax-Wendroff technique to problems with asymptotically periodic solution which offers a potentially powerful method for the investigation of the interaction of rotating and stationary blade rows in turbomachinery is reported. A technique for specifying boundary conditions with phase lag was developed to accomplish this. A complete nonlinear analysis is carried out numerically to determine the entire flow field without recourse to the assumption of small disturbances of linear equations which underlie the previous acoustic theories. The result, obtained for the case of equal number of rotor and stator blades shows that transonic flow can be handled without difficulty. In addition, the program is not limited with regard to blade thickness, camber or loading. Extension of this method to incorporate viscous wakes and to analysis of fully three dimensional configuration is feasible, and would greatly expand its utility in practical applications.

Advanced study of video signal processing in low signal to noise environments

A nonlinear analysis of a multifilter phase-lockloop (MPLL) by using the method of harmonic balance is presented. The particular MPLL considered has a low-pass filter and a band-pass filter in parallel. An analytic expression for the relationship between the input signal phase deviation and the phase error is determined for sinusoidal FM in the absence of noise. The expression is used to determine bounds on the proper operating region for the MPLL and to investigate the jump phenomenon previously observed. From these results the proper modulation index, modulating frequency, etc. used for the design of a MPLL are determined. Data for the loop unlock boundary obtained from the theoretical expression are compared to data obtained from analog computer simulations of the MPLL.

Nonlinear interaction of a fast magnetogasdynamic shock with a tangential discontinuity

A basic problem, which is of considerable interest in geoastrophysical applications of magnetogasdynamics, is the nonlinear interaction of a fast shock (S sub f) with a tangential discontinuity (T). The problem is treated for an arbitrary S sub f interacting with an arbitrary T under the assumption that in the frame of reference in which S sub f and T are at rest, the flow is superfast on both sides of T, and that a steady flow develops. As a result of the nonlinear analysis a flow pattern is obtained consisting of the incident discontinuities S sub f 1 and T2 and a transmitted fast shock S sub f 3, the modified tangential discontinuity T4 and a reflected fast shock S sub f 5 or fast rarefaction wave R sub f 5. The results are discussed in terms of seven significant similarity parameters. In addition special cases like changes in magnetic field direction only, changes in desnity or velocity shear only etc. are discussed.

A double-loop tracking system.

A nonlinear analysis which can be used to assess certain statistical characteristics of double-loop tracking systems is presented. It takes into account the mutual coupling effects of the loops in the system. Two approaches are taken to obtain steady-state probability density functions (pdf's) of the system phase errors. From these pdf's, important system performance statistics, e.g., the phase-error variances, can be calculated, thus illustrating the application and usefulness of the analysis. The analysis is applied to a satellite transponder as an example.

Nonlinearity of Helmholtz resonators

Consideration of the nonlinear damping of pressure oscillations by means of acoustic liners consisting of a perforated plate communicating with a volume or of individual Helmholtz resonators. A nonlinear analysis leads to a modified first-order theory; in particular, some second-order damping effects (due to the formation of jets through the orifices) are considered, while other less important damping effects (of second order) are neglected. The effect of the vena contracta in the orifice flow is also taken into account, and the conditions of maximum damping are discussed. A determination is made of the orifice velocity, the cavity pressure, the admittance coefficient, the resistance, and the reactance, and good agreement is found between the theoretically determined resistance and orifice velocity and the pertinent experimental data.

Estimation of nonlinear aerodynamic derivatives of a variable geometry fighter aircraft from flight data

This paper is concerned with the estimation of stability and control parameters of a high performance fighter aircraft from data obtained from high angle of attack flight. The estimation process utilizes a maximum likelihood algorithm derived for the case of a nonlinear aerodynamic force and moment model. The aircraft used was a high speed variable sweep heavy weight fighter with twin vertical tails. Comparisons of results from the nonlinear analysis are made with linear theory and wind tunnel results when available.

Effects of substrate deformation and sip thickness on tile/sip interface stresses for shuttle thermal protection

A nonlinear analysis was used to study the effects of substrate deformation characteristics and strain isolator pad (SIP) thickness on TILE/SIP interface stresses for the space shuttle thermal protection system. The configuration analyzed consisted of a 5.08 cm thick, 15.24 cm square tile with a 12.7 cm square SIP footprint bordered by a 1.27 cm wide filler bar and was subjected to forces and moments representative of a 20.7 kPa aerodynamic shock passing over the tile. The SIP stress deflection curves were obtained after a 69 kPa proof load and 100 cycles conditioning at 55 kPa. The TILE/SIP interface stresses increase over flat substrate values for zero to peak substrate deformation amplitudes up to 0.191 cm by up to a factor of nearly five depending on deformation amplitude, half wave length, and location. Stresses for a 0.23 cm thick SIP found to be up to 60 percent greater than for a 0.41 cm thick SIP for identical loads and substrate deformation characteristics. A simplified method was developed for approximating the substrate location which produces maximum TILE/SIP interface stresses.

Optimal transfer between close near-circular orbits

A nonlinear analysis is carried out for the optimal transfer between close near-circular noncoplanar orbits with no limit on time. The degeneracy of the linear analyses of Marec and Edelbaum is, thereby, removed and with the aid of a generalized Jacobi test, it is established that the minimum-impulse transfer requires, at most, three impulses. A field of extremals is generated in an orbit element space starting with the initial state and anticipated adjoint variables and integrating these variables by using the optimal thrust control law that maximizes the variational Hamiltonian. The nonoptimality of any four-impulse strategy is determined numerically by observing the reflection of every extremal from either an envelope (conjugate point test) or a switching surface on or before the application of the fourth impulse. This test is carried out in Regions I, II, and III of Marec, as well as the special transition region of Breakwell near the boundary of Region III.

Nonlinear and tangent stiffness of imperfect beam columns

A curved member under axial load is analyzed using beam column theory to determine nonlinear response and the tangent stiffness associated with small displacements from the nonlinear state. Such a result is suitable for incorporation into a general nonlinear analysis using a corotational coordinate system to describe the rigid body type motion of individual members. The method is applied to buckling problems. Several examples are given to show the accuracy of the method.
