Ultrasonic scanning of multilayer ceramic chip capacitors

Ultrasonic scanning is compared to neutron radiography and scanning laser acoustic microscopy (SLAM). Data show that SLAM and ultrasonic scanning evaluations are in good agreement. There is poor agreement between N-ray and both ultrasonic techniques because N-ray is insensitive to all but the grossest delaminations. Statistical analysis show a good correlation between ultrasonic scanning and destructive physical analysis.

High-frequency measurements of multilayer ceramic capacitors

A resonant coaxial transmission line, short circuited at one end and open circuited at the other, whose fundamental resonant frequency and Q factor are known, is perturbed with a test capacitor connected either in series at the shorted end of the line, or in shunt at the open end. Measuring the Q factor of the system with the delta f technique yields the effective series resistance, capacitance, and the Q factor of the test specimen. This method of measurement has the advantage that there are no adjustable elements to alter circuit conditions in an unprescribed way, the only variable is the frequency which can be measured with an uncertainty of less than 1 ppm, the loss of the line as a function of frequency is quite predictable, and the Q factor of the line can be made sufficiently high to support accurate measurements of low loss capacitors.

Transport velocity transformation - A convenient method for performance analysis of multilayer solar cell structure

It is noted that in the case of low-level injection, space-charge quasi-neutrality, and spatially constant material parameters (including an electrostatic field), the individual layer can be treated analytically and the basic solar cell performance parameters can be evaluated from three equations. The first equation represents the transformation of the transport velocity across the layer from the other layer boundary. The second establishes the light-generated current output from the layer interface, under the influence of the transport velocities and minority-carrier density at both layer boundaries and of bulk recombination. The third equation describes the flow of these carriers across other layers. The power of the approach is considered to lie in its facility for analysis of the solar cell's performance layer by layer, giving a clear picture of the individual layer's influence on cell efficiency.

Application of a Gaussian multilayer diffusion model to characterize dispersion of vertical HCl column density in rocket exhaust clouds

Solid rocket exhaust cloud dispersion cases, based on seven meteorological regimes for overland advection in the Cape Canaveral, Florida, area, are examined for launch vehicle environmental impacts. They include a space shuttle case and all seven meteorological cases for the Titan 3, which exhausts 60% less HC1. The C(HC1) decays are also compared with recent in cloud peak HC1 data from eight Titan 3 launches. It is stipulated that while good overall agreement provides validation of the model, its limitations are considerable and a dynamics model is needed to handle local convective situations.

Thin metal film and multilayers experiment (A0138-3)

The sources of degradation of in state of the art and newly developed components and testing the usefulness of the concept of storing experiment samples in dry nitrogen under launch and space vacuum conditions during reentry mission phase were investigated. Ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) experiments suffer degradations during space missions of even 1 month duration. It is suggested that the degradation is due to condensation of outgassing products, followed by solar induced polymerization, however, penetrating charged particles are also known to produce volume effects. Degradation may also start immediately after manufacturing of the component due to oxidation, moisture, or chemical corrosion by atmospheric constituents such as CO2 and SO2. When the filters are used as windows for gas absorption cells or gas filters, or when they define the instrumental bandwidth by themselves. The effects of mechanical degradation by thermal cycling and/or dust may cause a dramatic impact.

Stress analysis of multilayered plates around circular holes

The elasticity problem for a thick plate consisting of two bonded dissimilar homogeneous layers is considered. It is assumed that the plate is infinite, contains a circular hole, and is subjected to axisymmetric external loads. A technique suitable to the formulation of three-dimensional boundary value problems is introduced and applied to the three-dimensional elasticity solution of an infinite plate with a hole. The effect of Poisson's ratio is studied in some detail, and the axisymmetric problem of a laminated plate is solved. The stresses at the interface are calculated and are observed to become unbounded at the hole boundary. An approximate treatment of the singularity is presented and the stress intensity factors are computed. Some of the results are compared with those found from the finite element method. The agreement between the two sets with regard to trend and magnitude is found to be very satisfactory.

Ultrasonic evaluation of mechanical properties of thick, multilayered, filament wound composites

A preliminary investigation is conducted to define capabilities and limitations of ultrasonic and acousto-ultrasonic measurements related to mechanical properties of filament wound graphite/epoxy composite structures. The structures studied are segments of filament wound cylinders formed of multiple layers of hoop and helical windings. The segments consist of 24 to 35 layers and range from 3.02 to 3.34 cm in wall thickness. The resultant structures are anisotropic, heterogeneous, porous, and highly attenuating to ultrasonic frequencies greater than 1 MHz. The segments represent structures to be used for space shuttle booster cases. Ultrasonic velocity and acousto-ultrasonic stress wave factor measurement approaches are discussed. Correlations among velocity, density, and porosity, and between the acousto-ultrasonic stress wave factor and interlaminar shear strength are presented.

Computer modelling of aluminum-gallium arsenide/gallium arsenide multilayer photovoltaics

The modeled cascade cells offer an alternative to conventional series cascade designs that require a monolithic intercell ohmic contact. Selective electrodes provide a simple means of fabricating three-terminal devices, which can be configured in complementary pairs to circumvent the attendant losses and fabrication complexities of intercell ohmic contacts. Moreover, selective electrodes allow incorporation of additional layers in the upper subcell which can improve spectral response and increase radiation tolerance. Realistic simulations of such cells operating under one-sun AMO conditions show that the seven-layer structure is optimum from the standpoint of beginning-of-life efficiency and radiation tolerance. Projected efficiencies exceed 26 percent. Under higher concentration factors, it should be possible to achieve efficiencies beyond 30 percent. However, to simulate operation at high concentration will require a model for resistive losses. Overall, these devices appear to be a promising contender for future space applications.

Free surfaces and multilayer interfaces in the GaAs/AlAs system

Semiempirical potential energy functions have been utilized for a variety of calculations in the Ga-Al-As system. Surface energies have been calculated for several orientations of GaAs. Ledge energies for the GaAs (0 0 -1) (As-terminated) surface show long-range interaction effects with the ledge energy increasing with spacing. GaAs (001)/AlAs (001) superlattices have been simulated for a range of interlayer spacings with the excess interfacial energy per interlayer increasing from 5 erg/sq cm at an interlayer spacing of 1 molecular layer (5.8 A) to 50 erg/sq cm at an interlayer spacing of 18 molecular layers (103.8 A).

Distributed structural control using multilayered piezoelectric actuators

A method of segmenting piezoelectric sensors and actuators is proposed which can preclude the currently experienced cancelation of sensor signals, or the reduction of actuator effectiveness, due to the integration of the property undergoing measurement or control. The segmentation method is demonstrated by a model developed for beam structures, to which multiple layers of piezoelectric materials are attached. A numerical study is undertaken of increasing active and passive damping of a beam using the segmented sensors and actuators over unsegmented sensors and actuators.

Multilayer sea ice in the Arctic - Model- and satellite-derived

The behavior of sea ice is a strong function of ice strength which, in the central Arctic, depends on the relative fractions of multiyear and first-year ice coverage. A dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model has been configured to include both multiyear and first-year ice. The model has been run for a 7-year period, 1979-1985, for which a satellite microwave record of multiyear sea ice coverage is available. The simulated concentrations of multiyear ice are slightly higher than the satellite-derived concentrations, although the total coverage of simulated multiyear ice agrees well with the satellite-derived coverage. Both the simulated and the satellite-derived coverages in the early 1980s show large interannual variations that represent potentially large perturbations in the mass balance of Arctic pack ice. These fluctuations are generally consistent in the model and satellite data, and they are generally consistent with year-to-year differences in the large-scale wind forcing. In at least some cases the wintertime distribution of multiyear ice is influenced by the pattern of ice drift as far back as the previous summer. The late December coverage of multiyear ice in the Alaskan region appears to foreshadow summer ice conditions in the same region. The short-term response to an intense synoptic system is considerably larger in the satellite data than in the model results.

Distributed structural control using multilayered piezoelectric actuators. I - Analysis

Timoshenko beam theory is applied to beams with multiple layers of piezoelectric material attached. The model is developed using a Hamiltonian approach, and includes a model of the external electrical circuits to which the piezoelectric layers are attached, as well as a complete set of boundary conditions. The resulting model is then formulated in state space, and compared to a state space model of the standard Timoshenko beam.

Design and analysis of aspherical multilayer imaging X-ray microscope

Spherical Schwarzschild microscopes for soft X-ray applications in microscopy and projection lithography employ two concentric spherical mirrors that are configured such that the third-order spherical aberration and coma are zero. Based on incoherent, sine-wave MTF calculations, the object-plane resolution of a magnification-factor-20 microscope is presently analyzed as a function of object height and numerical aperture of the primary for several spherical Schwarzschild, conic, and aspherical two-mirror microscope configurations.
