Continuous flow photochemical synthesis of metal–ceramic composite microparticles

We developed a UV-assisted microfluidic system to synthesize FeCrAl–Al 2 O 3 composite microparticles for additive manufacturing. Here, the system ensures precise particle size, morphology, and elemental distribution control. Increasing the dispensing pressure while keeping the oil flow rate constant resulted in larger microparticles. Laser fusing revealed FeCrAl and Al 2 O 3 phases, showing their potential as feedstocks for 3D printed heterogeneous materials such as FeCrAl/Al 2 O 3 bi-phase materials.

A versatile and practical synthesis of oxygen evolution catalysts

State-of-the-art OER (oxygen evolution reaction) catalyst syntheses require the use of expensive metals (i.e. Ir) with complex and time-consuming synthetic routes, difficulty in control, and impractical yields. Although some reported catalysts show improved performance (i.e. activity, stability, lowering Ir content with Ru), their synthesis is costly and not viable for scale-up. Here we demonstrate a practical, reliable, and scalable one-pot synthesis method for OER catalysts based on borohydride reduction to quickly yield >100 mg of Ir, Ru, and IrRu nanoparticles (1.6 ± 0.2 nm) with outstanding batch-to-batch consistency. Both mono- and bi-metallic compositions exhibit a metal-core/metal-oxide-shell nanoparticle structure. We further demonstrate the versatility of this method by incorporating earth-abundant yttrium, resulting in a catalyst with improved precious metal utilization for OER. This method serves as a robust platform for generating ultrasmall (<2 nm) multi-metal particles useful for electrocatalysis research.

Electronic conductivity in metal-graphene composites: the role of disordered carbon structures, defects, and impurities

Abstract This paper explores the transport properties of aluminum-carbon composite material via ab initio methods. Interfacial and electronic dynamics of the aluminum-graphene interface structure were investigated using models of amorphous graphene added to an aluminum matrix. We examine the impact on electronic conduction caused by the presence of nitrogen impurities within the interfacial amorphous graphene layer. We elucidate the conduction mechanisms by using a projection of the electronic conductivity into space.

A Microchannel Heat Exchanger Produced From a Metal Matrix Composite by Hybrid Laser Powder Bed Fusion and Inkjet Printing

Abstract This paper explores the production of an oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) 304L stainless steel microchannel heat exchanger (HX) using a hybrid additive manufacturing process of laser powder bed fusion and inkjet printing. The study investigates the capabilities and economics of the hybrid inkjet-laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process and evaluates the dimensional accuracy, functionality, and mechanical properties of the resulting ODS alloy. The effectiveness and pressure drop of the ODS heat exchangers produced by the hybrid LPBF tool are also determined. Results show that the inkjet-doped samples have a lower mean channel height with higher standard deviation than samples produced by LPBF alone. This is attributed to greater absorption of laser energy for the powder coated with the oxide precursor. The economic analysis shows that the hybrid process has a potential for reducing the unit cost of the heat exchanger based on cost modeling assumptions.

Composite overwrapped metallic tanks

Work is reported for fabricating and testing the fiberglass overwrapped titanium pressure vessel for cryogenic service. Difficulties encountered in the tank liner fabrication phase involved explosive forming, vacuum annealing, chemical milling and electron beam welding. While each of these processes and the nondestructive test methods employed are normally considered to be individually reliable, the combination of poor material together with fabrication and development reversals prevented the full achievement of the desired end results. Eight tanks plus a prototype and tool proofing article were produced. Six of the vessels failed during the hydrostatic sizing operation. One of the remaining tanks was hydrostatically pressurized to burst and the other was pressurized repeatedly at 75 F from 100 psi to the operating pressure until failure occurred. As a result, it is not possible to draw firm conclusions as to the true value of the design concept due to the problems encountered in the program.

Development of a method for fabricating metallic matrix composite shapes by a continuous mechanical process

The continuing efforts in upscaling to produce larger diameter Al/B tubes are described. While the basic methodology remains unchanged, the larger volume of acrylic binder material and its removal by dissolution in toluene had to be performed by dynamic scrubbing. Similarly, the boron and MCF continuous length requirements increased when a 6 foot long by 7 inches wide mat was needed. These modifications and associated problems are described fully with schematics. Also included are seven experiments conducted to prepare larger tubes. The thermal profile, drawing speeds, and furnace positions in the draw bench bay are presented along with metallographic evidence of composite cross sections.

Metal-metal laminar composites for high-temperature applications.

The potentialities of composites consisting of multiple layers of tungsten alternated by layers of Nichrome V (a ductile, weaker than tungsten, but oxidation resistant alloy) at temperatures on the order of 2000 F are studied experimentally. The highest tensile strengths obtained for the composites were 600 MN/sq m (87,000 psi) at 1600 F and 448 MN/sq m (65,000 psi) at 2000 F. Highest 100-hr stress-rupture strengths at these temperatures were 387 MN/sq m (56,000 psi) and 121 MN/sq m (17,500 psi), respectively.
