Measuring Atmospheric Gas Using Small Satellites (Final Report)

The research focused on demonstrating that a small satellite (< 10 kg) is able to provide useable data in support of stratospheric circulation and broader atmospheric measurement generally thought to required large, lengthy and high cost space programs. The research goals targeting enabling CubeSats to serve as science platforms including low-cost communication infrastructure, science enabling solar panels and a ruggedized small form factor science instrument were highly successful with demonstrated on-orbit results. The collection of science data on-orbit was not successful due to a high tumbling rate impacted to the spacecraft at time of release on orbit, preventing reliable solar charging and leading to premature ending of the mission. The successes acquired on orbit will act as a springboard for further research and space projects at LLNL. Several research groups (both private and government) have expressed interest in the area of this research that proved successful such as the solar panels and iridium crosslink as well as the LLNL developed CubeSat standard.

Bridging Land-Surface Fluxes and Aerosol Concentrations to Triggering Convective Rainfall

During the period August 24-28, 2016, a delayed component the GO-Amazon Project, we launched nine altitude-controlled free balloons (CMET). Smaller than typical rawinsondes, CMET are equipped with altitude control, global communication via Iridium satellite, and aspirated sensors. The aims of our effort were to examine the interactions among convective boundary layer and dual river breeze circulations near the confluence of the Tapajos and Amazon Rivers in the eastern Basin. The week-long field campaign was timed to examine the reestablishment of the breeze circulations shortly after the passage of a strong instability line on August 22. Nine CMET were launched at the Curua-Una hydroelectric dam (2.8S; 54.3W), timed to encounter the Tapajos river breeze front by late afternoon. Soundings were made to establish the thickness of interface between the easterly trade and westerly Tapajos breeze circulation. Careful use of sounding strategies allowed these free balloons to track along the northerly channeled flow in the lowest 300 m above the River. Following the river encounter, balloons tracked to the west, sounding to describe the diurnal course of boundary layer in the forest west of the Tapajos River. The longest flight traveled more than 770 km over three days and twice rested overnight in the rain forest canopy. Ancillary data from surface climate and flux stations as well as the Santarem radiosonde, satellite images will be used to illustrate how the breeze circulations are seen near the surface and how they were disrupted by larger-scale events. Comparisons with HYSPLIT trajectories illustrate how sensitive real trajectories are to the refraction that the encounter with the breeze effects. A second effort was intensive analyses of data from the eddy flux tower at the Tapajós National Forest near Santarém Pará Brazil, with special emphasis on the role of clouds and canopy presence on light absorbance and photosynthetic activity.

Examination of Intergranular Crack on SC0234

The microstructure of the SC0234 weld was evaluated per DA-SPEC-01067, ''General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) Plutonium-238 Dioxide Fueled Clad Product Specification'' and it was determined that the weld microstructure conformed to the quality requirements. During the examination of weld cross section, the metallographic analysis revealed the presence of a surface crack. Prior visual examination per RPS-TA55-303 had not revealed the crack, nor did the surface photography performed per RPS-TA55-302. The presence of the crack does not violate any of the product specifications called out on DA-SPEC-01067. Although there is a well-documented history of weld hot crack susceptibility in the early development of the DOP-26 iridium alloy, a surface crack such as this had not been documented during welding at Los Alamos. In the interest of better understanding the cause; the product engineer/program recommended further examination of the crack. This report discusses the examination of the crack found in the weld cross section of simulant clad SC0234. Metallography, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy techniques (EDS) where used in the analysis of the crack and the surrounding weld microstructure.
