Integrated Waste Trade Study: Lunar Surface to Deep Space

The Logistics Reduction Project is one of NASA's technology development projects that is preparing humanity for deep space missions. Reducing the mass and volume of logistical supplies that must be carried from Earth to support the missions and their crews is the primary goal of the project. Effective ways to achieve this goal include reducing, reusing, or recycling wastes generated throughout the mission. Due to the goal of the project, waste processing technologies were analyzed for Lunar surface missions at various lengths and an 850-day Mars transit mission to evaluate the potential benefits of waste processing pertaining to each mission. The technologies assessed include trash compaction, trash-to-gas and human metabolic waste processing technologies, integrated with the baseline architectures of each mission’s habitat. The fully integrated systems were analyzed using an equivalent system mass, which is a metric that encompasses the mass, volume, power and cooling of a system, resulting in an estimate of launch mass and serving as a proxy for cost. Each system’s equivalent system mass was compared to that of the baseline waste processing system of the respective habitat, hand compaction with storage for Lunar surface missions and hand compaction with jettisoning for Mars transit, to evaluate whether the traded waste processing technology was beneficial. This analysis identifies a general trend that more sophisticated waste processing can be beneficial depending on the mission duration. For Lunar surface missions, the water recovery from waste processing can pay off over consecutive missions, due to offsetting the losses from the system via extravehicular activities. In contrast for Mars transit, the primary objective is mass removal from the spacecraft, so technologies like trash-to-gas are competitive with the baseline. Furthermore, the technologies which can recover resources from waste, such as water, may present additional advantages to an ever-changing Mars mission architecture.

Feasibility study of an Integrated Program for Aerospace vehicle Design (IPAD). Volume 4: IPAD system design

The computing system design of IPAD is described and the requirements which form the basis for the system design are discussed. The system is presented in terms of a functional design description and technical design specifications. The functional design specifications give the detailed description of the system design using top-down structured programming methodology. Human behavioral characteristics, which specify the system design at the user interface, security considerations, and standards for system design, implementation, and maintenance are also part of the technical design specifications. Detailed specifications of the two most common computing system types in use by the major aerospace companies which could support the IPAD system design are presented. The report of a study to investigate migration of IPAD software between the two candidate 3rd generation host computing systems and from these systems to a 4th generation system is included.

Human Systems Integration (HSI) Case Studies from the NASA Constellation Program

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Constellation Program is responsible for planning and implementing those programs necessary to send human explorers back to the moon, onward to Mars and other destinations in the solar system, and to support missions to the International Space Station. The Constellation Program has the technical management responsibility for all Constellation Projects, including both human rated and non-human rated vehicles such as the Crew Exploration Vehicle, EVA Systems, the Lunar Lander, Lunar Surface Systems, and the Ares I and Ares V rockets. With NASA s new Vision for Space Exploration to send humans beyond Earth orbit, it is critical to consider the human as a system that demands early and continuous user involvement, inclusion in trade offs and analyses, and an iterative "prototype/test/ redesign" process. Personnel at the NASA Johnson Space Center are involved in the Constellation Program at both the Program and Project levels as human system integrators. They ensure that the human is considered as a system, equal to hardware and software vehicle systems. Systems to deliver and support extended human habitation on the moon are extremely complex and unique, presenting new opportunities to employ Human Systems Integration, or HSI practices in the Constellation Program. The purpose of the paper is to show examples of where human systems integration work is successfully employed in the Constellation Program and related Projects, such as in the areas of habitation and early requirements and design concepts.

Cyber-Informed Engineering Case Study of an Integrated Hydrogen Generation Plant

Strategies for securing digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems within the nuclear industry are provided by multiple standards and guidance documents. However, since selection and use of security controls outlined in these documents are frequently only considered during or after installation, there are often limitations on their use, such as technological constraints related to design or operation. Furthermore, alternative controls intended to provide the same or similar security countermeasure as the primary control may also be infeasible at these stages, leaving the I&C system vulnerable to cyber-attacks. The limitations associated with ‘bolting on’ security controls late in the systems engineering lifecycle can be reduced by integrating Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) into the process. This paper evaluates the use of CIE during the high-level design stage of a hydrogen generation project where heat and electricity are provided by a nuclear power plant. Applying CIE to this project highlighted potential cyber vulnerabilities of the initial design, leading to recommendations for process flow and I&C system design modifications to reduce, and at times eliminate, the risk from both deliberate and unintentional cyber incidents.

Evaluation of smart charging for electric vehicle-to-building integration: A case study

Higher electric vehicle (EV) adoption will stress the importance of demand flexibility to achieve more economic, efficient, and reliable grid operation. Charging technologies will be paramount in shifting temporally to better fit the variable generation of wind and solar. As such, analysis is warranted on the benefits of EV charge scheduling with respect to installation cost, operation cost, difficulty of implementation, and grid flexibility. We tackle this by analyzing the cost savings of implementing an EV charge scheduling infrastructure to reduce demand charges and installation costs. In this paper, we analyze a case study for operation of 16 level 2 chargers and 1 fast charger for two different building types. We then evaluate various test phases for controlling building and charging loads using an adaptive charging network (ACN) algorithm to characterize the ACN’s potential to reduce overall project cost.

Operando study of mechanical integrity of high-volume expansion Li-ion battery anode materials coated by Al 2 O 3

Group IV elements and their oxides, such as Si, Ge, Sn and SiO have much higher theoretical capacity than commercial graphite anode. However, these materials undergo large volume change during cycling, resulting in severe structural degradation and capacity fading. Al 2 O 3 coating is considered an approach to improve the mechanical stability of high-capacity anode materials. To understand the effect of Al 2 O 3 coating directly, we monitored the morphology change of coated/uncoated Sn particles during cycling using operando focused ion beam–scanning electron microscopy. Here, the results indicate that the Al 2 O 3 coating provides local protection and reduces crack formation at the early stage of volume expansion. The 3 nm Al 2 O 3 coating layer provides better protection than the 10 and 30 nm coating layer. Nevertheless, the Al 2 O 3 coating is unable to prevent the pulverization at the later stage of cycling because of large volume expansion.

A Feasibility Study on the Integration of Human Performance Data From Diverse Sources Based on the Complexity of a Proceduralized Task

Securing the safety of socio-technical systems including nuclear facilities is the upmost goal to ensure their sustainability because historical records demonstrate that the performance degradation of human operators (e.g., human errors) is one of the crucial contributors to the occurrence of unexpected events resulting in extensive casualties and financial losses. This implies that the collection of human performance data in diverse conditions with which they could be faced during the operation of nuclear facilities. As this collection requires significant resources, it is necessary to resolve how to accomplish it with limited resources. To address this challenge, as suggested in the SHEEP framework, it is indispensable to extract valuable insights after integrating various kinds of human performance data obtained from different sources. However, a practical method to soundly integrate them seems to be still incomplete. Accordingly, the applicability of TACOM (Task Complexity) measure is investigated as a tool to identify useful information based on the integration of human performance data observed from different simulation conditions. As a result, it is expected that the TACOM measure would play an important role in addressing the technical challenge in securing human performance data.

Investigating the quaternary structure of a homomultimeric catechol 1,2-dioxygenase: An integrative structural biology study

The structural analysis of catechol 1,2 dioxygenase from Stutzerimonas frequens GOM2, SfC12DO, was conducted using various structural techniques. SEC-SAXS experiments revealed that SfC12DO, after lyophilization and reconstitution processes, can form multiple enzymatically active oligomers, including dimers, tetramers, and octamers. These findings differ from previous studies, which reported active dimers in homologous counterparts with available crystallographic structures, or trimers observed exclusively in solution for SfC12DO and its homologous isoA C12DO from Acinetobacter radioresistens under low ionic strength conditions. In some cases, tetramers were also reported, such as for the Rodococcus erythropolis C12DO. The combined results of Small-Angle X-ray Scattering, Dynamic Light Scattering, and Transmission Electron Microscopy experiments provided additional insights into these active oligomers’ shape and molecular organization in an aqueous solution. These results highlight the oligomeric structural plasticity of SfC12DO, proving that it can exist in different oligomeric forms depending on the physicochemical characteristics of the solutions in which the experiments were performed. Remarkably, regardless of its oligomeric state, SfC12DO maintains its enzymatic activity even after prior lyophilization. All these characteristics make SfC12DO a putative candidate for bioremediation applications in polluted soils or waters.

A Summary of Validation Studies for the Integrated TIGER Series Performed on ACORN Plus-up 218468/99

The Integrated TIGER Series (ITS) transport code is a valuable tool for photon-electron transport. A seven-problem validation suite exists to make sure that the ITS transport code works as intended. It is important to ensure that data from benchmark problems is correctly compared to simulated data. Additionally, the validation suite did not previously make use of a consistent quantitative metric for comparing experimental and simulated datasets. To this end, the goal of this long-term project was to expand the validation suite both in problem type and in the quality of the error assessment. To accomplish that, the seven validation problems in the suite were examined for potential drawbacks. When a drawback was identified, the problems were ranked based on severity of the drawback and approachability of a solution. We determined that meaningful improvements could be made to the validation suite by improving the analysis for the Lockwood Albedo problem and by introducing the Ross dataset as an eighth problem to the suite. The Lockwood error analysis has been completed and will be integrated in the future. The Ross data is unfinished, but significant progress has been made towards analysis.

Study of an Integration Platform Based on an Adiabatic Active-Layer Waveguide Connection for InP Photonic Device Integration Mirroring That of Heterogeneous Integration on Silicon

In this work, a photonic device integration platform capable of integration of active-passive InP-based photonic devices without the use of material regrowth is introduced. The platform makes use of an adiabatic active-layer waveguide connection (ALWC) to move an optical beam between active and passive devices. The performance of this platform is analyzed using an example made up of four main sections: (1) a fiber coupling section for enabling vertical beam coupling from optical fiber into the photonic chip using a mode-matched surface grating with apodized duty cycles; (2) a transparent waveguide section for realizing passive photonic devices; (3) an adiabatic mode connection structure for moving the optical beam between passive and active device sections; and (4) an active device section for realizing active photonic devices. It is shown that the coupled surface grating, when added with a bottom gold reflector, can achieve a high chip-to-fiber coupling efficiency (CE) of 88.3% at 1550 nm. The adiabatic active-layer mode connection structure has an optical loss of lower than 1% (CE > 99%). The active device section can achieve an optical gain of 20 dB/mm with the use of only 3 quantum wells. The optimized structural parameters of the entire waveguide module are analyzed and discussed.

Preliminary study of an integral fan lift/cruise engine for a 100 passenger VTOL transport

A simplified mission analysis was performed to determine an optimum engine cycle for a 100-passenger VTOL transport with a range of 500 statute miles. The aircraft had a total of eight integral fan lift engines, three of which serve as cruise engines. Fan pressure ratio was varied from 1.2 to 1.3, overall pressure ratio from 7 to 13, and turbine inlet temperature from 2460 to 2860 R. Bypass ratio was selected to meet a 500-foot altitude flyover noise goal of 95 PNdB. Airplane gross weight and direct operating cost (DOC) were calculated. The lowest DOC of 1.82 cents per seat-mile was achieved with a fan pressure ratio of 1.3, overall pressure ratio of 12, and turbine inlet temperature of 2860 R.
