Transverse momentum broadening of a jet in quark-gluon plasma: an open quantum system EFT

We utilize the technology of open quantum systems in conjunction with the recently developed effective field theory for forward scattering to address the question of massless jet propagation through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium. We discuss various possible hierarchies of scales that may appear in this problem, by comparing thermal scales of the plasma with relevant scales in the effective field theory. Starting from the Lindblad equation, we derive and solve a master equation for the trans- verse momentum distribution of a massless quark jet, at leading orders both in the strong coupling and in the power counting of the effective field theory. Markovian approximation is justified in the weak coupling limit. Using the solution to the master equation, we study the transverse momentum broadening of a jet as a function of the plasma temperature and the time of propagation. We discuss the physical origin of infrared sensitivity that arises in the solution and a way to handle it in the effective field theory formulation. We suspect that the final measurement constraint can only cut-off leading infrared singularities and the solution to the Markovian master equation resums a logarithmic series. This work is a stepping stone towards understanding jet quenching and jet substructure observables on both light and heavy quark jets as probes of the quark-gluon plasma.

Anisotropic flow of identified hadrons in $\mathrm{X}$e-$\mathrm{X}$e collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 $\mathrm{T}$e$\mathrm{V}$

Measurements of elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) flow coefficients of π ± , K ± , $p+\bar{p}$, $K$$^{0}_{S}$, and $Λ+\bar{Λ}$ obtained with the scalar product method in Xe-Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV are presented. The results are obtained in the rapidity range |y| < 0.5 and reported as a function of transverse momentum, p T , for several collision centrality classes. The flow coefficients exhibit a particle mass dependence for p T < 3 GeV/c, while a grouping according to particle type (i.e., meson and baryon) is found at intermediate transverse momenta (3 < p T < 8 GeV/c). The magnitude of the baryon v 2 is larger than that of mesons up to p T = 6 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of the shape evolution of the p T -differential v 2 is studied for the various hadron species. The v 2 coefficients of π ± , K ± , and $p+\bar{p}$ are reproduced by MUSIC hydrodynamic calculations coupled to a hadronic cascade model (UrQMD) for p T < 1 GeV/c. A comparison with v n measurements in the corresponding centrality intervals in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV yields an enhanced v 2 in central collisions and diminished value in semicentral collisions.

Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ baryons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section of the charm-strange baryon $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ is measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) via its semileptonic decay into e + Ξ - ν e in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ratio of the p T -differential $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon and D 0 -meson production cross sections is also reported. The measurements are compared with simulations with different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with predictions from a statistical hadronisation model (SHM) with a largely augmented set of charm-baryon states beyond the current lists of the Particle Data Group, and with models including hadronisation via quark coalescence. The p T -integrated cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon production at midrapidity is also reported, which is used to calculate the baryon-to-meson ratio $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $/D 0 = 0.20 ± 0.04 (stat.)$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ (syst.). These results provide an additional indication of a modification of the charm fragmentation from e + e - and e - p collisions to pp collisions.

Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt D 0 mesons in Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

The production of non-prompt D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Their nuclear modification factor (R AA ), measured for the first time down to p T = 1 GeV/c in the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes, indicates a significant suppression, up to a factor of about three, for p T > 5 GeV/c in the 0–10% central Pb-Pb collisions. The data are described by models that include both collisional and radiative processes in the calculation of beauty-quark energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma, and quark recombination in addition to fragmentation as a hadronisation mechanism. The ratio of the non-prompt to prompt D 0 -meson R AA is larger than unity for p T > 4 GeV/c in the 0–10% central Pb-Pb collisions, as predicted by models in which beauty quarks lose less energy than charm quarks in the quark-gluon plasma because of their larger mass.

Search for CME in U+U and Au+Au collisions in STAR with different approaches of handling backgrounds

We report the chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field between left- and right-handed quarks, caused by interactions with topological gluon fields from QCD vacuum fluctuations. We present two approaches to handle the dominant elliptic flow (v 2 ) background in the three-particle correlator (Δγ 112 ), sensitive to CME. In the first approach, we present the Δγ 112 and Δγ 123 measurements in U+U and Au+Au collisions. While hydrodynamic simulations including resonance decays and local charge conservation predict that Δγ 112 scaled by N part /ν 2 will be similar in U+U and Au+Au collisions, the projected B-field exhibits a distinct difference between the two systems and with varying N part . Therefore, U+U and Au+Au collisions provide configurations with different expectations for both CME signal and background. Moreover, the three-particle observable Δγ 123 scaled by N part /ν 3 provide baseline measurement for only the background. In the second approach, we handle the ν 2 background by measuring Δγ 112 with respect to the planes of spectators measured by Zero Degree Calorimeters and participants measured by Time Projection Chamber. These measurements contain different amounts of contributions from CME signal (along B-field, due to spectators) and ν 2 background (determined by the participant geometry). With the two Δγ 112 measurements, the possible CME signal and the background contribution can be determined. We report such a measurement in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 27GeV with the newly installed event plane detector, and report the new findings in U+U system where the spectator-participant plane correlations are expected to differ from those in Au+Au collisions.

Importance of non-flow background on the chiral magnetic wave search

We report an observable sensitive to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is the charge asymmetry dependence of the π - and π + anisotropic flow difference, Δv n (A ch ). We show that, due to non-flow correlations, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to Δv n (A ch ). The trivial slope contribution to the triangle flow difference Δv 3 (A ch ) can be negative if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. This can explain the observed negative Δv 3 (A ch ) slope in the preliminary STAR data. We further find that the non-flow correlations give rise to additional backgrounds to the slope of Δv 2 (A ch ) from the competition among different pion sources and from the larger multiplicity dilution to π + (π - ) at positive (negative) A ch .

Bound states and electromagnetic radiation of relativistically rotating cylindrical wells

Here, we compute the effect of rigid rotation on the non-relativistic bound states. The energy levels of the bound states increase with the angular velocity of rotation until at certain value of the angular velocity they are completely pushed out into the continuum which corresponds to dissociation of the bound states. When the angular velocity exceeds the critical value at which the ground state disappears into the continuum, no bound state is possible. This effect should have important consequences for the phenomenology of the quark-gluon plasma. One of the ways to study it experimentally is to observe the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a rotating bound state. We compute the corresponding intensity of electromagnetic radiation and show that it strongly depends on the angular velocity of rotation.

Exploring nuclear structure with multiparticle azimuthal correlations at the LHC

Details of the nuclear structure of Xe, such as the quadrupole deformation and the nuclear diffuseness, are studied by extensive measurements of anisotropic-flow-related observables in Xe–Xe collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are compared with those from Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV for a baseline, given that the 208 Pb nucleus exhibits a very weak deformation. Furthermore, comprehensive comparisons are performed with a state-of-the-art hybrid model using IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD. It is found that among various IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD calculations with different values of nuclear parameters, the one using a nuclear diffuseness parameter of α 0 = 0.492 and a nuclear quadrupole deformation parameter of β 2 = 0.207 provides a better description of the presented flow measurements. These studies represent the first systematic exploration of nuclear structure at TeV energies, utilizing a comprehensive set of anisotropic flow observables. The measurements serve as a critical experimental benchmark for rigorously testing the interplay between nuclear structure inputs and heavy-ion theoretical models.

Jet quenching and medium response in high-energy heavy-ion collisions: a review

Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at both the relativistic heavy-ion collider and the large hadron collider. Furthermore, we will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental observables and their implications on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.

Performance of the CMS Zero Degree Calorimeters in pPb collisions at the LHC

The two Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs) of the CMS experiment are located at ± 140 m from the collision point and detect neutral particles in the |η| > 8.3 pseudorapidity region. This paper presents a study on the performance of the ZDC in the 2016 pPb run. The response of the detectors to ultrarelativistic neutrons is studied using in-depth Monte Carlo simulations. A method of signal extraction based on template fits is presented, along with a dedicated calibration procedure. A deconvolution technique for the correction of overlapping collision events is discussed.

Isoscaling and nuclear reaction dynamics

Isoscaling parameters α and β have been explored as a function of breakup angle in binary excited projectile-like fragment decays produced in collisions of 70 Zn+ 70 Zn and 64 Zn+ 64 Zn at 35 MeV per nucleon. In this analysis, focus was placed on isoscaling the second heaviest fragment with 4 ≤ Z L ≤ 8 emitted from the excited projectile-like fragment in events that contained a heavy fragment with Z H ≥ 12. The breakup orientation θ prox was defined as the angle between the heavy and light fragments’ center-of-mass velocity and the fragment pairs’ relative velocity. Breakups between 0° < θ prox ≤ 80° have been shown to be dominated by dynamical contributions, while break-up angles of θ prox > 100° are predominantly statistical. Historically, isoscaling has often been understood and applied in a statistical context, assuming that the fragments are produced after statistical equilibrium is achieved. Finally, studying isoscaling parameters as a function of θ prox reveals the sensitivity of α and β to the mechanism of fragment production.

Enhanced dynamics in fusion of neutron-rich oxygen nuclei at above-barrier energies

Above-barrier fusion cross sections for an isotopic chain of oxygen isotopes with A = 16 –19 incident on a C 12 target are presented. Experimental data are compared with both static and dynamical microscopic calculations. Here, these calculations are unable to explain the ≈ 37 % increase in the average above-barrier fusion cross section observed for O 19 as compared to β -stable oxygen isotopes. This result suggests that for neutron-rich nuclei existing time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations underpredict the role of dynamics at near-barrier energies. High-quality measurement of above-barrier fusion for an isotopic chain of increasingly neutron-rich nuclei offers an effective means to probe this fusion dynamics.

Probing the neutron-proton asymmetry dependence of the nuclear source temperature with light charged particles

The dependence of the nuclear temperature on the source neutron-proton (N/Z) asymmetry was experimentally investigated with the light charged particles (LCPs) generated from thirteen reaction systems with different N/Z asymmetries, 64 Zn on 112 Sn and 70 Zn, 64 Ni on 112,124 Sn, 58,64 Ni, 197 Au, 232 Th at 40 MeV/u. A rather weak N/Z asymmetry dependence of the source temperature was qualitatively inferred from the extracted N/Z asymmetry dependence of the apparent temperature and that of the relative temperature change by the sequential decay effects with the help of the theoretical simulations. Comparing the present result with those from our previous work and other available experimental results, a weak N/Z asymmetry dependence of nuclear temperature is commonly observed in different independent experiments and with different thermometers, except for the result reported by McIntosh et al. [Phys. Lett. B 719, 337 (2013)]. Here, the origin of the difference between the conclusion of the former group and that of McIntosh et al. was addressed, using statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) simulations.

Many-body forces and nucleon clustering near the QCD critical point

It has been proposed that one can look for the QCD critical point (CP) by the Beam Energy Scan accurately monitoring event-by-event fluctuations. This experimental program is under way at the BNL RHIC collider. Separately, it has been studied how clustering of nucleons at freeze out affects proton multiplicity distribution and light nuclei production. It was found that even a minor increase of the range of nuclear forces dramatically increases clustering, while large correlation length ξ near CP makes attraction due to binary forces unrealistically large. Here, in this paper, we show that repulsive many-body forces near CP should overcome the binary ones and effectively suppress clustering. We also discuss current experimental data and point out locations at which a certain drop in clustering may already be observed.

Hadronic resonance production and interaction in p-Pb collisions at LHC energies in EPOS3

Using the EPOS3 model with the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model to describe the hadronic phase, we study the production of short-lived hadronic resonances and the modification of their yields and p T spectra in p-Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV. High-multiplicity p-Pb collisions exhibit similar behavior to midperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies, and we find indications of a short-lived hadronic phase in p-Pb collisions that can modify resonance yields and p T spectra through scattering processes. The evolution of resonance production is investigated as a function of the system size, which is related to the lifetime of the hadronic phase in order to study the onset and evolution of scattering effects in p-Pb collisions. We also study hadron production separately in the core and corona parts of these collisions and explore how this division affects the total particle yields as the system size increases.
