Role of communications satellites in the fiber era

Systenm descriptions of satellite and fiber optic networks are developed for the benchmark years 1983 and 1986, and forecasts are made for the years 1990 and 1995. Based on this information, the impact of fiber optics on satellite communications in the years 1995 and 2000 is assessed. Ten services are identified which are likely to be supplied at least in part by satellite in the 1995-2000 time frame. Estimates are made of the probability of existence and the number of transponders used by these future satellite services.

Telemetry data storage systems technology for the Space Station Freedom era

This paper examines the requirements and functions of the telemetry-data recording and storage systems, and the data-storage-system technology projected for the Space Station, with particular attention given to the Space Optical Disk Recorder, an on-board storage subsystem based on 160 gigabit erasable optical disk units each capable of operating at 300 M bits per second. Consideration is also given to storage systems for ground transport recording, which include systems for data capture, buffering, processing, and delivery on the ground. These can be categorized as the first in-first out storage, the fast random-access storage, and the slow access with staging. Based on projected mission manifests and data rates, the worst case requirements were developed for these three storage architecture functions. The results of the analysis are presented.

Imaging spectrometry in the post-EOS era

It is argued that the next generation of imaging spectrometers will need greater capabilities and more flexibility than the High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), which were designed for the first Earth Observation System platform. The emerging technology that represents a major advance in the scientific utility of imaging spectrometry is the acoustooptic tunable filters, (AOTFs). AOTFs are compact robust solid-state crystals which provide rapid (millisecond) electronically-controlled spectral tunability. This paper discusses the evolving requirements of imaging spectrometers and examines the basic system parameters of the HIRIS and the MODIS concepts involving the use of AOTFs, which will satisfy these requirements.

The 1983 tail-era data series. Volume 4: GOES 5 and GOES 6 geosynchronous magnetic field data

Twenty-four hour plots are presented of approximately 1-min average magnetic fields from the GOES 5 and GOES 6 spacecraft for the period January 1 to September 4, 1983, with the exception that GOES 6 was not available for the first five months of 1983. Data are displayed in a VDH coordinate system based on a centered dipole with Northern Hemisphere geographic coordinates of the pole at 78.80 deg latitude and 289.24 deg longitude. Magnetic local times are shown along the upper horizontal axis and universal time and dipole tilt angles along the bottom horizontal axis.

The 1983 tail-era data series. Volume 3: Geosynchronous particle measurements

Geosynchronous particle measurements are presented for comparison with same-scale plots of ISEE 3 plasma and field data. Shown for each day are electron and proton fluxes measured with the low-energy-range electron and the low-energy-range proton detectors of the Los Alamos Charged Particle Analyzer. This instrument has flown aboard several geosynchronous orbit satellites, including the three spacecraft from which the presented data were obtained. The presented data are 5-min averages of the integral flux in each of several energy channels.

The 1983 tail-era data series. Volume 2: ISEE 3 magnetic field

ISEE 3 spacecraft measurements within and near the Earth's magnetic tail is presented. Plots are shown of ISEE 3 magnetic field data. The plots in this volume showing observations from the ISEE 3 vector helium magnetometer experiment were produced from a tape of merged plasma/magnetic field data. The magnetometer produced six vector measurements/sec that were subsequently averaged over one minute intervals before merging with plasma data. Merging was accomplished by associating the nearest 1 minute field average with each plasma sample.

The 1983 tail-era series. Volume 1: ISEE 3 plasma

Observations from the ISEE 3 electron analyzer are presented in plots. Electrons were measured in 15 continuous energy levels between 8.5 and 1140 eV during individual 3-sec spacecraft spins. Times associated with each data point are the beginning time of the 3 sec data collection interval. Moments calculated from the measured distribution function are shown as density, temperature, velocity, and velocity azimuthal angle. Spacecraft ephemeris is shown at the bottom in GSE and GSM coordinates in units of Earth radii, with vertical ticks on the time axis corresponding to the printed positions.

Simple models for complex natural surfaces - A strategy for the hyperspectral era of remote sensing

A two-step strategy for analyzing multispectral images is described. In the first step, the analyst decomposes the signal from each pixel (as expressed by the radiance or reflectance values in each channel) into components that are contributed by spectrally distinct materials on the ground, and those that are due to atmospheric effects, instrumental effects, and other factors, such as illumination. In the second step, the isolated signals from the materials on the ground are selectively edited, and recombined to form various unit maps that are interpretable within the framework of field units. The approach has been tested on multispectral images of a variety of natural land surfaces ranging from hyperarid deserts to tropical rain forests. Data were analyzed from Landsat MSS (multispectral scanner) and TM (Thematic Mapper), the airborne NS001 TM simulator, Viking Lander and Orbiter, AIS, and AVRIS (Airborne Visible and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer).

Space information systems in the Space Station era; Proceedings of the AIAA/NASA International Symposium on Space Information Systems, Washington, DC and Greenbelt, MD, June 22, 23, 1987

Technological and planning issues for data management, processing, and communication on Space Station Freedom are discussed in reviews and reports by U.S., European, and Japanese experts. The space-information-system strategies of NASA, ESA, and NASDA are discussed; customer needs are analyzed; and particular attention is given to communication and data systems, standards and protocols, integrated system architectures, software and automation, and plans and approaches being developed on the basis of experience from past programs. Also included are the reports from workshop sessions on design to meet customer needs, the accommodation of growth and new technologies, and system interoperability.

Proposed planning and scheduling services for the SNC in the CDOS era

Studies indicate that the current NCC mode of operation needs to be enhanced to meet the needs of the mid to late 19990's. There is a need to simplify the request interface for Space Network services. This is because there are more complex missions, more flexible spacecraft operations, more scheduling data volume, and more events per spacecraft and scheduling period.

The post Challenger era Get Away Special program January 1992

The Get Away Special (GAS) program is described in terms of the changes that have taken place in both NASA and the GAS itself. Attention is given to the relationships developed between NASA and GAS customers in the context of programmatic and technical issues. The background of the GAS program is outlined with reference given to policy publications, the design of the Flight Verification Payload, and the first GAS payload launched. A review process is described that facilitates the management of the payloads through flight certification. The GAS Bridge was developed to carry up to 12 payloads simultaneously, and the recent period of GAS inactivity is explained. A price increase is introduced for future GAS payloads with negotiable access to optional services, and the ease and accessibility of the GAS programs for private experiments is emphasized.

User services in the TDRS II era

The next generation Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRS II) will provide a new level of telemetry, tracking and command services to user spacecraft. In addition to the S-band and Ku-band services, which have made the Space Network concept a reality, a new multifrequency dual-polarization high data rate Ka-band service will also be provided. The S-band multiple-access system will have a larger number of phased array elements, on-board beam forming, and a receive capability equivalent to a single-access antenna. A multifunctional intersatellite link, capable of relaying between TDRS IIs and providing an additional single-access service, is also planned. Enhancements, which include an improved location capability for both the TDRS II and user satellite, a navigation beacon, and a real-time emergency command capability will also be part of the TDRS II. The TDRS II will be three-axis stabilized sufficiently to provide these services to users either on the ground, in low earth orbit, or out to geosynchronous orbit.

Science data processing in the Mission to Planet Earth era

The data-processing systems developed to support NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MPE) are described in an overview of the system architectures. The MPE program is discussed in terms of flight segments and data types to examine the required elements of the information systems. The data-processing segments are described for the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science, the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, the Earth Observing System, and the Geostationary Earth Observatory. The data and information systems for the separate segments provide some redundant processing services. Distributed active archive centers are employed for each segment composed of three subelements: (1) a product-generation system, (2) a data archive and distribution system, and (3) an information management system. The data processing design for the MPE is expected to facilitate the understanding of the entire earth system on a global scale.

Payload training for the Space Station ERA

Training astronaut and ground controllers for payload operations onboard Space Station Freedom presents challenges not found in precursor programs such as Skylab and Spacelab. The evolution from current Spacelab payload training concepts is discussed, and the proposed SSF payload training approach is presented along with development strategies and recommendations.

Space Transportation System design for operations in the 2000+ era

Highlights of design studies for the Personnel Launch System (PLS) and the Advanced Manned Launch System (AMLS) are reviewed, and the benefits achieved by the involvement of product development teams (PDTs) in the advanced design environment are considered. The definition of system concept for the PLS and the AMLS and the development philosophy of the systems are addressed, including the adoption of major features of aircraft design, development, and operation, including performance trending, the use of certified airframe and powerplant personnel, lifetime certification, and the operational environment. Design features of the systems are examined.
