Historically, the teaching of quantum mechanics has been reserved for advanced undergraduate physics courses, mostly due to how far removed from classical intuition the subject is. Extensive mathematical background is usually a prerequisite for college-level introductory quantum mechanics courses. However, several ways to introduce quantum mechanics at the secondary school level have been suggested and developed. Unlike most other topics in physics, it is difficult to find intuitive examples of quantum phenomena outside of a specialized laboratory; additionally, straightforward hands-on demonstrations, activities, and experiments are somewhat limited.

Abstract Parallel operations are important for both near‐term quantum computers and larger‐scale fault‐tolerant machines because they reduce execution time and qubit idling. This study proposes and implements a pairwise‐parallel gate scheme on a trapped‐ion quantum computer. The gates are driven simultaneously on different sets of orthogonal motional modes of a trapped‐ion chain. This work demonstrates the utility of this scheme by creating a Greenberger‐Horne‐Zeilinger (GHZ) state in one step using parallel gates with one overlapping qubit. It also shows its advantage for circuits by implementing a digital quantum simulation of the dynamics of an interacting spin system, the transverse‐field Ising model. This method effectively extends the available gate depth by up to two times with no overhead when no overlapping qubit is involved, apart from additional initial cooling. This scheme can be easily applied to different trapped‐ion qubits and gate schemes, broadly enhancing the capabilities of trapped‐ion quantum computers.
We introduce and study generalized Rényi entropies defined through the traces of products of Tr B (| Ψ i $\rangle$$\langle$Ψ j | ) where |Ψ i $\rangle$ are eigenstates of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). When |Ψ i $\rangle$ = |Ψ j $\rangle$ these objects reduce to the standard Rényi entropies of the eigenstates of the CFT. Exploiting the path integral formalism, we show that the second generalized Rényi entropies are equivalent to four point correlators. We then focus on a free bosonic theory for which the mode expansion of the fields allows us to develop an efficient strategy to compute the second generalized Rényi entropy for all eigenstates. As a byproduct, our approach also leads to new results for the standard Rényi and relative entropies involving arbitrary descendent states of the bosonic CFT.
This paper expands on two recent proposals and, for generalizing the Ryu-Takayanagi and Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formulas to de Sitter space. The proposals (called the monolayer and bilayer proposals) are similar; both replace the boundary of AdS by the boundaries of static-patches — in other words event horizons. After stating the rules for each, we apply them to a number of cases and show that they yield results expected on other grounds. The monolayer and bilayer proposals often give the same results, but in one particular situation they disagree. To definitively decide between them we need to understand more about the nature of the thermodynamic limit of holographic systems.
Abstract We study holographic entropy inequalities and their structural properties by making use of a judicious grouping of terms into certain multipartite information quantities. This allows us to recast cumbersome entropic expressions into much simpler ones which share interestingly rigid structures. By performing a systematic search over some of these structures, we are able to discover more than 1800 novel entropy inequalities for six parties, thereby demonstrating that these recastings provide a fruitful generating technique for uncovering new holographic entropy inequalities. In attempting to interpret the corresponding sign-definite quantities as correlation measures, we also obtain a no-go result: the superbalance property of holographic entropy inequalities turns out to preclude them from being monotonic under partial tracing. In the process, we also comment on the geometrical significance of multipartite information quantities and present various structural relations amongst them.
