Cyber Physical Grid-Interactive Distributed Energy Resources Control for VPP Dispatch and Regulation: Preprint

This paper presents a cyber-physical algorithm for grid interactive DER control to enable two features of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) dispatch and grid voltage regulation, considering the communication and security impacts. We first formulate the DER dispatch problem as a real-time, iterative, and grid-interactive DER control problem. Thereafter, we consider a probabilistic traffic model to characterize packet delays and loss in a communication network, and study how the delays enter the process of information exchange among the grid measurement units, local DER controllers and the grid control center that coordinately execute this dispatch algorithm. Finally, we propose a cyber-physical grid-interactive DER control algorithm using the previous message strategy. The tracking and regulation capabilities of this proposed algorithm can be made immune to the asynchrony resulting from the communications network traffic. We carry out simulations to show possible numerical instabilities and sensitivities of the tracking and regulation capabilities on the proposed strategy. Our results exhibit that the uncertainties of the underlying communications infrastructure must be considered in the control algorithm for the VPP tracking and regulation capabilities of any DER in a generic Cyber-Physical System (CPS).

Gap Analysis of Supply Chain Cybersecurity for Distributed Energy Resources

A supply chain is the combination of the ecosystem of resources needed to design, manufacture, and distribute a product. In the context of supply chain cybersecurity, the resources that directly influence this ecosystem include software, data, and/or other digital components. Compromised equipment or software in the supply chain may lead to attacks such as financial loss; denial of service; a breach of confidential or proprietary information from a company, its customers, or its suppliers; ransomware that denies operation of automated equipment for payment; and malicious control actions that could damage equipment and endanger personnel. Currently 60.8% of US energy comes from fossil fuels, 18.9% comes from nuclear energy, and the last 20.1% comes from renewable sources. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission order FERC 2222 and Executive Order 14017 on America's Supply Chains are important milestones for safely expanding generation from renewable energy and achieving the goal of a decarbonized U.S. energy sector by 2035. This report analyzes gaps and opportunities in the supply chain currently available to the renewable energy sector, to help stakeholders formulate a coordinated response.

Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems: Preserving Customer Privacy through K-Anonymity

The smart grid represents the next generation of electricity distribution systems that utilizes recent technological innovations. It uses digital communication between its components and entities to attain more automation, self-sufficiency, and reliability. One of the many concerns in smart grid digital communication discussions is the possibility of violating customers’ privacy. Violating customers’ privacy imposes a significant barrier as smart grid desirable attributes are tightly tied to customers’ participation. Employing privacy models can address concerns regarding information privacy in smart grid digital communication. In this work, we provide an approach to utilizing K-anonymity to ensure data within the system excludes Personally Identifiable Information. Results suggest that a dynamically generated generalization hierarchy minimizes information loss incurred by the anonymization process.

High Resolution Ion Energy Distribution Measurements for Energization Studies on Madison Symmetric Torus RFP Plasmas

We propose to continue a comprehensive and aggressive collaborative study of the critical issues of RFP and fusion physics at MST by enhancing the inferred ion distribution function and the high (spatial and temporal) resolution of magnetic fluctuation measurements. For this, we propose to make novel use of a retarding potential before a neutral particle analyzer as well as a novel millimeter magnetic probe. The measurement of relationships between ion and electron temperatures and magnetic field fluctuations can provide otherwise unobtainable insights on the role of turbulence in fusion plasmas with special focus on the impact of magnetic field turbulence on plasma confinement and scaling. These insights can be particularly valuable when they are coupled with an increased understanding of the issues which drive the turbulence onset, enhance steady-state sustainment, and enable turbulent dissipation. With these new insights, MST will be particularly well positioned to provide important insights in a manner portable to a broad class of fusion devices. We propose to exploit this opportunity and, at the same time, take full advantage of the associated educational enhancements for plasma physics students as FAMU continues to expand the diversity of the fusion scientific workforce.

Techno-economic analysis of the impact of dynamic electricity prices on solar penetration in a smart grid environment with distributed energy storage

This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of using high levels of solar energy penetration up to 400 MW into a smart grid system of 60,000 smart houses. A novel non-cooperative Stackelberg game is introduced that incorporates the profitability of the supply-side and helps in solving problems related to overgeneration and photovoltaic curtailment. The non-cooperative game is intended to find the optimal dynamic prices that would leverage distributed storage through the demand-side to stabilize the power grid operation. Ten cases are studied with five photovoltaic plant sizes and two battery designs. Here, a novel quantitative analysis of high levels of solar penetration as a percentage of the total electricity demand is introduced to evaluate the technical feasibility of the studied cases. To evaluate the economic viability of the proposed smart grid system, four metrics were used: the levelized cost of energy, the levelized cost of storage, the payback period, and the net present value. Two out of ten studied cases were concluded to be the most promising cases, one with a solar photovoltaic plant size of 200 MW and the other with 300 MW. The case with 300 MW solar plant is preferred as it paves the way for more solar energy deployment with a solar penetration percentage up to 67.78%. This case had a payback period of 10.72 years and a net present value of $\$51.44$ M for the solar plant and a payback period of 12.06 years and a net present value of $\$40.75$ M for the demand-side.

Terminal energy distribution of blast waves from bursting spheres

The calculation results for the total energy delivered to the surroundings by the burst of an idealized massless sphere containing an ideal gas are presented. The logic development of various formulas for sphere energy is also presented. For all types of sphere bursts the fraction of the total initial energy available in the sphere that is delivered to the surroundings is shown to lie between that delivered for the constant pressure addition of energy to a source region and that delivered by isentropic expansion of the sphere. The relative value of E sub/Q increases at fixed sphere pressure/surrounding pressure as sphere temperature increases because the velocity of sound increases.
