Gold-Standard Chemical Database 137 (GSCDB137): A Diverse Set of Accurate Energy Differences for Assessing and Developing Density Functionals

We present GSCDB137, a rigorously curated benchmark library of 137 data sets (8377 entries) covering main-group and transition-metal reaction energies and barrier heights, (intra- and intermolecular) noncovalent interactions, dipole moments, polarizabilities, electric-field response energies, and vibrational frequencies. Legacy data from GMTKN55 and MGCDB84 have been updated to today's best reference values; redundant or low-quality points were removed, and many new, property-focused sets were added. Testing 29 popular density functional approximations (DFAs) confirms the expected Jacob's-ladder hierarchy overall but also reveals notable exceptions: functional performance for frequencies and electric-field properties correlates poorly with that for other ground-state energetics. ωB97M-V and ωB97X-V are the most balanced hybrid meta-GGA and hybrid GGA, respectively; B97M-V and revPBE-D4 lead the meta-GGA and GGA classes. Double hybrids lower mean errors by about 30% versus their hybrid analogues but demand careful frozen-core, basis set, and spin contamination treatment. GSCDB137 offers a comprehensive, openly documented platform for rigorous validation of DFA and universal machine learning potentials, and training of the next generation of exchange-correlation functionals.

Construction of an Anion-Pillared MOF Database and the Screening of MOFs Suitable for Xe/Kr Separation

The separation of xenon/krypton (Xe/Kr) mixtures is a challenging process. Many porous materials allow the adsorption of both Xe and Kr but only with low selectivity. Anion-pillared metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring the anion groups as structural pillars, show potential in gas separations, but only a limited number of them have been synthesized. Here, we describe a collection of 936 anion-pillared MOFs based on 22 experimentally available structures. We performed density functional theory (DFT) optimization and then assigned density-derived electrostatic and chemical (DDEC) charges for each MOF to make them well suited to molecular simulations. The structural properties of the MOFs vary more strongly with the choice of the organic ligand than with other aspects like fluorine groups and metal centers. We then screened the entire collection of MOFs in the context of Xe/Kr separation at room temperature. Compared with previously reported MOFs, the interpenetrated MOF SIFSIX-6-Cd-i is predicted to perform better for Xe/Kr separations, with a good balance between working capacity (1.62 mmol/g) and separation selectivity (16.4) at 298 K and 100 kPa. Here, we also found that the heterogeneity of fluorine groups within a MOF can help to enhance Xe working capacity without reducing the Xe/Kr selectivity, suggesting that synthesis of anion-pillared MOFs with mixed fluorine groups may lead to improved Xe/Kr separation performance.

A database of global storm surge reconstructions

Storm surges are among the deadliest coastal hazards and understanding how they have been affected by climate change and variability in the past is crucial to prepare for the future. However, tide gauge records are often too short to assess trends and perform robust statistical analyses. Here we use a data-driven modeling framework to simulate daily maximum surge values at 882 tide gauge locations across the globe. We use five different atmospheric reanalysis products for the storm surge reconstruction, the longest one going as far back as 1836. The data that we generate can be used, for example, for long-term trend analyses of the storm surge climate and identification of regions where changes in the intensity and/or frequency of storms surges have occurred in the past. It also provides a better basis for robust extreme value analysis, especially for tide gauges where observational records are short. The data are made available for public use through an interactive web-map as well as a public data repository.

A database of hourly wind speed and modeled generation for US wind plants based on three meteorological models

Abstract In 2022, wind generation accounted for ~10% of total electricity generation in the United States. As wind energy accounts for a greater portion of total energy, understanding geographic and temporal variation in wind generation is key to many planning, operational, and research questions. However, in-situ observations of wind speed are expensive to make and rarely shared publicly. Meteorological models are commonly used to estimate wind speeds, but vary in quality and are often challenging to access and interpret. The Plant-Level US multi-model WIND and generation (PLUSWIND) data repository helps to address these challenges. PLUSWIND provides wind speeds and estimated generation on an hourly basis at almost all wind plants across the contiguous United States from 2018–2021. The repository contains wind speeds and generation based on three different meteorological models: ERA5, MERRA2, and HRRR. Data are publicly accessible in simple csv files. Modeled generation is compared to regional and plant records, which highlights model biases and errors and how they differ by model, across regions, and across time frames.

Harmonized Database of Western U.S. Water Rights (HarDWR) v.1

Abstract In the arid and semi-arid Western U.S., access to water is regulated through a legal system of water rights. Individuals, companies, organizations, municipalities, and tribal entities have documents that declare their water rights. State water regulatory agencies collate and maintain these records, which can be used in legal disputes over access to water. While these records are publicly available data in all Western U.S. states, the data have not yet been readily available in digital form from all states. Furthermore, there are many differences in data format, terminology, and definitions between state water regulatory agencies. Here, we have collected water rights data from 11 Western U.S. state agencies, harmonized terminology and use definitions, formatted them for consistency, and tied them to a Western U.S.-wide shapefile of water administrative boundaries.

An infrared, Raman, and X-ray database of battery interphase components

Further improvements to lithium-ion and emerging battery technologies can be enabled by an improved understanding of the chemistry and working mechanisms of interphases that form at electrochemically active battery interfaces. However, it is difficult to collect and interpret spectra of interphases for several reasons, including the presence of a variety of compounds. To address this challenge, we herein present a vibrational spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction data library of ten compounds that have been identified as interphase constituents in lithium-ion or emerging battery chemistries. The data library includes attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction data, collected in inert atmospheres provided by custom sample chambers. The data library presented in this work (and online repository) simplifies access to reference data that is otherwise either diffusely spread throughout the literature or non-existent, and provides energy storage researchers streamlined access to vital interphase-relevant data that can accelerate battery research efforts.

Building morphologies of the USA structures database; a gauntlet feature set

In recent years there has been a proliferation of methods and data to extract building footprints from satellite imagery. However there has been very little effort to provide additional insight about these buildings beyond their spatial location and shape. Features derived from their geometries can be used to better characterize these buildings which are critical for further research and development. In this work a set of 65 unique features for every building for more than 131 million buildings covering the US has been developed. This rich feature dataset will enable researchers, policymakers and various agencies to derive additional building characteristics like height, occupancy type, and help to gain valuable and new insights of the built environment.

Nuclear Isomer Discovery Database Released

Nuclear isomers correspond to excited states in nuclides with finite lifetimes. Here, after the discovery of isotopes–different nuclides of the same element–in 1913 by Frederick Soddy [Citation1], Otto Hahn postulated in 1921 [Citation2] that there are even different metastable states within one isotope. In analogy to chemical isomers, which are the same compounds with distinct structures, nuclear isomers have the same number of protons and neutrons but in different configurations.
