Cross-modal interference and task integration - Resources or preemption switching?

Data are reviewed from experiments that have contrasted intra-modal (visual-visual) information presentation with cross-modal (visual-auditory) presentation. Five different processing mechanisms that are operating in dual stimulus tasks are described, and it is concluded that in studies where visual scanning is not required, cross-modal effects are of two classes. When the visual task is continuous (tracking), a discrete auditory stimulus will preempt tracking performance relative to a discrete visual stimulus, leading to an effective shift in allocation bias. When both tasks are discrete, the data regarding the relative advantages of cross- vs. intra-modal interference are ambivalent.

Average high latitude magnetic field: Variations with interplanetary sector and with season. 2: Comparison of disturbance levels and discussion of ionospheric currents

Average high latitude magnetic field data from northern observatories are examined for three ranges of magnetic disturbance level, Kp = 1 minus to 1+,2 minus to 3+, and or = 4 minus. Except for 0-8h MLT, 55-78 deg invariant latitude, during away interplanetary magnetic field sectors, the variations between season and sector have the the same characteristics at all Kp ranges. Because the amplitude of sector differences is much larger at sunlit local times than in the midnight sector, it is concluded that the current system of Svalgaard (1973) is not adequate to describe the sector variations in magnetic disturbance, other current systems are discussed briefly. The disturbance morphology and seasonal variation at all Kp levels confirms the results of previous studies which indicate that latitudinally broad current systems and non-ionospheric sources are present in addition to latitudinally narrow electrojet currents. Comparison of data between Kp levels indicates that the Harang discontinuity shifts toward earlier MLT with increasing Kp level.

A bandwidth-compressive modulation system

The phrase 'bandwidth-compressive modulation' means that the compression is achieved not by removing redundancy from the data (data compression), but rather by modulating the carrier phase and amplitude with blocks of data bits. The modulation described here is quadrature amplitude shift keying (QASK), a logical extension of quadrature phase shift keying, (QPSK, or quadriphase). QASK is a cost-effective form of combined phase-and-amplitude modulation. That is, n-bit QASK, like most phase-amplitude forms of modulation, requires considerably less transmitter power than comparably performing n-PSK, while among the class of all n-bit phase-modulation types, n-bit QASK performs nearly optimally but requires the least circuit complexity. A simple, unique microwave transmitter is described which provides high-rate QASK modulation with 4:1 bandwidth compression. A suppressed carrier multiple-loop QASK receiver provides the necessary phase tracking, automatic gain control (AGC), and symbol timing.

Copernicus ultraviolet observations of mass-loss effects in O and B stars

Far-UV spectra of 47 O, B, and A stars obtained with the Copernicus satellite are examined for P Cygni profiles. For all 40 stars with displaced absorption lines, values are given for the velocities of the short-wavelength edge, the line center, and the emission peak (if present). Parts of the spectra of 42 stars are reproduced, evidence for mass motions in ground-based spectra is discussed, and the best available data are summarized on the wavelengths and oscillator strengths of most lines likely to show mass-loss effects in either visual or UV spectra. The main conclusions are that: (1) the far-UV transitions, especially resonance lines, show that mass flow is present over a much wider group of stars than revealed by visible data on subordinate lines; (2) most of the line shifts imply mass motion away from the stars; (3) mass flow occurs in all but one star brighter than a bolometric magnitude of -6.0; and (4) the observed terminal velocities generally exhibit no significant correlation with temperature, luminosity, gravity, rotational velocity, or line strength.

Confidence about line features in Her X-1 spectrum

A balloon borne X-ray telescope was flown Aire-surl'Adour, France to search for pulsation of the X-ray source HER X1. The source was measured for about 3500 s relative exposure larger than 0.75 and features were detected at 57.5 plus or minus 7.5 keV and 135 plus or minus 10 keV in the spectrum. Data were reanalyzed in terms of possibility of gain shift encoder. The very strong dependence of the line features on such a shift is discussed.

A temperature dependent fatigue failure criterion for graphite/epoxy laminates

A fatigue failure criterion applicable to composite materials is developed and applied to predict the fatigue behavior of graphite/epoxy laminates with particular emphasis on the influence of temperature. Tensile stress-strain curves and tension-tension fatigue curves for various unidirectional, angle-ply and symmetrically balanced laminates were developed at test temperatures of 25 C, 74 C, and 114 C. For most laminates a reduction in both static strength and fatigue strength is observed with increasing temperature. This reduction appeared more severe in fatigue loading than in static tensile loading and most severe where the shear stress in the lamina is the dominate failure mode. Through an analytical formulation of shifting functions for the influences of temperature, all fatigue data are shown to be capable of being reduced to a single reference curve at some temperature. Examples are given which demonstrate the capability of the fatigue failure criterion to predict failure of complex symmetrically balanced laminates from relevant parameters obtained from the observed behavior of unidirectional and angle-ply laminates.

Improvements and validation of the erythropoiesis control model for bed rest simulation

The most significant improvement in the model is the explicit formulation of separate elements representing erythropoietin production and red cell production. Other modifications include bone marrow time-delays, capability to shift oxyhemoglobin affinity and an algorithm for entering experimental data as time-varying driving functions. An area of model development is suggested by applying the model to simulating onset, diagnosis and treatment of a hematologic disorder. Recommendations for further improvements in the model and suggestions for experimental application are also discussed. A detailed analysis of the hematologic response to bed rest including simulation of the recent Baylor Medical College bed rest studies is also presented.

Interferometric surface-wave acousto-optic time-integrating correlators

A structure for a coherent-interferometric acousto-optic (AO) time-integrating correlator was implemented by using a single surface acoustic wave (SAW) device with tilted transducers to reduce intermodulation terms. The SAW device was fabricated on Y-Z LiNbO3 with a center frequency of 175 MHz, a bandwidth of 60 MHz, and a time aperture of about 10 micros. The density of the photodetector array, with a potential of 120 MHz. Typical integration times are 30 to 40 ms, providing processing gains in excess of 10 to the 6th power. Such a device is useful in providing fast synchronization of communication links and in demodulating to base band and simultaneously acting as a synchronization lock monitor for moderate data rates. Where processing may be limited by Doppler shifts, a two dimensional architecture was implemented to allow full processing gain. Two one-dimensional, SAW AO time-integrating correlators and a two dimensional correlator are evaluated.

The sunspot chromosphere-corona transition region

Data from simultaneous readings of the line intensities, Doppler shifts, and line widths of a sunspot ion emission lines between 1170-1700 A are reported. Subsonic and supersonic flows were observed in the same line of sight above the umbra. A reduction of coronal plasma over sunspots with an electron temperature exceeding 1,000,000 K was confirmed, concurrent with enhanced emission from the transition region plasma in the temperature range 200,000-1,000,000 K. The differential emission measure is noted to have been caused to shift because of the enhancement of the transition region plasma emission, where radiative losses dominated the energy balance. Calculations of the energy balance also indicated that a detected divergence in the enthalpy flux for the umbral downflows could balance the radiative losses in the electron temperature range 30,000-200,000 K.

Sensitivity of depth of maximum and absorption depth of EAS to hadron production mechanism

Comparison of experimental data on depth of extensive air showers (EAS) development maximum in the atmosphere, T sub M and path of absorption, lambda, in the lower atmosphere of EAS with fixed particle number in the energy region eV with the results of calculation show that these parameters are sensitive mainly to the inelastic interaction cross section and scaling violation in the fragmentation and pionization region. The data are explained in a unified manner within the framework of a model in which scaling is violated slightly in the fragmentation region and strongly in the pionization region at primary cosmic rays composition close to the normal one and a permanent increase of inelastic interaction cross section. It is shown that, while interpreting the experimental data, disregard of two methodical points causes a systematic shift in T sub M: (1) shower selection system; and (2) EAS electron lateral distribution when performing the calculations on basis of which the transfer is made from the Cerenkov pulse FWHM to the depth of shower maximum, T sub M.

Fluid and protein shifts after postural changes in humans

The effects of head-up, one-step, slow-graded, and rapid-graded tilt positions on blood density (BD), plasma density (PD), and erythrocyte density (ED) in male and female subjects are evaluated using a mass density detection method. The preparation of the samples and procedures for density and hematocrit measurements are described. The formula for calculating the density and volume of fluid shifted between intravascular and extravascular compartments is derived. The data reveal that ED does not change with varying tilt positions; however, PD and BD increase linearly with increasing angles of tilt, thereby resembling the time course of hemodilution and hemoconcentration.

Image-Enhancement Aid For The Partially Sighted

Digital filtering enhances ability to read and to recognize objects. Possible to construct portable vision aid by combining miniature video equipment to observe scene and display images with very-large-scale integrated circuits to implement real-time digital image-data processing. Afflicted observer views scene through magnifier to shift spatial frequencies downward and thereby improves perceived image. However, less magnification needed, larger the scene observed. Thus, one measure of effectiveness of new system is amount of magnification required with and without it. In series of tests, found 27 to 70 percent more magnification needed for afflicted observers to recognize unfiltered words than to recognize filtered words.

Aeronautical mobile TDMA/MCTDMA system

A multiple carrier Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) system capable of supporting voice, stream data, and packet data traffic between aircraft and ground terminals is presented. Demand assignment permits efficient resource sharing for voice and stream data. The bandwidth efficiency of uncoded A Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (AQPSK) is 1 bps/Hz. High time efficiency (approximately equals 83 percent) is achieved through the use of symbol synchronous TDMA. Demodulation is achieved without loop hang-up while requiring only a 16 symbol preamble each burst. A concatenated coding system provides reliable transmission under multipath conditions.

Ka-band MMIC beam steered transmitter array

A 32 GHz six element linear transmitter array which employs MMIC phase shifters and power amplifiers is developed and its performance is evaluated. The MMIC phase shifters contains 14 MESFETs in three digital switched line and one analog loaded line phase shifter, and the MMIC power amplifiers are two stage amplifiers using GaAs MESFETs with 0.25 micron gate lengths and gate widths of 0.1 mm and 0.3 mm. The design of the array is described. The phase shift measurements for the MMIC devices are analyzed. The data reveal that the switched line phase shifters are accurate to within 7 pct; the power amplifier 1 dB compressed output power varied over 0.3 dB; the beamwidth of the array is 7.5 deg; and beam steering is over + or - 8 deg.
