Validation of Actuator Line and Actuator Disk Models with Filtered Lifting Line Corrections Implemented in Nalu-Wind Large Eddy Simulations of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Turbine generator power from simulations using Actuator Line Models and Actuator Disk Models with a Filtered Lifting Line Correction are compared to field data of a V27 turbine. Preliminary results of the wake characteristics are also presented. Turbine quantities of interest from traditional ALM and ADM with the Gaussian kernel (..epsilon..) set at the optimum value for matching power production and that resolve the kernel at all mesh sizes are also presented. The atmospheric boundary layer is simulated using Nalu-Wind, a Large Eddy Simulation code which is part of the ExaWind code suite. The effect of mesh resolution on quantities of interest is also examined.

In Situ Study of the Impact of Aberration-Corrected Electron-Beam Lithography on the Electronic Transport of Suspended Graphene Devices

The implementation of aberration-corrected electron beam lithography (AC-EBL) in a 200 keV scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) is a novel technique that could be used for the fabrication of quantum devices based on 2D atomic crystals with single nanometer critical dimensions, allowing to observe more robust quantum effects. In this work we study electron beam sculpturing of nanostructures on suspended graphene field effect transistors using AC-EBL, focusing on the in situ characterization of the impact of electron beam exposure on device electronic transport quality. When AC-EBL is performed on a graphene channel (local exposure) or on the outside vicinity of a graphene channel (non-local exposure), the charge transport characteristics of graphene can be significantly affected due to charge doping and scattering. While the detrimental effect of non-local exposure can be largely removed by vigorous annealing, local-exposure induced damage is irreversible and cannot be fixed by annealing. We discuss the possible causes of the observed exposure effects. Our results provide guidance to the future development of high-energy electron beam lithography for nanomaterial device fabrication.

δ 2 H isotopic offsets in xylem water measurements under cryogenic vacuum distillation: Quantifying and correcting wood‐water hydrogen exchange influences

Stable isotopes δ 18 O and δ 2 H are used to infer vegetation water sources. In some studies, significant xylem water δ 2 H offsets from potential source waters have been observed. The offsets appear to be more prevalent with cryogenic vacuum distillation (CVD) of plant water. Hypothesized mechanisms for these offsets include changes during plant water uptake and transport, and methodological problems. We propose that a large portion of the offsets are due to hydrogen isotope exchange between xylem water and non-crystalline hydroxyl groups of wood cellulose and hemicellulose during CVD. We present a method for estimating the hypothesized isotopic exchange between wood tissues and water, which is the result of Rayleigh and equilibrium fractionation. To estimate the exchange, we use published wood properties for North American tree species and isotope chemical relationships as a function of moisture content, CVD temperature and water extraction efficiency. A simple model of exchange between xylem water and hydroxyl groups captures the range of observations in studies in which CVD and non-CVD methods were compared. To evaluate the model, we compared observed δ 2 H offsets (sw-excess) values from two field datasets (90°C, n = 364, and 170°C, n = 43) to δ 2 H offsets estimated with our chemical model. We found good agreement between observed and estimated δ 2 H offsets for samples extracted at 90°C (r 2 = 0.69) but not for samples extracted at 170°C (r 2 = 0.20). The offset may be eliminated by increasing the extraction temperature to 229°C or by adding a standard sufficient to raise the moisture content to >150%. A correction can also be approximated by applying a theoretical calculation based on the extraction temperature, moisture content and water extraction efficiency.

Real corrections to Higgs boson pair production at NNLO in the large top quark mass limit

In this paper we consider the next-to-next-to-leading order total cross section of Higgs boson pair production in the large top quark mass limit and compute four expansion terms in 1 $ {m}_t^2 $ . To this end, we analytically compute the real-virtual and double-real contributions to the total cross section and combine them with the existing virtual contribution. Good convergence is observed below the top quark threshold, which makes our results a valuable input for approximation methods which aim for next-to-next-to-leading order corrections over the whole kinematic range. We present details on various steps of our calculation; in particular, we provide results for three- and four-particle phase-space master integrals and describe in detail the evaluation of the collinear counterterms.

Quarkonium semiclassical transport in quark-gluon plasma: factorization and quantum correction

We study quarkonium transport in the quark-gluon plasma by using the potential nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD) effective field theory and the framework of open quantum systems. We argue that the coupling between quarkonium and the thermal bath is weak using separation of scales, so the initial density matrix of the total system factorizes and the time evolution of the subsystem is Markovian. We derive the semiclassical Boltzmann equation for quarkonium by applying a Wigner transform to the Lindblad equation and carrying out a semiclassical expansion. We resum relevant interactions to all orders in the coupling constant at leading power of the nonrelativistic and multipole expansions. The derivation is valid for both weakly coupled and strongly coupled quark-gluon plasmas. We find reaction rates in the transport equation factorize into a quarkonium dipole transition function and a chromoelectric gluon distribution function. For the differential reaction rate, the definition of the momentum dependent chromoelectric gluon distribution function involves staple-shaped Wilson lines. For the inclusive reaction rate, the Wilson lines collapse into a straight line along the real time axis and the distribution becomes momentum independent. The relation between the two Wilson lines is analogous to the relation between the Wilson lines appearing in the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) and the gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF). The centrality dependence of the quarkonium nuclear modification factor measured by experiments probes the momentum independent distribution while the transverse momentum dependence and measurements of the azimuthal angular anisotropy may be able to probe the momentum dependent one. We discuss one way to indirectly constrain the quarkonium in-medium real potential by using the factorization formula and lattice calculations. The leading quantum correction to the semiclassical transport equation of quarkonium is also worked out. The study can be easily generalized to quarkonium transport in cold nuclear matter, which is relevant for quarkonium production in eA collisions in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Loop corrections in Minkowski spacetime away from equilibrium. Part II. Finite-time results

Loop corrections to finite-time correlation functions in quantum field theories away from equilibrium can be calculated using the in-in path integral approach. In this paper, we calculate the unequal-time two-point correlator for different massless self-interacting scalar quantum field theories on a Minkowski background, starting the field evolution at an arbitrary initial time. We find the counterterms that need to be added to UV-renormalize the result, including usual in-out counterterms in the dynamics and additional initial state counterterms that are required to cancel all UV divergences. We find that the late-time limit of the renormalized correlation function exhibits a linear or logarithmic growth in time, depending on whether the interaction strength is dimension-one or dimensionless, respectively. The late-time correlations match those obtained in our companion paper and, as shown there, the divergences do not indicate a real IR issue, consistent with what one would expect in Minkowski.

Moonshine, superconformal symmetry, and quantum error correction

Special conformal field theories can have symmetry groups which are interesting sporadic finite simple groups. Famous examples include the Monster symmetry group of a c = 24 twodimensional conformal field theory (CFT) constructed by Frenkel, Lepowsky and Meurman, and the Conway symmetry group of a c = 12 CFT explored in detail by Duncan and Mack-Crane. The Mathieu moonshine connection between the K3 elliptic genus and the Mathieu group M24 has led to the study of K3 sigma models with large symmetry groups. A particular K3 CFT with a maximal symmetry group preserving (4, 4) superconformal symmetry was studied in beautiful work by Gaberdiel, Taormina, Volpato, and Wendland [41]. The present paper shows that in both the GTVW and c = 12 theories the construction of superconformal generators can be understood via the theory of quantum error correcting codes. The automorphism groups of these codes lift to symmetry groups in the CFT preserving the superconformal generators. In the case of the N = 1 supercurrent of the GTVW model our result, combined with a result of T. Johnson-Freyd implies the symmetry group is the maximal subgroup of M24 known as the sextet group. (The sextet group is also known as the holomorph of the hexacode.) Building on [41] the Ramond-Ramond sector of the GTVW model is related to the Miracle Octad Generator which in turn leads to a role for the Golay code as a group of symmetries of RR states. Moreover, (4, 1) superconformal symmetry suffices to define and decompose the elliptic genus of a K3 sigma model into characters of the N = 4 superconformal algebra. The symmetry group preserving (4, 1) is larger than that preserving (4, 4).

QED corrections to the thermal neutrino interaction rate

Abstract Motivated by precision computations of neutrino decoupling at MeV temperatures, we show how QED corrections to the thermal neutrino interaction rate can be related to the electron-positron spectral function as well as an effective$$\overline{\nu }\nu \gamma $$vertex. The spectral function is needed both in a timelike and in a spacelike domain, and for both of its physical polarization states (transverse and longitudinal with respect to spatial momentum). Incorporating an NLO evaluation of this spectral function, an estimate of the$$\overline{\nu }\nu \gamma $$vertex, and HTL resummation of scatterings mediated by soft Bose-enhancedt-channel photons, we compute the interaction rate as a function of the neutrino momentum and flavour. Effects on the – (0. . .2)% level are found, noticeably smaller than a previous estimate of a related quantity.

Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

Leading-color two-loop QCD corrections for three-jet production at hadron colliders

We present the complete set of leading-color two-loop contributions required to obtain next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) QCD corrections to three-jet production at hadron colliders. We obtain analytic expressions for a generating set of finite remainders, valid in the physical region for three-jet production. The analytic continuation of the known Euclidean-region results is determined from a small set of numerical evaluations of the amplitudes. We obtain analytic expressions that are suitable for phenomenological applications and we present a C++ library for their efficient and stable numerical evaluation.

Hybrid analysis of radiative corrections to neutron decay with current algebra and effective field theory

We introduce a useful framework for high-precision studies of the neutron beta decay by merging the current algebra description and the fixed-order effective field theory calculation of the electroweak radiative corrections to the neutron axial form factor. We discuss the advantages of this hybrid method and show that it only requires a minimal amount of lattice QCD inputs to achieve a 10 –4 theory accuracy for the Standard Model prediction of the neutron lifetime and the axial-to-vector coupling ratio λ, both important to the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ at the LHC: on the size of corrections and b -jet definitions

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a $t\bar t$ pair in association with two heavy-flavour jets. We concentrate on the di-lepton $t\bar t$ decay channel at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The computation is based on pp → $e^+ν_eμ^-\bar{ν}_μb\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ matrix elements and includes all resonant and non-resonant diagrams, interferences and off-shell effects of the top quark and the W gauge boson. As it is customary for such studies, results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections. We extensively investigate the dependence of our results upon variation of renormalisation and factorisation scales and parton distribution functions in the quest for an accurate estimate of the theoretical uncertainties. We additionally study the impact of the contributions induced by the bottom-quark parton density. Results presented here are particularly relevant for measurements of $t\bar{t}H(H → b\bar{b})$ and the determination of the Higgs coupling to the top quark. In addition, they might be used for precise measurements of the top-quark fiducial cross sections and to investigate top-quark decay modelling at the LHC.

The LPM effect in sequential bremsstrahlung: 1/$ {\mathrm{N}}_{\mathrm{c}}^2 $ corrections

An important question concerning in-medium high-energy parton showers in a quark-gluon plasma or other QCD medium is whether consecutive splittings of the partons in a given shower can be treated as quantum mechanically independent, or whether the formation times for two consecutive splittings instead have significant overlap. Various previous calculations of the effect of overlapping formation times have either (i) restricted attention to a soft bremsstrahlung limit, or else (ii) used the large-N c limit (where N c = 3 is the number of quark colors). In this paper, we make a first study of the accuracy of the large-N c limit used by those calculations of overlap effects that avoid a soft bremsstrahlung approximation. Specifically, we calculate the 1/$ {\mathrm{N}}_{\mathrm{c}}^2 $ correction to previous N c = ∞ results for overlap g → gg → ggg of two consecutive gluon splittings g → gg. At order 1/$ {\mathrm{N}}_{\mathrm{c}}^2 $ , there is interesting and non-trivial color dynamics that must be accounted for during the overlap of the formation times.

Master integrals for two-loop QCD corrections to quark quasi PDFs

We compute the master integrals for the two-loop QCD corrections to quark quasi parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the large momentum effective theory (LaMET). With a proper canonical basis, we derive the analytical results for the three families of master integrals using the method of differential equations. The final expressions for the master integrals are given in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. These results allow us to extract the two-loop short-distant matching coefficients between quark quasi and lightcone PDFs in LaMET, and are valuable to improve the determination of the nucleon PDFs from first principles in future.

Two-loop electroweak corrections to the Top-Quark Contribution to ϵ K

The parameter ϵ K measures CP violation in the neutral kaon system. It is a sensitive probe of new physics and plays a prominent role in the global fit of the Cabibbo-Kobabyashi-Maskawa matrix. The perturbative theory uncertainty is currently dominated by the top-quark contribution. Here, we present the calculation of the full two-loop electroweak corrections to the top-quark contribution to ϵ K , including the resummation of QED-QCD logarithms. We discuss different renormalization prescriptions for the electroweak input parameters. In the traditional normalization of the weak Hamiltonian with two powers of the Fermi constant G F , the top-quark contribution is shifted by –1%.

Uniform Subspace Correction Preconditioners for Discontinuous Galerkin Methods with hp-Refinement

In this paper, we develop subspace correction preconditioners for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations of elliptic problems with hp-refinement. These preconditioners are based on the decomposition of the DG finite element space into a conforming subspace, and a set of small nonconforming edge spaces. The conforming subspace is preconditioned using a matrix-free low-order refined technique, which in this work, we extend to the hp-refinement context using a variational restriction approach. The condition number of the resulting linear system is independent of the granularity of the mesh h, and the degree of the polynomial approximation p. The method is amenable to use with meshes of any degree of irregularity and arbitrary distribution of polynomial degrees. Furthermore, numerical examples are shown on several test cases involving adaptively and randomly refined meshes, using both the symmetric interior penalty method and the second method of Bassi and Rebay (BR2).
