Magnetic Tunability in RE-DOBDC MOFs via NO x Acid Gas Adsorption

The magnetic susceptibility of NO x -loaded RE-DOBDC (rare earth (RE): Y, Eu, Tb, Yb; DOBDC: 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is unique to the MOF metal center. RE-DOBDC samples were synthesized, activated, and subsequently exposed to humid NO x . Each NO x -loaded MOF was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, and the magnetic characteristics were probed by using a VersaLab vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Lanthanide-containing RE-DOBDC (Eu, Tb, Yb) are paramagnetic with a reduction in paramagnetism upon adsorption of NO x . Y-DOBDC has a diamagnetic moment with a slight reduction upon adsorption of NO x . The magnetic susceptibility of the MOF is determined by the magnetism imparted by the framework metal center. The electronic population of orbitals contributes to determining the extent of magnetism and change with NO x (electron acceptor) adsorption. Eu-DOBDC results in the largest mass magnetization change upon adsorption of NO x due to more available unpaired f electrons. Experimental changes in magnetic moment were supported by density functional theory (DFT) simulations of NO x adsorbed in lanthanide Eu-DOBDC and transition metal Y-DOBDC MOFs.

Operando X-ray Diffraction Studies of the Mg-Ion Migration Mechanisms in Spinel Cathodes for Rechargeable Mg-Ion Batteries

A promising high-voltage spinel oxide cathode material MgCrMnO 4 with 18% Mg/Mn inversion was synthesized successfully. A new custom operando battery device was designed to study the cation migration mechanisms of the MgCrMnO 4 cathode using 0.1 M Mg(TPFA) 2 electrolyte dissolved in triglyme and activated carbon as the anode. For the first time in multivalent batteries, high-quality operando diffraction data enabled the accurate quantification of cation contents in the host structure. Besides the exceptional reversibility of 12% Mg 2+ insertion in Mg 1- x CrMnO 4 ( x ≤ 1), a partially reversible insertion of excess Mg 2+ during overdischarging was also observed. Moreover, the insertion/extraction reaction was experimentally shown to be accompanied by a series of cation redistributions in the spinel framework, which were further supported by density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the inverted Mn is believed to be directly involved in the cation migrations, which would cause voltage hysteresis and irreversible structural evolution after overdischarging. Tuning the Mg/Mn inversion rate could provide a direct path to further optimize spinel oxide cathodes for Mg-ion batteries, and more generally, the operando techniques developed in this work should play a key role in understanding the complex mechanisms involved in multivalent ion insertion systems.

Suppression of antiferromagnetic order and strong ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in Ca(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2-y As 2 single crystals

CaCo 2–y As 2 is a unique itinerant system having strong magnetic frustration. Here, we report the effect of electron doping on the physical properties resulting from Ni substitutions for Co. The single crystals of Ca(Co 1–x Ni x ) 2–y As 2 were characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, magnetization M versus temperature T, magnetic field H, time t, and heat capacity C p (H, T) measurements. The A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature T N = 52 K for x = 0 decreases to 22 K with only 3% Ni substitution and is completely suppressed for x > 0.16. For 0.11 ≤ x ≤ 0.52 strong ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations develop as revealed by magnetic susceptibility χ(T) = M(T) / H measurements. For x = 0.11 and 0.16 competing AFM and FM interactions result in a reentrant spin-glass behavior below T N , as evidenced by the observations of thermomagnetic hysteresis and magnetic relaxation. Enhanced FM fluctuations are also found for the x = 0.21 and 0.31 crystals, where χ c increases significantly at low T. A large χ anisotropy in these compositions where χ c is up to a factor of two larger than χ ab suggests that the FM spin fluctuations are quasi-1D in nature. Weak ferromagnetic contributions to the magnetization are found at T = 2 K for x = 0.11 –0.31. Heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements reveal the presence of FM quantum spin fluctuations for 0.11 ≤ x ≤ 0.52, where a logarithmic T dependence of Cp(T) / T is observed at low T. Here, the suppression of AFM order by the development of strong FM fluctuations in Ca(Co 1–x Ni x ) 2–y As 2 crystals suggests the presence of a FM quantum-critical point at x ≈ 0.20. Our density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that FM fluctuations are enhanced by Ni substitutions for Co in CaCo 2–y As 2 . The Sommerfeld electronic heat-capacity coefficient is enhanced for x = 0, 0.21, and 0.42 by about a factor of two compared to DFT calculations of the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy, suggesting an enhancement of the DOS from electron-phonon and/or electron-electron interactions. The crystals with x > 0.52 do not exhibit FM spin fluctuations or magnetic order at T ≥ 1.8 K, which was found from the DFT calculations to arise from a Stoner transition. Superconductivity is not observed above 1.8 K for any of the compositions. Neutron-diffraction studies of crystals with x = 0.11 and 0.16 in the crossover regime (0.1 ≲ x ≲ 0.2) show no evidence of A-type ordering as observed in the parent compound with x = 0. Furthermore, no other common magnetic structures, such as ferromagnetic (FM), helical stacking of in-plane FM layers, or in-plane AFM structure, are found with an ordered moment greater than the uncertainty of 0.05 μ B per transition-metal atom.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB 2 stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB 2 exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature T c as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m structure to an MgB 2 -like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high T c values among diborides are not restricted to MgB 2 as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high T c values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB 2 structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the $\text{R}\bar{3}$⁢m at high temperatures across the Nb 1–x ⁢Mo x B 2 series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB 2 adopts the MgB 2 crystal structure. Finally, high magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb x ⁢Mo 1–x⁢ B 2 exhibits superconductivity with T c as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Spatially anisotropic 𝑆=1 square-lattice antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy realized in a Ni(II) pyrazine-𝑛,𝑛′-dioxide coordination polymer

The Ni(NCS) 2 (pyzdo) 2 coordination polymer is found to be an S = 1 spatially anisotropic square lattice with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. This conclusion is based upon considering in concert the experimental probes x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic-field-dependent heat capacity, muon-spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, neutron spectroscopy, and pulsed-field magnetization. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order develops at T N = 18.5 K. Although the samples are polycrystalline, there is an observable spin-flop transition and saturation of the magnetization at ≈80 T. Linear spin-wave theory yields spatially anisotropic exchanges within an AFM square lattice, J x =0.235 meV, J y =2.014 meV, and an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy D=−1.622 meV (after renormalization). The anisotropy of the exchanges is supported by density functional theory.

Ferroelectricity in boron-substituted aluminum nitride thin films

This manuscript demonstrates ferroelectricity in B-substituted AlN thin films and a complementary set of first-principles calculations to understand their structure-property relationships. Al 1–x B x N films are grown by dual-cathode reactive magnetron sputtering on (110)W/(001)Al 2 O 3 substrates at 300°C at compositions spanning x = 0 to x = 0.20. X-ray diffraction studies indicate a decrease in both the c and a lattice parameters with increasing B concentration, resulting in a decrease in unit cell volume and a constant c/a axial ratio of 1.60 over this composition range. Films with 0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.15 display ferroelectric switching with remanent polarizations exceeding 125 μCcm –2 while maintaining band gap energies of > 5.2eV. The large band gap allows low frequency hysteresis measurement (200 Hz) with modest leakage contributions. At B concentrations of x > 0.15, c-axis orientation deteriorates and ferroelectric behavior is degraded. Furthermore, density-functional theory calculations corroborate the structural observations and provide predictions for the wurtzite u parameter, polarization reversal magnitudes, and composition-dependent coercive fields.

Computationally Accelerated Discovery and Experimental Demonstration of Gd0.5La0.5Co0.5Fe0.5O3 for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

Solar thermochemical hydrogen (STCH) production is a promising method to generate carbon neutral fuels by splitting water utilizing metal oxide materials and concentrated solar energy. The discovery of materials with enhanced water-splitting performance is critical for STCH to play a major role in the emerging renewable energy portfolio. While perovskite materials have been the focus of many recent efforts, materials screening can be time consuming due to the myriad chemical compositions possible. This can be greatly accelerated through computationally screening materials parameters including oxygen vacancy formation energy, phase stability, and electron effective mass. In this work, the perovskite Gd 0.5 La 0.5 Co 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 (GLCF), was computationally determined to be a potential water splitter, and its activity was experimentally demonstrated. During water splitting tests with a thermal reduction temperature of 1,350°C, hydrogen yields of 101 μmol/g and 141 μmol/g were obtained at re-oxidation temperatures of 850 and 1,000°C, respectively, with increasing production observed during subsequent cycles. This is a significant improvement from similar compounds studied before (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3 and LaFe 0.75 Co 0.25 O 3 ) that suffer from performance degradation with subsequent cycles. Confirmed with high temperature x-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) patterns under inert and oxidizing atmosphere, the GLCF mainly maintained its phase while some decomposition to Gd 2-x La x O 3 was observed.
