Topological magnon bands in a room-temperature kagome magnet

Topological magnon is a vibrant research field gaining more and more attention in the past few years. Among many theoretical proposals and limited experimental studies, ferromagnetic kagome lattice emerges as one of the most elucidating systems. Here we report neutron scattering studies of YMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes. This system undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition upon cooling with the incommensurability along the out-of-plane direction. We observe magnon band gap opening at the symmetry-protected K points and ascribe this feature to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions. Our observation supports the existence of topological Dirac magnons in both the commensurate collinear and incommensurate coplanar magnetic orders, which is further corroborated by symmetry analysis. This finding places YMn 6 Sn 6 as a promising candidate for room-temperature magnon spintronics applications.

Exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect due to anticrossing of spin-split bands in the antiferromagnetic half-Heusler compound TbPtBi

We have investigated the magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle reaching ~0.68–0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the Weyl points but that it is driven by the large net Berry curvature produced by the anticrossing of spin-split bands near the Fermi level in TbPtBi.

Intrinsic axion insulating behavior in antiferromagnetic MnBi 6 Te 10

A striking feature of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) protected topological insulators (TIs) is that they are characterized by a half integer quantum Hall effect on the boundary when the surface states are gapped by time-reversal breaking perturbations. While TRS-protected TIs have become increasingly under control, magnetic analogs are still a largely unexplored territory with novel rich structures. In particular, magnetic topological insulators can also host a quantized axion term in the presence of lattice symmetries. Since these symmetries are naturally broken on the boundary, the surface states can develop a gap without external manipulation. In this work, we combine theoretical analysis, density-functional calculations and experimental evidence to reveal intrinsic axion insulating behavior in MnBi 6 Te 10 . Additionally, the quantized axion term arises from the simplest possible mechanism in the antiferromagnetic regime where it is protected by inversion symmetry and the product of a fractional translation and TRS. The anticipated gapping of the Dirac surface state at the edge is subsequently experimentally established using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). As a result, this system provides the magnetic analog of the simplest TRS-protected TI with a single, gapped Dirac cone at the surface.

Antichiral spin order, its soft modes, and their hybridization with phonons in the topological semimetal Mn 3 Ge

Here we report the magnetic structure and spin excitations of Mn 3 Ge , a breathing kagome antiferromagnet with transport anomalies attributed to Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the magnetic order is a k = 0 coplanar state belonging to a Γ 9 irreducible representation, which can be described as a perfect 120 ° antichiral structure with a moment of 2.2(1) μ B /Mn, superimposed with weak collinear ferromagnetism. Inelastic neutron scattering shows three collective Q = 0 excitations at Δ 1 = 2.9 ( 6 ) meV, Δ 2 = 14.6 ( 3 ) meV, and Δ 3 = 17.5 ( 3 ) meV. A field theory of Q ≈ 0 spin waves in triangular antiferromagnets with a 120 ° spin structure was used to classify these modes. The in-plane mode ( α ) is gapless, Δ 1 is the gap to a doublet of out-of-plane spin excitations ( β x , β y ), and Δ 2 , Δ 3 result from hybridization of optical phonons with magnetic excitations. While a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian including exchange interactions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and single-ion crystal field terms can describe aspects of the Mn-based magnetism, spin-wave damping [ Γ = 25 ( 8 ) meV] and the extended range of magnetic interactions indicate itinerant magnetism consistent with the transport anomalies.

Signatures of possible surface states in TaAs

In this work, we study Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in single crystals of TaAs and find a previously undetected two-dimensional quantum oscillation that does not belong to the bulk Fermi surface. We cannot find an impurity phase consistent with our observations, and extensive diffraction measurements have not shown the presence of known impurity phases. We conjecture that the frequency originates from surface states that are sensitive to surface disorder. One candidate is the interference of coherent quasiparticles traversing two distinct Fermi arcs on the [001] crystallographic surface. The frequency and effective mass quantitatively agree with predictions of density functional theory and previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of the Fermi arcs.

Bulk Fermi surfaces of the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidate NiTe 2

Here, we present a study on the Fermi surface of the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidate NiTe 2 via the temperature and angular dependence of the de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) effect measured in single crystals grown through Te flux. In contrast to its isostructural compounds like PtSe 2 , band-structure calculations predict NiTe 2 to display a tilted Dirac node very close to its Fermi level that is located along the Γ to A high-symmetry direction within its first Brillouin zone. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is found to be in agreement with the first-principles calculations when the electronic bands are slightly shifted with respect to the Fermi level (ε F ), and therefore provide support for the existence of a Dirac type-II node in NiTe 2 . Nevertheless, we observed mild disagreements between experimental observations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations as, for example, nearly isotropic and light experimental effective masses. This indicates that the dispersion of the bands is not well captured by DFT. Despite the coexistence of Dirac-like fermions with topologically trivial carriers, samples of the highest quality display an anomalous and large either linear or sublinear magnetoresistivity. Finally, this suggests that Lorentz invariance breaking Dirac-like quasiparticles dominate the carrier transport in this compound.

Distinguishing the gapped and Weyl semimetal scenario in ZrTe 5 : insights from an effective two-band model

In this work, we study the static and dynamic transport properties of a low-energy two-band model proposed previously in Martino et al. [PRL 122, 217402 (2019)], with an anisotropic in-plane linear momentum dependence and a parabolic out-of-plane dispersion. The model is extended to include a negative band gap, which leads to the emergence of a Weyl semimetal (WSM) state, as opposed to the gapped semimetal (GSM) state when the band gap is positive. Furthermore, we calculate and compare the zero- and finite-frequency transport properties of the GSM and WSM cases. The DC properties that are calculated for the GSM and WSM cases are Drude spectral weight, mobility, and resistivity. We determine their dependence on the Fermi energy and crystal direction. The in- and out-of-plane optical conductivities are calculated in the limit of the vanishing interband relaxation rate for both semimetals. The main common features are an ω 1/2 in-plane and ω 3/2 out-of-plane frequency dependence of the optical conductivity. We seek particular features related to the charge transport that could unambiguously point to one ground state over the other, based on the comparison with the experiment. Differences between the WSM and GSM are in principle possible only at extremely low carrier concentrations and at low temperatures.

Infrared fixed points of higher-spin fermions in topological semimetals

We determine the fate of interacting fermions described by the Hamiltonian H = p ∙ J in three-dimensional topological semimetals with linear band crossing, where p is momentum and J are the spin- j matrices for half-integer pseudospin j ≥ 3/2. While weak short-range interactions are irrelevant at the crossing point due to the vanishing density of states, weak long-range Coulomb interactions lead to a renormalization of the band structure. Using a self-consistent perturbative renormalization group approach, we show that band crossings of the type p ∙ J are unstable for j ≤ 7/2. Instead, through an intriguing interplay between cubic crystal symmetry, band topology, and interaction effects, the system is attracted to a variety of infrared fixed points. We also unravel several other properties of higher-spin fermions for general j , such as the relation between fermion self-energy and free energy, or the vanishing of the renormalized charge. An O(3) symmetric fixed point composed of equal chirality Weyl fermions is stable for j ≤ 7/2 and very likely so for all j. We then explore the rich fixed point structure for j = 5/2 in detail. We find additional attractive fixed points with enhanced O ( 3 ) symmetry that host both emergent Weyl or massless Dirac fermions, and identify a puzzling, infrared stable, anisotropic fixed point without enhanced symmetry in close analogy to the known case of j = 3/2.

Topological superconductivity induced by a triple- q magnetic structure

Here we demonstrate that the recently discovered triple- q (3 q ) magnetic structure, when embedded in a magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) system, gives rise to the emergence of topological superconductivity. We investigate the structure of chiral Majorana edge modes at domain walls, and show that they can be distinguished from trivial in-gap modes through the spatial distribution of the induced supercurrents. Finally, we show that topological superconductivity in 3 q MSH systems is a robust phenomenon that does not depend on the relative alignment of the magnetic and superconducting layers, or on the presence of electronic degrees of freedom in the magnetic layer.

Zero-field magnetic ground state of EuMg 2 Bi 2

Layered trigonal EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to be a topological semimetal that hosts multiple Dirac points that may be gapped or split by the onset of magnetic order. In this study, we report zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic susceptibility measurements versus temperature χ ( T ) of EuMg 2 Bi 2 that show the intraplane ordering is ferromagnetic ( Eu 2 + , S = 7 / 2 ) with the moments aligned in the a b plane while adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically (i.e., A-type antiferromagnetism) below the Néel temperature.

Topological surface states on the nonpolar (110) and (111) surfaces of SmB 6

In order to clarify the controversial issue of the topological nature in a mixed-valent Kondo system, SmB 6 , we have explored the surface states on the nonpolar (110) surface of SmB 6 , employing both angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiment and ab initio density-functional theory (DFT) band calculations. Based on ARPES spectroscopic fingerprints and the DFT surface band structures, we ascribe the observed spectral weights at $\bar{X}$ and $\bar{Y}$ on the (110) surface Brillouin zone to topological surface states (TSSs) of “topological insulator (TI)” nature and of “topological crystalline insulator (TCI)” nature, respectively. With varying the chemical potential, the double Dirac cones of the TCI nature exhibit a Lifshitz transition of Fermi surfaces with intriguing spin textures. Further, we have also examined the TSSs on the nearly nonpolar (111) surface of SmB 6 in connection with a recently reported ARPES result and proposed a way to probe the Dirac points that are buried in the bulk-projected bands.

Crystalline solutions of the Kohn-Sham equations in the fractional quantum Hall regime

A Kohn-Sham density functional approach has recently been developed for the fractional quantum Hall effect, which maps the strongly interacting electrons into a system of weakly interacting composite fermions subject to an exchange correlation potential as well as a density dependent gauge field that mimics the "flux quanta" bound to composite fermions. To get a feel for the role of various terms, we study the behavior of the self-consistent solution as a function of the strength of the exchange correlation potential, which is varied through an ad hoc multiplicative factor. Here, we find that a crystal phase is stabilized when the exchange correlation interaction is sufficiently strong relative to the composite-fermion cyclotron energy. Various properties of this crystal are examined.

Intrinsic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5

Superconductors with kagome lattices have been identified for over 40 years, with a superconducting transition temperature T c up to 7 K. Recently, certain kagome superconductors have been found to exhibit an exotic charge order, which intertwines with superconductivity and persists to a temperature being one order of magnitude higher than T c . Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the charge order in kagome superconductor Rb V 3 Sb 5 . We observe both a 2×2 chiral charge order and nematic surface superlattices (predominantly 1×4). We find that the 2×2 charge order exhibits intrinsic chirality with magnetic field tunability. Defects can scatter electrons to introduce standing waves, which couple with the charge order to cause extrinsic effects. While the chiral charge order resembles that discovered in KV 3 Sb 5 , it further interacts with the nematic surface superlattices that are absent in KV 3 Sb 5 but exist in CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Evolution of magnetic interactions in Sb-substituted MnBi 2 Te 4

The Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 series is purported to span from an antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator at x = 0 to a trivial AF insulator at x = 1. Here we report on neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions across this series. All compounds measured possess ferromagnetic (FM) triangular layers and we find a crossover from AF to FM interlayer coupling near x = 1 for our samples. The large spin gap at x = 0 closes rapidly and the average FM exchange interactions within the triangular layer increase with Sb substitution. Similar to a previous study of MnBi 2 Te 4 , we find severe spectral broadening which increases dramatically across the compositional series. In addition to broadening, we observe an additional sharp magnetic excitation in MnSb 2 Te 4 that may indicate the development of local magnetic modes originating from antisite disorder between Mn and Sb sublattices. Here, the results suggest that both substitutional and antisite disorder contribute substantially to the magnetism in Mn(Bi 1–x Sb x ) 2 Te 4 .

Prediction of double-Weyl points in the iron-based superconductor CaKFe 4 As 4

Employing a combination of symmetry analysis, low-energy modeling, and ab initio simulations, we predict the presence of magnetic-field-induced Weyl points close to the Fermi level in CaKFe 4 As 4 . Depending on the relative strengths of the magnetic field and of the spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl fermions can carry a topological charge of ±1 or ±2, making CaKFe 4 As 4 a rare realization of a double-Weyl semimetal. Here, we further predict experimental manifestations of these Weyl points, both in bulk properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect, and in surface properties, such as the emergence of prominent Fermi arcs. Because CaKFe 4 As 4 displays unconventional fully gapped superconductivity below 30 K, our findings open a route to investigate the interplay between superconductivity and Weyl fermions.

Robust topological state against magnetic impurities observed in the superconductor PbTaSe 2

Magnetic impurities deposited on topological superconductor candidate PbTaSe 2 can introduce a nonsplitting zero-energy state inside the superconducting gap, which has been proposed as a field-free platform for topological zero modes. However, it is still unclear how robust the topological state in PbTaSe 2 is against magnetic impurities, which is related to the topological nature of the zero-energy state as well as its potential for quantum computation. In this paper, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the topological surface state in the normal state of PbTaSe 2 under the perturbation of magnetic impurities. We visualize the quasiparticle interference (QPI) arising from the topological surface state. We then deposit Fe impurities on the surface to form atomic Fe adatoms. We find that each Fe adatom sits at a unique interstitial position on the surface and features a local state at high energies, both of which are consistent with our first-principles calculation that further reveals its large magnetic moment. Our systematic Fe deposition and subsequent measurements show that the arclike QPI pattern at the Fermi energy is robust with up to 3% Fe coverage where the atomic nature of Fe adatoms still holds. Our results provide evidence that the topological surface state at the Fermi energy in PbTaSe 2 is robust against dilute magnetic impurities.

Electronic nature of chiral charge order in the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5

Kagome superconductors with T C up to 7 K have been discovered for over 40 y. Recently, unconventional chiral charge order has been reported in kagome superconductor KV 3 Sb 5 , with an ordering temperature of one order of magnitude higher than the T C . However, the chirality of the charge order has not been reported in the cousin kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 , and the electronic nature of the chirality remains elusive. In this paper, we report the observation of electronic chiral charge order in CsV 3 Sb 5 via scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We observe a 2 × 2 charge modulation and a 1 × 4 superlattice in both topographic data and tunneling spectroscopy. 2 × 2 charge modulation is highly anticipated as a charge order by fundamental kagome lattice models at van Hove filling, and is shown to exhibit intrinsic chirality. We find that the 1 × 4 superlattices form various small domain walls, and can be a surface effect as supported by our first-principles calculations. Crucially, we find that the amplitude of the energy gap opened by the charge order exhibits real-space modulations, and features 2 × 2 wave vectors with chirality, highlighting the electronic nature of the chiral charge order. STM study at 0.4 K reveals a superconducting energy gap with a gap size 2Δ = 0.85 meV, which estimates a moderate superconductivity coupling strength with 2Δ/k B T C = 3.9. Furthermore, when further applying a c-axis magnetic field, vortex core bound states are observed within this gap, indicative of clean-limit superconductivity.
